The r e s u l t s from t h e two p r e v i o u s i n v e n t o r i e s conducted i n Maine were r e p o r t e d by Ferguson and Longwood (1960) and Ferguson and K i n g s l e y (1972). S t a t i s t i c s on land a r e a s , t i m b e r volume, and numbers of t r e e s from t h e t h i r d i n v e n t o r y conducted i n 1980-82 a l s o have been p u b l i s h e d (Powell and Dickson 1984). This r e p o r t presents f o r e s t resource data i n c l u d i n g biomass s t a t i s t i c s based on t h e t h i r d i n v e n t o r y , The e s t i m a t e s of t i m b e r l a n d a r e a and t i m b e r volume i n t h i s r e p o r t a r e a summary of i n f o m a t i o n c o l l e c t e d ; t h e y a r e based on a p a r t i a l remeasurement of f i e l d p l o t s e s t a b l i s h e d d u r i n g e a r l i e r i n v e n t o r i e s and on a measurement of 2,275 new f i e l d p l o t s . Weight e q u a t i o n s have been developed f o r t h e important t r e e s p e c i e s i n Maine (Young e t a l . 1980). Those e q u a t i o n s were s u b s t i t u t e d f o r t h e c o n v e n t i o n a l volume e q u a t i o n s used d u r i n g t h e c o m p i l a t i o n of s t a t e w i d e s t a t i s t i c s t o p r o v i d e an e s t i m a t e of biomass i n a l l t r e e s above t h e stump. Bowever, t h e s e e q u a t i o n s do n o t a l l o w f o r t h e e s t i m a t i o n of s p e c i f i c components of t r e e s such a 8 stump biomass (between t h e ground l e v e l and a 1-foot stump h e i g h t ) and m e r c h a n t a b l e stem biomass (between a 1 - f o o t stump h e i g h t and a 4-inch t o p d o b ) ; s e p a r a t e t e c h n i q u e s were used t o d e r i v e t h e s e e s t i m a t e s , Stump biomass was developed through a two-step p r o c e s s . F i r s t , t h e volume i n stumps was e s t i m a t e d from r e g r e s s i o n e q u a t i o n s u s i n g d i a m e t e r a t b r e a s t h e i g h t a s t h e dependent variable ( ~ a i l e 1982). The weight o f t h e merchantable stem was c a l c u l a t e d by a p p l y i n g weightlvolume r a t i o s t o e s t i m a t e s of volume. Timber volume was e s t i m a t e d from new r e g r e s s i o n e q u a t i o n s f o r b o t h sawtimber and growing s t o c k ( ~ c o t 1979, 1981). t The d i f f e r e n c e between above-stump biomass d e r i v e d from t h e weight r e g r e s s i o n e q u a t i o n s and t h e independent e s t i m a t e of merchantable stem biomass r e s u l t e d i n t h e biomass i n t h e t o p s and branches.

As s t a t e d p r e v i o u s l y , t h e e s t i m a t e of aboveground t r e e biomass i n a l l t r e e s on Maine's t i m b e r l a n d s h a s a sampling e r r o r of 1.0 p e r c e n t , o r 1,504.4 _t 15.0 m i l l i o n g r e e n t o n s . However, t h e e s t i m a t e of aboveground t r e e biomass of a l l t r e e s i n Androscoggin County h a s a sampling e r r o r of 6 , 3 p e r c e n t , o r 18.8 2 1.2 m i l l i o n green tons. Therefore, county-level estimates a r e o f t e n considerably l e s s r e l i a b l e than state-level estimates, I n general, a s the sample s i z e used t o d e r i v e an e s t i m a t e d e c r e a s e s i n r e l a t i o n t o t h e t o t a l , t h e sampling e r r o r increases. Some of t h e e s t i m a t e s p r e s e n t e d i n t h e t a b l e s have e r r o r s t h a t a r e g r e a t e r t h a n 25 p e r c e n t and may n o t be r e l i a b l e . An e s t i m a t e w i t h an e r r o r of 50 p e r c e n t o r more would n o t be s i g n i f i c a n t l y d i f f e r e n t from z e r o , and an e s t i m a t e w i t h an e r r o r between 25 and 50 p e r c e n t would be s u s p e c t , Consequently, t h o s e e s t i m a t e s t h a t have e r r o r s exceeding 25 p e r c e n t should be used w i t h c a u t i o n , The second important s o u r c e of e r r o r i n t h i s r e p o r t o c c u r s when two independent e s t i m a t e s a r e used t o d e r i v e a t h i r d .
