                              Finding Stock Returns

Question: What has the trend been in Dell’s monthly stock prices?
How can you get this data into an Excel worksheet? How can you
get the values of stock market indexes?

If you have an Internet connection, you can use the following directions
to find Dell’s current situation. Otherwise, you can use the information
in this file to answer the questions above.

Go to http://finance.yahoo.com. You will begin with this screen. Click on
Historical Quotes under the Research & Education heading (shown with
hand icon). This will take you to the next screen where you can get
individual quotes for a stock or an index. Note: You will need to know
the ticker symbol of the stock or index before moving to the next screen.
To find the ticker symbol, you may click on Symbol Lookup above the
Get Quotes button.

After clicking on Historical Quotes, you will come to this page. You
may select the starting and ending dates and whether you want the daily,
weekly, or monthly stock quotes for a company. You will also need to
enter a Ticker Symbol for either a stock or an index. We have selected
to receive monthly price quotes over the past four years for Dell. Click
on Get Historical Data to go to the next screen.

After clicking on Get Historical Data, you will come to this screen. This
screen provides the monthly high, low, and close quotes for Dell over
the past four years. The adjusted close adjusts for dividends and stock
splits for the stock and will be a different number than the close. The
adjusted close tries to reconcile any price differences created by a stock
split or a stock dividend.

To download the information in the table, you must scroll down until
you reach the part of the screen shown below. You can now download
this data in a spreadsheet format to use in Excel. You will next click on
Download Spreadsheet Format in order to save this file.

We have extracted the complete record of all the monthly data shown in
the screen above, to make it more readable. This is shown on the
following page.

What has happened to Dell’s stock price over the last four years? When
was Dell’s most recent stock split (i.e., when does the adjusted close
price first differ from the close price)?

popular indexes below.

Here are some for the U.S. stock market:
 Dow Jones Industrial Average: ^DJI
 S & P 500: ^SPC
 Nasdaq Composite: ^IXIC

Note: we have scrolled down the screen to get the portion that has the
chart.

As the chart shows, the Nasdaq has been hammered in the last year.
Notice the boxes below the chart. By entering a symbol, you can
compare a stock (or an index) with either the S&P, Nasdaq, or Dow.
