I If you were there, I hope we had the chance to meet. If you weren’t, you
should’ve been, because Gear Expo 2003 was definitely the place to be for
anyone involved in the gear-manufacturing industry. Hundreds exhibited,
and a good time was had by all. On the part of the Gear Solutions staff and
myself, I’d like to thank those of you who stopped by to give us your words
of support, and also welcome all the new readers who took the opportunity
to sign up with us. We will continue doing our best to bring you a solid Published by

As for the November issue of Gear Solutions, this is the first of our 1-800-366-2185
annual “buyer’s guide” directories. We hope you’ll find this information

Again, I hope we had the opportunity to see each other at Gear Expo
2003. If not, why not go ahead and pencil in the IMTS show next year?

FARO Debuts Advantage Line
of Measurement Products
On September 4, 2003, FARO Technologies,
Inc., announced that it has fortified its position
as the market-share leader in the portable coor-
dinate measurement machine (CMM) field with
its latest product line: the Advantage Series.
The Advantage FaroArm and the FARO Advantage
Tracker will be the company’s most inexpensive
CMMs, with prices in the United States starting
at just $19,900 and $69,900, respectively.
“We’re known for having the highest accuracy
and the longest range, but some manufacturers
don’t need the two-tenths (.0002”) precision of
our Platinum FaroArm or the 230-foot range of
our Tracker SI,” says FARO President and CEO
Simon Raab. “What they do need is a cost-effi-
cient means of improving quality. FARO has
always done that, and now the FARO Advantage
Series does it for even less.”
The Advantage FaroArm retains the ergonomics
and portability of the company’s platinum and
titanium FaroArms, and is ideal for applications
with lower tolerance requirements. It comes ready
to measure with a mounting plate, one 3mm and
two 6mm zircon hard probes, a custom-fitted
case, a one-year standard warranty, and it can be
customized to the client’s exact needs. FARO Technologies’ Advantage FaroArm
According to FARO Hardware Product Manager

online availability of price quoting for replacement parts through the
company’s Web site.
Philadelphia Gear customers can request price quotes at no cost
via the Web site’s “Parts Quote” section. Price quotes can be provid-
                                                ed for Philadelphia Gear
                                                designed parts and
                                                equipment, as well as
parts for gearboxes manufactured by other companies. This new sys-
tem streamlines the replacement parts ordering process, reducing
customer downtime due to inoperable equipment.
For Philadelphia Gear gearboxes, customers need only submit their
machine’s model number, located on the nameplate in the box
labeled “Size/Type.” Once they’ve entered this information, cus-
tomers gain access to a detailed technical drawling and list of all the
parts, where they can simply click on the desired part. This informa-
tion, along with the gearbox serial number and customer contact infor-
mation, is all that is needed to submit a quote request. Within 24
hours, a representative from Philadelphia Gear will respond with a
price quote for the necessary parts.
For non-Philadelphia Gear gearing equipment, customers can sub-
mit technical drawings via the Web site, as well as other product-spe-
cific information crucial to identifying replacement parts. Once this
information is sent, a representative from Philadelphia Gear will con-
tact the customer with a quote.
With over 100 years of technical drawings and other proprietary
information in inventory, Philadelphia Gear is well equipped to handle
customers’ requests in a knowledgeable and timely fashion. The new
online parts quote system enables Philadelphia Gear to better serve
its growing customer base.
“Philadelphia Gear is continuing to increase our online presence in
an effort to provide our customers with the most convenient and reli-
able gearing solutions available,” says Carl Rapp, president and CEO.
“We are excited about the increased speed, efficiency, and overall
customer service improvements in parts replacement our customers
will experience with our new online price quote system.”
A founding member of the American Gear Manufacturers
Association (AGMA), Philadelphia Gear offers products and services
found in use worldwide; from conveyor gear drives used in long wall
coal mining operations, to emergency repair services critical to the
power generation industries. The company serves thousands of cus-
tomers across the globe from its regional service and manufacturing
facilities in New Castle, Deleware; Birmingham, Alabama; Chicago,
Houston, and Los Angeles.

Dana Corp. Announces
New Lightweight Spicer Tag Axle
The Dana Corporation’s Commercial Vehicle Systems Division has
introduced a new patent-pending tag axle specifically designed for 6x2
vehicle configurations requiring reduced weight in a variety of heavy-
duty truck applications. Weighing in at only 255 lbs., the Dana Spicer®
tag axle features the same external geometry as a standard drive
axle to enable the use of conventional torque rod brackets and axle
seats that are compatible with air-ride suspension systems. This is
achieved without adding the complexity, cost, and weight associated
with common tag axle configurations.

  HIGH SPEED Gear & Sprocket
  Induction Heat Treating Machine
         • Capable of 1200 Parts Per Hour
         • Produces uniform hardened case
         • Select single of variable frequency output
         • Independent power control at each station
         • Programmed for selecting four different types of quench process
         • Capable of processing two different parts sizes during the same production cycle

This machine is a complete hardening and tempering system utilizing a dual heat
station and dial table and lift mechanism for high speed, precision heat treating.
Equipment features include auto load matching, high efficient output transformers,
quick change inductor mounting, and integral water cooling & quench recirculating
system. Designed for using our Accelerated Austenitizing™ process. Quenching
is achieved by mass (no quench medium), air, gas or by polymer liquid quench.
The machine is programmed to select individual heat and quench processing
parameters at each heat station for a specific part design.
For more information about this high speed machine
