Word Choice Anchor Lesson Plan


									  Trait: Word Choice
 Introduction Lesson Plan- 3rd Grade
          (adapted from 6 + 1 Traits of Writing)

What to do:
  1. Introduction: Introduce the trait of Word Choice and
     discuss this activity to help clarify what this trait
     means. Use page 142 in 6 + 1 Traits of Writing, as
     well as other resources you have. Here is a quick
     summary of word choice:
         Beautiful language
         Rich, colorful, precise language that
          communicates not just in a functional way, but
          also in a way that moves and enlightens the
         Strong word choice clarifies and expands ideas
         Creates images in the mind
  2. Brainstorming: Look through catalogs, menus, travel
     brochures, etc. for examples for good word choice.
     Brainstorm a list of ideas.
  3. Reading/Modeling: Read aloud a poem to model from The
     Important Book. Discuss the word choice in the sample.
  4. Student Work: Have your students write their own poem
     modeled after the poem(s) in the book. For this
     activity, the students will be writing a trouble poem.
     Suggest editing the poems specifically for word
