Places to go, things to do for kids
     in the Sag Harbor area

Introduction

?
S
ag Harbor is a little off the beaten path
of the villages of the East End some
know as The Hamptons. Signs and
logos* of whales around town identify its rich
nineteenth century heritage as the third largest
whaling port in New England. Galleries
lining its winding main street signify its
current attraction to artists. In summer its
population, including day trippers, swells
from a village of something over two thou-
sand to well over eight and, for its loyal
residents, it is a year-round thriving
community with lots to do for kids. Our
brochure includes annual events, seasonal
activities, recreation, education, amusement
and adventure.
* A treasure hunt will turn up at least 12 reminders of Sag Harbor’s
whaling past. Hint, start at the Wharf Shop.

East End telephone numbers are in the (631) area code.
All others have the area code listed.

P
roximity to New York City adds to the
attraction of the East End. That hasn’t
       prevented communities from developing
their own show stoppers. In Sag Harbor alone
these include a nationally renown repertory
theater, a major whaling museum, a fusty, musty
art movie house with requisite popcorn and
festival films.

T
he outdoors is the East End’s greatest
         draw: ocean beaches, Montauk’s famous
lighthouse, a sports and commercial fishing
fleet with centuries of traditions. Camping
facilities, parks and playing fields allow families
to enjoy the scene without the high costs.
Calm ponds and bays, a turbulent surf, invite
canoes and kayaks as well as boogie boards.

The Arts
I
s it the fabled light or the fellow company of
other artists that draws artists of all schools
and every media to Sag Harbor and environs?
While scores of world famous artists work in
studios hidden in the hills of Montauk or the
woods of the Springs, visitors are invited to find
their own inspiration and try their own hand.
Workshops in theater, art, photography, dance,
martial arts and yoga are offered through-out the
year sponsored by libraries, churches and long
established institutions like The Bay Street Theater
in Sag Harbor, Guild Hall in East Hampton, and
the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton.
                                                                THE ARTS
Art
Puppetry, portraiture, pottery,
painting, printmaking and
paper-mache will get you
started.

When Help is
Needed
S
ometimes we need help whether it is a
program for young people with a drink-
ing problem or options for parents looking
for day care coverage. Many teens need jobs or
want an opportunity to volunteer their help to
others.
