SOUTH DAKOTA CORE CURRICULUM GUIDE
INTRODUCTION The South Dakota Core Curriculum Guide (CCG) is a dynamic document that provides the framework for employees’ training. High quality technical and support staffs will ensure that South Dakota NRCS remains the leader in providing conservation technical assistance to our customers. The CCG provides a list of the minimum required training for each employee, for each job position, series and grade. This guide is the main reference document for use in the Training Needs Inventory (TNI) process. Additional training needs may be identified by the employee and/or supervisor based on skill needs, job requirements and/or employee development goals. To participate in courses not listed in this document, an employee must work with their supervisor, Management Steering Team member, and/or the Training Officer to obtain the necessary training. Frequent and effective communication between the employee and the supervisor is essential to ensure that the training process is successful. Regular communication is required to identify training needs, to ensure that training has been received and is being utilized, and to assist the employee in working toward career goals. The CCG continues to be revised and updated in response to emerging technologies, training needs identified during discussions with employees, feedback from all employees and the quality assurance process. USING THE GUIDE 1. The CCG identifies all general minimum training requirements for all employees, as well as specific minimum training requirements for each job position, series and grade. 2. All employees will participate in the required basic training sessions as listed in the CCG in a timely manner. 3. The employee and supervisor will work together within the first three months of employment or transfer to develop the new employee’s Employee Development Plan (EDP), based on job position, grade, and responsibilities, past experience, past training and on future skill needs. 4. As part of the ongoing employee development process, training needs are identified by both the employee and the supervisor and are documented bi-annually (at a minimum) in the employees EDP and annually in the Training Needs Inventory. 5. Core Curriculum training needs which are provided by private vendors may be addressed by the supervisor working with the Training Officer to identify those training sources and coordinate the employee’s participation.
6. The employee and supervisor will review the employee’s EDP, training accomplishments and additional training needs at least twice per year. Prior to the employee’s performance review, a printout of the employee’s current agency training record will be generated and reviewed by the employee. The employee will also review the EDP prior to the performance review. 7. The employee will document training accomplishments on the EDP and ensure that it and the agency training record are current and accurate. 8. The supervisor will evaluate the employee’s performance to ensure that the training received has adequately addressed the training need and is being utilized by the employee. 9. The supervisor must ensure that an employee has completed all minimum training requirements of previous grades for their current job series and/or career path. 10. New supervisors, in all job series and grades, will include the “Supervising for Excellence” and any prerequisite courses in their EDP. 11. For “Self-paced” and “Web-based” courses that are not automatically assigned based on the grid on yellow "Automatic" tab, employees must register online in AgLearn. For “Classroom” courses and other workshops, course registration will be handled by Tony Doxtater, State Training Officer, or Vickie Blindauer, Human Resources Specialist. 12. Comments and suggestions for revision of the South Dakota Core Curriculum Guide are to be forwarded through your supervisor to Tony Doxtater, Training Officer.
