Overview

This project is aimed to develop a self-directed course for teachers at Birdville
Elementary School. The course will train teachers in using Microsoft Excel 2007 based
gradebook.

The principle of Birdville Elementary School wants all teachers to use MS Excel to keep
track of student grades. These excel files will then be exported to the new student
database which was implemented recently. After preliminary needs assessment it was
ascertained that:

       • Each classroom has a single computer connected to a LAN, as well as a copy of
MS Excel(There is no computer lab on campus)
       • The principle wants the teachers to spend no more than one-two hours on the
           training
       • There is no funding available for instruction-led training (ILT) to use the Excel
           based gradebook
       • Teachers will complete the training during office hours or study hall
       • The library has three computers with MS Excel software
       • Most teachers use MS Word on a regular basis, but majorities still use pencil and
           paper to compute grades.

After weighing the pros and cons of the needs assessment a task analysis was conducted
to decide the course plan. It was decided that the course will have three modules:

  I. Introduction to MS Excel basics
 II. Introduction to gradebook template
III. Working with gradebook template

The treatment and ISD strategies were then ascertained. It was decided that there will be
a mastery quiz at the end of the module. A pedagogical agent will be used to take the
learners through the course. Learning objectives were defined for each module. A
prototype lesson will be created as the first deliverable to the principle of Birdville
elementary school.

Finally two peer reviews were conducted for the prototype lesson.

                                                                                               3

Problem Statement
Birdville Elementary School has implemented a new database. MS Excel will be used to
export files into the database as it ODBC compatible. Teachers have to be taught to use
MS Excel to maintain a student gradebook which will then be exported to the database.

Condition:
Teachers do not know to use MS Excel to maintain student record and export it to the
student database.

Criterion:
Teachers should be able to maintain gradebook using MS excel and export it to the
student database.

Possible Causes:
MS Word is preferred over MS Excel to maintain student grades. Majority of teachers
use pencil and paper to compute grades.

Target Audience

Teachers at Birdville Elementary School

Goal of the Course

The goal of the course is to train teachers to use MS Excel to maintain student records.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course teachers will be able to:

   • Relevance and applicability of Assessments to course objectives
I think that the assessment could have been made more interactive, I had taken

       appropriate for this course.

       put to practice.

Talking about multimedia, the use of text and pictures add to the visuals.
