Abstract:
An autonomous vehicle will be designed to look for moving heat-emitting targets and engage them
while patrolling a limited area and avoiding ground obstacles. Ultrasonic and passive IR sensors will be
integrated with an off-shelf vehicle and AirSoft weaponry. An LCD display will display the number of
engagements and battery level.

Design Objectives:
   • Power will be supplied internally by a battery source
   • Interface ultrasonic and passive IR sensors to the microcontroller
   • Interface an AirSoft automatic weapon to the platform
   • Utilize stepper motors to align weaponry with target
   • Interface LCD with microcontroller to display number of engagements and battery level

Design/Functionality Overview:
The vehicle will be controlled by a microcontroller and will “patrol” an area looking for moving heat-
emitting targets to engage. Power will be provided internally using batteries. Ultrasonic sensors will be
used for obstacle avoidance and range-finding while passive IR sensors will aid in the detection of
targets. Once a target is detected, a stepper motor will be used to align the weapon with the target. An
ultrasonic sensor on the barrel will be used to determine the range of the target. Depending on the
range, the vehicle will engage the target. Once the target is no longer emitting heat (or has moved out of
range), the vehicle will resume patrol. Standard drive motors will be used for vehicle movement.

Project-Specific Success Criteria (list 5):
   • An ability to detect a heat-emitting target
   • An ability to determine and display the number of engagements and battery level
   • An ability to fire the weapon
   • An ability to turn weapon to face target
   • An ability to avoid collisions with inanimate objects

Software Module List:
The software shall contain the following modules:
    a. Fire()
        - Activate the electronic trigger for the AirSoft gun
    b. Range()
        - Activate the ultrasonic pinger and calculate the distance of the target
    c. Look()
        - Activate the ultrasonic sensor and look for an obstacle-free path
    d. RotateLeft()
        - Rotate the stepper motor controlling the AirSoft gun up to 180◦ to the left
    e. RotateRight()
        - Rotate the stepper motor controlling the AirSoft gun up to 180◦ to the right
    f. Forward()
        - Move the drive motors in forward direction
    g. Reverse()
        - Move the drive motors in reverse direction
    h. TurnRight()
        - Move the drive motors in opposite directions to make the tank base turn right
    i. TurnLeft()
        - Move the drive motors in opposite directions to make the tank base turn left
    j. BatteryLevel()
        - Poll battery level
    k. LCDDisplay()
        - Toggle between battery level and number of engagments
