Cherry Blossom Friends Let your student’s discover all the gifts that come with the Japanese Cherry Trees. Author Reading and Workshop Corkey Hay DeSimone, author and illustrator of Cherry Blossom Friends can come to your school to read her book and do a cherry blossom workshop with your students. Corkey wrote and illustrated Cherry Blossom Friends for the Smithsonian and Washington’s Cherry Blossom Festival. It is now in its second edtion and full of interesting facts about the cherry trees and Washington D.C. How Does the Reading Work? Corkey presents the books to your students on her projector and reads from her lap top. After the reading Corkey talks about the history of the Cherry Blossom and why this gift of trees is so important. What Happens During the Workshop? Corkey brings craft supplies for each student which includes: a cherry blossom blank card, tissue paper and glue sticks. She also bring a bulletin board sized mural of a cherry tree. The children decorate their cards and put them up on the tree. Depending on age and available time we can also add a writing component to the workshop. 40 minutes to one hour. Workshop and Activity Fees: Activity Fee - $10 per students (no speaking fees). Each student’s activity fee includes a personalized and signed book by the author, and all craft supplies. We prefer a 60 to 100 student minimum to cover our time and costs. Corkey has been creating for children for over 19 years and works with the Smithsonian, World Wildlife Fund and many other groups to help themdevelop their children’s educational material. She just recently nished a project with WWF’s Earth Hour where she created a children’s website focused on environmental education: www.EarthHourKids.org Corkey reads at schools all around the area and can provide references.
