Technically Speaking
2009 has definitely been the year of technology for the Venango Area Chamber
of Commerce, beginning with the new website launch in March, a new email
service in April and our venture into the world of social media. While many of
our members have embraced these new tools for doing business, others remain
skeptical as to the real benefits of the “online” world. I think it is important to
note that here at the chamber we still believe that nothing replaces the value of
face to face interaction with chamber and community members. That's why
you've continued to see the same tried and true publications and events from
the past. We will continue to make the newsletter available in hard copy and
invite members to attend mixers, lunches and other member gatherings.
Why such an investment in technology? Because this continues to be a terrific way to engage many of our
members, expand our network and increase our efficiency. And most importantly we are passing everything we
learn onto our members. In 2010 we will continue to enhance our website, with the addition of e commerce
and feature to further promote our members. The Brown Bag lunch series will continue with the broader theme
of technology. The first one of the year, Wednesday, January 20th will be a presentation about the new
Windows 7. Through the Microsoft® Community Connections program, our technology partner CS Technolo-
gies Plus will present a 45-60 minute program how Windows 7 can help leaders and organizations enhance their
business relationships. Depending on the level of interest, additional sessions may be added in the morning
and afternoon. So mark your calendar and watch for more information in the January Business Connector.

American Cancer Society Helps Businesses save Money, save Lives
Studies show that more than 70 percent of adult smokers say they want to quit, but without help, fewer than
five percent succeed. Tabacco use is also the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in
the United States. You can help your employees beat the odds by creating a work environment that will
encourage them to quit for goof.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s estimates, the annual cost of tobacco use to an
employer averages $3,783 per smoker per year. Your company can reduce costs and increase productivity by
encouraging employees to quit tobacco with the American Cancer Society’s 2009 Tobacco-Free Workplace
Toolkit. To support your efforts in the workplace, this toolkit can be used as part of a year-long health
promotion or wellness program. These resources can also be used to promote the Great American Smokeout®
on the third Thursday in November.

The kit includes tips on how to address your workplace about going tobacco-free; sample policies; fun,
team-building activities like Adopt a Smoker; information on American Cancer Society programs and services
such as FreshStart® and Quitline®; and quit smoking promotional tools such as desktop helpers and sample
newsletter articles.

For more information on the American Cancer Society Smoke-Free Workplace Toolkit, call your local office at
800.227.2345 and ask to speak to a member of the corporate relations staff. To see the Society’s other wellness

The National Hardwood Lumber Association is a nonprofit association composed of more than 1,600 member
firms that produce, sell, and use hardwood lumber or provide services to the hardwood industry. The association
was founded in 1898 to establish a uniform system of grading rules for the measurement and inspection of
hardwood lumber and still serves as the administrator of those standards.
The high value of hardwood lumber dictates that boards are graded each time that they are bought or sold
within the hardwood industry on the way from the sawmill to their final use in furniture, flooring, or paneling.
Hardwood lumber inspectors are responsible for determining the species, grade, and volume of each piece of
lumber, and are employed by sawmills, dry kiln operators, wholesale lumber distributors, manufacturing plants,
exporters, importers, and other types of firms that utilize hardwood lumber.
In 1948, NHLA established its training school in Memphis to teach these rules and the application of the grading
system to help meet an increasing demand for skilled lumber inspectors throughout the world. To this day, the
NLHA Lumber Inspection Training School in Memphis is the only school of its kind in the world and has attracted
students from Canada, Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia, as well as the United States. More than 6,700
students have graduated from the Inspection Program, many of whom are now in management or ownership
positions in the industry and are sending their children or employees to complete the course.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for those interested in a career in hardwood lumber inspection,” said Dr.
Christopher Reber, executive dean of the Venango Campus. “Since more than 100 of the 1,600 world-wide
members of NHLA are located in the region served by Clarion University–Venango Campus, offering a program
that prepares hardwood lumber inspectors to move into management and ownership positions supports the
campus’ mission to contribute to the area’s workforce development.”
