How to get your school or youth group involved

What will we need?

To get things started you will need:

 A copy of the Self Assessment Form for teachers or youth leaders
available from the bottom of this page
       http://www.peacemala.org.uk/news/newaward/newaward.html
    Peace Mala Educational resources

A copy of the Teachers Guide and the individual Peace Mala kits for your
pupils or young people are essential. It would also be helpful if you have a
copy of our DVD film and the Peace Mala prayer book. With all of these
educational resources at hand you will be ready to start on your Peace Mala
journey. Go to the ‘purchasing’ section of our website and you will see our
full range of Peace Mala resources. You can order what you need through
our registered office.

Where should we place Peace Mala in the curriculum?

The vision of Peace Mala sits in the heart-centre of a school or youth group’s
values system. In Wales, where Peace Mala began, the project has been
seen as covering the following key educational concepts as outlined by the
Welsh Assembly Government:

    Interdependence
    Citizenship and stewardship
    Need and rights
    Diversity
    Sustainable change
    Quality of life
    Values and perceptions
    Conflict resolution
In the school curriculum, Peace Mala can be used within RE, PSE,
Humanities, Drama, English, Media Studies, Music, Dance, Art,
Global Citizenship and Environmental Responsibilities.

Some primary schools have placed Peace Mala into their RE planning so that a
chosen year group can study and explore Peace Mala during a particular term
every year. This is a good way to go about it as it encourages continuity and
ensures that each pupil will have learned about Peace Mala before they leave
the school. Placing Peace Mala Accreditation into the ‘school plans for future
development’ is also an excellent idea and sets a target the whole school can
work towards.

Schools that are already Eco Schools or have set up Peace Councils and
‘Buddies’ schemes are in an excellent position to meet several of our key
areas of suggested action.

Many schools have introduced Peace Gardens and rainbow art work to show
that they are Peace Mala schools. This is a lovely idea. Please be as creative
as possible and encourage everyone, including parents and the local
community, to join in. Let them feel part of what you are doing as a Peace
Mala School or Youth Group. Remember to celebrate the diversity of faiths,
cultures and lifestyles whilst remembering that we are all members of the
same human family. Don’t forget the importance of environmental issues and
the animal kingdom. We all need to respect and cherish each other.

How long will it take to achieve Peace Mala Accreditation?

Some schools or youth groups achieve Peace Mala accreditation within one
academic year. Others take a little longer. There is no rush or deadline to
reach. Steady progress is best. A school or youth group applying for Peace
Mala accreditation must send their completed self assessment form with their
recorded results and evidence to our registered office. This information will
identify progress toward achieving all or most targets in the seven areas of
the Peace Mala action plan.

Once we are happy that the criteria have been met and evidence produced,
the school or youth group will receive a Peace Mala Award certificate. They
will also be invited to apply for the Peace Mala flag.

Once accreditation is achieved, qualifying schools and youth groups can
celebrate their award in a whole school assembly or celebratory gathering. If
they wish a Peace Mala representative to be present, this can be requested
and the charity will look into ways of making this possible if funding for travel
is available.

Peace Mala schools and youth groups are expected to share good practice
with others who wish to join our global community.
A school or youth group can apply for re-assessment every three
years.

If you need help or advice please do not hesitate to contact the Peace Mala
Registered Office. We are here to help you.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Making a Peace Mala from a Kit
Part of the process of discovering the vision and message of the Peace Mala is the actual task
of making it and then wearing it. Children, especially those of primary school age and first
year in secondary, love making these bracelets. For children, the bracelet and its coloured
beads appeal in a visual, kinaesthetic and tactile way. This is especially important for
children who may have learning difficulties, but it is equally important for children of all
abilities. By using the senses, the message of the Peace Mala is:

         Heard
         Seen
         Touched

Making the Peace Mala is the fun activity at the end of all the research tasks found in the
‘Guide for Teachers’. Let’s not take fun out of education! When made, children look forward
to taking their Peace Malas home and being able to explain the symbolism and messages of
this special bracelet to their friends, neighbours and family.
Wearing the bracelet is also a reminder of what Peace Mala is about and that we should all
try our best to keep the ‘Golden Rule’
