In September 2009, a 140m section of ditch was lined using Concrete Cloth
by AMCO, (Amalgamated Construction). The project was commissioned by
Network Rail to provide drainage at the top of a railway embankment in
Chipping Sodbury, Gloucestershire.

This was the first time AMCO had used CC for ditch lining and the project
was heralded as a major success. CC was significantly quicker and easier
to install than conventional concrete slab construction, reducing the project
cost and time on site. The Concrete Cloth was supplied in man portable rolls
for ease of use on a site with limited access.

“Concrete Cloth is incredibly quick and easy to use. It allowed us to line over
100m of ditch in less than 8 hours, with the minimum of man power and plant 09:06
equipment. The time and expense saved, means I will have no hesitation in
recommending Concrete Cloth for future projects.”

Lining of Ditches using Concrete Cloth

Concrete Cloth (CC) can be rapidly unrolled to form a
hardened, water proof concrete ditch or tank lining. It will
conform to a range of ditch profiles and curves and requires
no specialist plant equipment for installation. CC has a
minimum design life of over 10 years and is significantly
quicker and less expensive to install compared to
conventional concrete ditch lining. Two men should be able to
line a 60° 300mm V-ditch in 15 minutes/8m length.

  Technical Background

CC consists of a 3-dimensional fibre matrix containing a
specially formulated dry concrete mix. A PVC backing on one
surface ensures the material is completely water proof. The
material can be hydrated either by spraying or by being fully
immersed in water. Once hydrated the material remains
flexible and workable for 2 hours and gains 80% of its 28 day
strength in the first 24 hours. CC is available in 3 thicknesses,
4, 8 and 13mm. CC8 (8mm) is recommended for most ditching
applications.

 Ditch Design

CC comes in a standard roll width of 1.1m and this should be taken into account when designing the ditch profile in order to
minimise wastage. For the best results we recommend using a 60 degree V-ditch profile which can be dug using a standard
bucket attachment. A minimum of 100mm should be allowed at overlaps between layers of Cloth and at the edge of the ditch.
Figures 1-3 show ditch profiles using 1, 2 and 3 layers of CC.
