Reflections on Todays Readings
My dear friends in Jesus,
I’ve been out of town for the last few weeks so I haven’t been personally able to write this column. I had a wonderful vacation but I am very glad to be back home. As some of you already know, I had an opportunity to travel with Dan and Judy Rodriguez to Japan. Their daughter Kristi lives in Japan. I had the opportunity to meet her when she returned to the States some years ago to prepare for her wedding. She went to Japan to teach in an International school and there she met a fellow teacher who was Japanese and they wanted to get married. I was able, at that time, to help her get all of her documents in order. She and her husband Makoto have two children, Shun, who is now seven and preparing for First Holy Communion and Kana who is four. We spent some time with the family but were also able to visit many historic places in Japan. I will write more about my trip later, but I wanted to say that one of the highlights of the trip was when we visited Hiroshima, the site of the first Atomic Bomb. It was a most moving experience and one that, I know, will change my life. This past week we also had some wonderful experiences here in our parish. On May 30, during the Vigil of Pentecost, we celebrated our annual Pentecost celebration. Everyone whom I have spoken to agrees that this was the best event we ever had. Many more people from many more nations participated and we experienced a wonderful sense of family while honoring our diversity we proclaimed our unity as a family of God. Thank you to all who worked so hard to plan, prepare, and participate in this wonderful St. Patrick tradition. On Sunday, the feast of Pentecost, at the Cathedral of St. Jude, our youth and young adults celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation. The celebration at the Cathedral was a marvelous experience for all. I was especially proud of our parish. Congratulations to each of you. May the Spirit of God which came down upon you, fill your hearts and minds with the love God has for you and the commitment to live more fully the gift of our Catholic faith. Thank you parents, sponsors and especially Theresa Franks and Joe and Colleen Nadolny for your hard work in preparing these young people. I would also like to welcome Br. Joshua Finn, T.O.R. who will be staying with us until Aug 15, 2009 to complete his CPE units at Tampa General Hospital.
St. Patrick’s is now offering Christian Counseling every Tuesday from 4PM into the evening. Our counselor is Ed Andrade. Ed is a registered mental health counseling intern who has over 30 years experience. As a former diocesan Director of Substance Abuse and AIDS Ministry as well as a Catholic school principal in both Ohio, and Florida, Ed has addressed many issues hindering good mental health. He has an extensive background in handling additions, anger management, and marriage and family therapy. There is a special rate for St. Patrick Parishioners, so if you have been thinking about wanting to talk with someone, please call Ed at: 727-612-8361 or 727-519-1038. Fr. Angelus has known Ed personally for over 20 years and can attest to his character and credentials. If you have considered talking with a counselor, I highly recommend that you take advantage of having this very qualified Catholic counselor in our midst.

Stewardship
Stewardship Newsletter
Fr. Stan Holland, TOR Rumor has it that there is a vegetable garden in the Friars’ fenced-in back yard. Last June the backyard looked like the northern desert area of Mexico and southwest Texas. Two dead trees were growing there. A third was overgrown and being choked off by a weedy vine which also was growing up the side of the house ruining the gutters and downspouts. The dead grass and weeds were an ugly brown and tan. The curtains and blinds of the friary were pulled shut so no one had to look at the ugly devastated waste area. With a lot of work and helpful advice from so many others the place looks like a verdant garden. The blinds in the house are open most of the time. The orange tree has come back to life. A dead tree was removed and the hole that remained is now a lovely fish pond with water lilies and colorful koi. It took a lot of hard work and sweat. Then the drought hit us hard and the amount of water needed to keep the yard beautiful had to be reduced. Then the rains came and we got spoiled. All of the pepper plants drowned but the corn was happy. We got used to the rains and forgot to water the garden now that the ban is lifted and the rains have stopped. The squash, lettuce, and beans are drying up because we got used to the rains. We let someone else take care of the garden and now we are in danger of losing it. Stewardship is like that. We work hard here in the parish to sustain its life. We begin to rely on outside forces to sustain us and we forget it is our responsibility, not the Bishop’s, not the government’s, not someone else’s. This is not a tirade against bingo, an outside force supplementing our needs. Bingo can be a very useful tool. The contributions to our youth ministry from bingo really helped us in our preparations to send our youth to CoveCrest LifeTeen Camp this summer. This is not a criticism. This is a congratulatory newsletter to the parish for all the money raised and the different ideas for fundraising that were a wild success. Well done. The Bishop, the government, the bingo aficionados are not responsible for our kids. We are. Let’s keep the garden watered and nourished and pruned. If we do this we’ll have an abundance of corn.
Thank you for sharing the gift of your treasure so that we can continue to do God’s work here.

Stewardship Reflection: Today’s second reading reminds us that we are the adopted sons and daughters—the heirs of God. We are good stewards of our inheritance when we share our faith and fulfill Our Lord’s command to “go...and make disciples of all the nations.” (Matthew 28:19) Faith Sharing Questions:
• • • I am aware of the gift of the Spirit transforming me when. . .This transformation is challenging for me when. . . I see the Spirit transforming my family. . parish. .city. . world. . . The way I live testifies to the Spirit of truth when. . .
As the 2009 Annual Pastoral Appeal fund drive continues; we are grateful to the 293 families in our parish that have made a sacrificial gift to this year’s Annual Pastoral Appeal. Our parish has pledged $108,415.14. toward the effort. Thanks to all who have supported this year’s Annual Pastoral Appeal. If you have not yet made a gift or pledge, please pray about your decision and make a pledge or a one-time gift. Pledge envelopes are located at the back of the church. Meeting our assessment is required each year to comply with our debt elimination agreement. The monies we give support various diocesan ministries to those in need as well as administrative services provided by the diocese to St. Patrick Parish. May God Bless you for your generosity.

R.C.I.A. CORNER
Over the next several weeks our focus here will be on the various movements as well as the Public Rites that are essential in the RCIA journey. The Inquiry process has already been explained in past articles. (If you missed it, go to the Parish Web site and check out prior bulletins). I thought this week I would take a step back and share the history of what we now know as RCIA. To begin putting together the history of what we now know as RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) we actually have to go back to the age of the apostles and the early church. After Pentecost, the twelve apostles when out to towns and countries proclaiming the Good News. Small communities came together studying the works of Jesus. They, as a community, worked on the call to conversion. After the first 100 years of the Church the conversion and initiation process began to take shape. It was this period which marks the beginning of the catechumenate as we have today. Over the next two hundred years the Journey evolved to the three year process, as the Church Fathers felt it was critical that the adult converts understood the full Judeo-Christian history of salvation by embracing its culture, history and teachings. Keep in mind, during these first three hundred years, those who came into the community understood clearly, his/her decision could lead to martyrdom. This all changed in the year 315 when the emperor Constantine legalized Christianity. The journey didn’t change, just the martyrdom part. By the fifth century infant baptism became the norm and the catechumenate essentially faded into the sunset. If adults wanted to enter the community, they would work one-on-one with the local priest. Blessed Pope John XXIII convened Vatican II (1963-1965). The cause of the catechumenate was taken up and the call for its reinstatement came to a vote. The results were overwhelming with 2,165 bishops voting for the reinstatement versus 91 who voted against. RCIA was re-born! From 1966 to 1969 the draft of the Norms for RCIA was issued to all parishes universally, with the final and current Norms published in 1972. In 1986 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops mandated the RCIA process be instituted in all parishes. The closing of the Bishops’ letter reflects the importance of RCIA in our parish: “ … (We) feel it is very important to the community for conversion of the entire parish … as it is RCIA (that puts) people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with [the person of] Jesus Christ. For us as Catholic Christians, this happens in and through the community of faith. In RCIA we find a strong emphasis on the role of the community, which is of critical importance to catechetical ministry. The Rite tells us that "the initiation of catechumens is a gradual process that takes place within the community of the faithful" (no. 4). The General Directory for Catechesis tells us “that the community of faith (the parish) is "the origin, locus and goal of catechesis" (no. 254).” John V. Williams, s.f.o., Director
