Fascinating sites include statues of gods and goddesses,
temples, theatres, agoras, churches, mosques and pal-
aces. Roman temples, Seljuk Caravanserais, Ottoman
mosques and palaces, the famous Grand Bazaar in Is-
tanbul with its maze of over 4000 shops, ancient cities
like Ephesus, and spectacular landscapes of rock cones,
capped pinnacles known as ‘fairy chimneys’ in a vari-
ety of colours, where dwellings are known to have been
hewn from rock as far back as 4,000 B.C.

Turkey is split into 7 regions. Each has its own distinct
climate, landscape and traditions. The first four are named
according to their adjacent seas (the Black Sea, the Marma-
ra, the Aegean and the Mediterranean Regions), the other
three in relation to their location in the whole of Anatolia
(Central, Eastern and South East Anatolia Regions).

As a country, Turkey spans two continents (Europe and
Asia) and boasts some 8,000km of coastline. Whether you
are fond of art, history, archeology, nature or if your idea
of bliss is a relaxing beach or sailing holiday, there really is
something for everybody in Turkey.

People in Eastern Turkey are still very traditional in their
ways and beliefs. Religion plays a very important part in
their lives and the area is still not as well travelled by tour-
ists as the rest of Turkey. You will need to dress appro-
priately; we suggest no short skirts, dresses or singlets.
Some areas may require women to wear a headscarf, so it
may be wise to carry one with you (or it is possible to hire
scarfs before entering sacred sites). We recommend you
wear loose fitting clothes (as it can be extremely hot in
Eastern Turkey) which cover your shoulders and knees.

Today orchards, vineyards and footpaths, where veiled
peasants continue their unchanged life, all blend into a
realm of solid fantasy for ramblers. Surrounding heights

From this wonderland, the tour continues with a drive down

Some of the highlights along the Mediterranean will be:
• the picturesque city of Antalya with its ancient Roman
walled port, and the lovely ‘old town’, Kaleici, with its
beautifully restored Ottoman mansions and Hadrian’s
  Gate.
• the impressive ruins - including an amphitheatre and
a gymnasium - of Termessos, perched at an altitude of
over 1000 metres up a mountainside. Even Alexander the

  spectacular.
• the magnificent canyons of Koprulu and Selge
• the ancient sites of Perge and Aspendos which boasts

Tombs overlooking an amphitheatre, all dating back to
  600 B.C.
• Kekova, a peaceful group of picturesque islands well
scattered with very distinct rock sarcophagi, some even
  out in the sea.
• A walk along the mountain ridge above Kas, offering su-

     Christian Sites of Turkey
Very few people realise the integral role Turkey played in
the history of Christianity. Although born in Roman Pales-
tine, Christianity first became firmly established in Anato-
lia and began to spread throughout Anatolia through the
words and movement of St. Paul and other apostles. Many
of these journeys are recorded in the Bible’s “Acts of the
Apostles”. Please find below some other facts relating to
     Christianity in Turkey.

     • Where did Noah’s Ark land? - On Mt. Ararat.
     • Where was Abraham born? - In Sanliurfa (Ur in the bible).
     • Where are most of the sites mentioned in the Old Testa-
       ment located?
     • Where did Abraham, Sarah, Rebecca, Jacob, and Esau
       live? - In Anatolia.
     • Where was the name ‘christianity’ first introduced? - In
       Antakya (ancient Antioch).
     • Where was St. Paul born? - In Tarsus.
     • Where did St.Peter, St. Barnabus, and St.John as well as
       St. Paul preach?
     • Where were the Seven Churches of Asia Minor located?
       - In Western Turkey.
     • Where does legend have it that the Virgin Mary spent her
       last days? - In Seljuk.
     • Where was the world’s first Ecumenical Council held?
       - In Nicaea. (This was also where the Nicene Creed was
       written).
     • Where are the New Testament sites of Antioch (Antakya),
Seleucia and Peria (Cevlik), Iconium (Konya), Pisidian
Antioch (Yalvac), Derbe, Lystra, Tarsus, and Myra (Demre)

one of the most
spectacular
balloon flights
in the world.

Kaili and Lars pioneered ballooning in Cappadocia, and
share a love for adventure. It’s that passion, tempered with
more than twenty years of experience flying balloons that
has helped them become the best ballooning operators
in Turkey.
Every flight is a fantastic adventure, floating intimately
amongst the “fairy chimneys” and soaring over the magnifi-
cent Cappadocian landscape. A balloon flight in Cappadocia
with Kapadokya Balloons is truly “the experience of a life-
time!” And rest assured that there are no better pilots in
Turkey than Lars and Kaili.
A hot-air balloon flight is unique from all other experiences
of flight as there is no sensation of motion. Travelling at
heights of up to 1500 feet, the feeling is one of peace and
tranquility. The earth slowly descends and rotates below
you. Within moments after lifting off you become at ease
while you effortlessly drift over the treetops and the spec-
tacular Cappadocian landscape. It is like a dream to gently
float over the countryside in complete harmony with your
surroundings. The deep canyons and lush fertile valleys of
Cappadocia provide the balloons with an ideal playground
for a unique and memorable flight; gentle winds carry you
over places that could never be reached except by balloon.
Ballooning can be such fun! In season you can even pick
apricots from the trees! Come ballooning in Cappadocia,
for the best ballooning adventures on earth!
Please Note: Full refund if balloon flight cancelled due
to bad weather.

wHAT IS A GULET?
This singular design of the gulets, Turkey’s indigenous sea
going vessel, blends practicality and tradition in a relaxed
style that embodies a blue voyage. Over the years gulets
have evolved from traditional crafts for fishing and trans-
port into their present profile with a broad beam and wide
deck, equipped with motors as well as fully functional rig-
ging. These vessels generally have 3 – 12 twin or double
cabins with private facilities.

SPECTACULAR SAILInG In TURKEY
Turkey offers some of the most spectacular sailing waters
in the world, with its tiny islets and coves fringed with pine
forests and olive groves, and a chance to explore the world’s
greatest civilizations. From some of the Turquoise Coast’s
unspoilt and sheltered bays, you can see mountain peaks
rising to almost 3000 metres above sea level. Fortunately,
Turkey’s modern facilities and comfort have not overshad-
owed her ancient hospitality and slower pace of life.
Some of the highlights on this Turquoise Coast - which is
why the cruises are called Blue Voyages - are:
• An excursion (pay locally)on a small craft through a maze
of reeds in the Dalyan Delta, and up the Dalyan River. The
delta, with a long, sandy beach at its mouth, is a nature-
conservation area, and a refuge for large sea turtles
(caretta caretta) and blue crabs. Visit the fascinating
ancient harbour city of Caunos, with an Ampitheatre,
Acropol and Tombs to explore. At a bend in the river, high
on the cliff face above you can view magnificent tombs
which were carved into the rock in the 6th century B.C.
Enjoy Dalyan village, then continue further up the river to
take a mud bath (which is said to work wonders for your
complexion!) before returning to your boat. This trip can
be arranged locally on arrival at the entrance into the
Dalyan Delta in the Bay of Ekincik.
• Gocek, a very picturesque little fishing village which has
now been declared a national heritage, where no modern
building is allowed. There are some good restaurants and
marine theme bars along the waterfront here.
