Principal’s News
Welcome back everyone . We trust you had a relaxing and safe holiday with your
families. It’s wonderful to see all the children and staff back at school ready for a
busy new term. We have 3 netball teams competing in interschool sport this Friday.
This weekend sees the first P&C Working Bee for the year and next weekend is the
Anzac March in Port Douglas. Our school cross country is on April 30 and NAPLAN
testing is scheduled a fortnight later, and that’s only the first half of term!
Currently the Qld Teachers’ Union has directed teachers not to participate in
NAPLAN testing. However, this is not confirmed that this will occur and I will keep
you informed of any developments.
              PUPIL FREE DAY
Miallo hosted an inservice on teaching reading comprehension with
Julatten and Daintree teachers attending also. Thanks to our Head of
Curriculum Kris Mills for her excellent work. We delved into strategies
that efficient readers have and how to be explicit in teaching those
strategies to other children. There was plenty of vigorous discussion of strategies,
lesson plans and connecting this information to our own experience as readers and
teachers. Teaching reading comprehension strategies will be our main focus this
term in our fortnightly curriculum meetings.
A huge thanks to the P&C again for the purchase of ten new
computers to replace broken/slow ones in the computer lab.
They look fantastic and mean our lab is now fully functional!
Feel free to come in and have a look. It’s a big investment
from the P&C but the impact this has on our students’
learning can’t be understated. Thank you from all of the
students and staff.
Similar to last year, local schools have been invited to participate in the ANZAC day
parade held in Port Douglas. Students are encouraged to attend and meet opposite
the Port Heritage Building (old Shire Hall site) between 10-10:15am in their full
school uniform. We then join in the march down Macrossan Street for the ANZAC
service held at ANZAC park.
