Maitland Today

Maitland is a stunning blend of “funky heritage” and contemporary style, encapsulating the best
of the past and the present. The street scapes of Maitland and surrounds are lined with
historical buildings dating from the early 1800s, there are picturesque rural views from a
multitude of vantage points and a relaxed environment to enjoy. In stark contrast Maitland is
also host to an array of unique festivals such as the Bitter & Twisted Boutique Beer Festival,
Hunter Valley Steamfest, Tocal Field Days and the Maitland Garden Ramble to name a few.
Diverse range of guesthouses and accommodations, eateries, boutique shopping and
entertainment venues create a stylish heritage town.

Maitland Yesterday

The city of Maitland offers visitors an exciting opportunity to discover and experience the well
preserved historical beauty of the township. The area of Maitland was originally settled by
farmers from the early 1800s. The majority of Maitland, including its main avenue, High Street,
grew without apparent planning giving the town its great charm. The original bullock track
became fixed as the line of High Street with its delightful meandering curves which are still
evident today. Almost every turn within Maitland you come across an architectural delight with
a myriad of historic buildings giving the City its unique character. Landmark buildings erected
over 170 years ago stand alongside fine modern buildings, a harmonious mix of new and old.

The area has long been an industrious area and since the 1820s central Maitland has been home
to industry, trade and commerce. Its riverside location, stores and warehouses gave the settlers
many a task to undertake within the frontier town. Maitland was home to a wide range of
businesses, including flourmills, breweries, soap and candle making and salt stores. Iron workers,
blacksmiths and saddlers also thrived at this time. During the 1850s a series of riverside
merchants traded, most notably David Cohen & Co and Owen & Beckett, experiencing great
success. Interspersed within the retail area of central Maitland were a selection of services and
outlets such as tailors, hairdressers, wig makers, confectioners, photographers and dressmakers
who added to the sense of vitality and diversity within the area.

Each guest grabs a glass and is lead through the winery tasting
from stainless steel vats and should they choose to, spitting into
drains like the professionals do. Tasting different varieties, in different stages of production, this is very
informative and a great way to learn about wine and ask many questions of the winemakers. Who better
to explain a wine than the people who made it? The next stop is the barrel warehouse where different
reds are tasted straight from French oak barrels. Please contact the friendly staff at Hope Estate for more
tour and lunch options.
