All income variables are expressed in thousands of Italian Lire.
The respondents are asked if they received such benefits, and if so, an
estination of their monetary value; in case they were not able to quantify the
monetary value (this happens in 15% of hte cases for the 1998 dataset),
they were asked to specify teh benfits received, and teh data profiver
imputed their value.
Interests have been calculated by the data provider by multiplying the size
of the holdings in the various forms of savings by two different interest
rates (estimated based on info coming both from the survey and from
external sources):
- one for bank current account deposits, bank savings deposits (i.e.
savings books, both tied and not), certificates of deposit, repos, postal
deposits in current or savings accounts, and postal savings certificates;
- another for Italian government securities (BOTs or T-bills, CCTs or T-
certificates, BTPs or T-bonds, CTZs or zero coupons, and other such as
CTEs, CTOs et al.), bonds, shares of Italian mutual funds, Italian shares of
listed companies (at their market value at end-1998), shares of limited
liability company (at their estimated realizable value at end-1998), shares of
partnerships (at their estimated realizable value at end-1998), managed
savings (by banks, SIMs and trust companies), foreign securities, i.e.
issued by non-residents (incl. bonds, government securities, shares and
other), and loans to cooperatives.
Please note that dividends received by entrepreneurs actually working in
the enterprise are included in V5.
This includes actual rents received during 1998 from all properties owned
by the household at the end of 1998 or disposed of during 1998.
Including private pensions and life annuities from Italian private bodies (i.e.
insurances).
In Italy, individual supplementary pensions with tax advantages come in the
form of individual pension plans (PIP) through life insurance policies; by
2002 there were roughly 300,000 PIPs.

Interests paid have been calculated by the data provider by multiplying an
interest rate (estimated based on info coming both from the survey and
from external sources) by the amount of the debts owed at the end of the
year to banks or financial companies (and not to relations or friends not
living in the house) serving to meet needs of the household and the house
(and not those in connection with the business); includes interess paid on
the following types of debts:
- debts for the purchase or restructuring of buildings;
- debts for the purchase of real goods (e.g. jewellery, gold, etc.);
- debts for the purchase of motor vehicles (e.g. cars);
- debts for the purchase of other durables (furniture, electrical apliances,
etc.);
- debts for the purchase of non-durable goods (e.g. holidays, furs, etc.) and
owed for other expenditures.
This records the rent that could be potentially received (excluding
condominum charges, heating or other sundry expenses) for the main
residence if owned as estimated by the respondent.
That records the respondent's best estimate of the price he/she could ask
for the dwelling in which he/she lives (unoccupied, including any cellar,
garage or attic).
Information not separately available in original survey (treatment
allowances for manual workers are included in V25SR and sickness
benefits for white-collar employees paid by the employer are included in
V1NET).
Information not separately available in original dataset (temporary cash
benefits from INAIL are part of the wage slip and thus included in V1NET).
Please note that the civil invalid's pension is means-tested.
Information not separately available in original dataset (care allowances are
included in V18S1).

The pension system was drastically reformed in 1995 with a new system
based on flexible retirement age and contributions rather than earnings; old-
age pensions will be awarded following new qualifying conditions only to
persons hired after 1.1.96; the amount of the pension on the other hand is
already partially calculated following the new rules for persons who had
less than 15 years of contributions on 31.12.92.
Includes all old-age pensions from special systems for specific categories
(industrial managers, liberal professions, air transport workers, journalists,
etc.), some private occupational pensions and some old-age pensions of
unknown origin.
Information not separately available in original survey (long-service or
seniority pensins are included in V19S1b/V19S1c).
Including survivor's pensions to the spouse, children grand-children or
other relatives of a pensioner or a worker (pensione di reversibilità e
pensione indiretta).
The variable "other pensions" includes all pensions not exactly identified by
the respondent, the larger part of which being from the National Institute for
Social Protection (INPS, Istituto Nazionale della Previdenza Sociale) , but it
also includes pensions from special systems for specific categories
(industrial managers, liberal professions, air transport workers, journalists,
etc.) and some private occupational pensions.
Information not separately available in original survey. In Italy there exists a
benefit for families with children, which varies with the income; this is not
separable from the wage slip and included in V1NET.
Including ordinary and extraordinary earnings complements for company
workers in certain categories and areas, as well as the mobility allowance
for all salaried workers who qualified for the extaordinary earnings
supplement.
Information not separately available in original survey (part of the pay slip
and included in V1NET).

Including war pensions (pensioni di guerra) from the Treasury.
Information not available in original survey; the care allowance (assegno di
accompagnamento) is paid directly to invalidity pensioners who need help
to move around or who need permanent attendance to accomplish daily
tasks and is included in V18S1.
Includes private scholarships as well.
Replaced the social pension (pensione sociale) from 1.1.96.
Information not separately available in original survey (occupational
pensions are in V19S1r and V19SR). In Italy there are two main funds for
voluntary occupational tax-incentivised pensions: ‘closed’ funds for
employees, which are based on collective agreement between employers’
associations and trade unions and ‘open’ pension funds which are open to
employees and the self-employed, managed by banks and insurance
companies. They are all voluntary in nature and generally on a defined-
contribution basis.
