Wednesday Workshop Descriptions Max Cupcakes and Chocolate with Ayako Archer – Personal Chef: What better life long skill is there than to learn how to cook and then savour the fruits of your labour? Since childhood, Ayako has loved to bake and create delicious home-made treats. As a graduate of the Pacific Institute of the Culinary Arts in Vancouver, Ayako was able to learn firsthand many industry techniques. Currently she is a Personal Chef, preparing and cooking dinners to clients on a regular basis as well 25 as catering for special events. In the Cupcakes & Chocolate workshop, students will learn a no-fail recipe for chocolate cupcakes and how to decorate them using a pastry bag and tip. Students will also make hand-made truffles from French chocolate, decorating the chocolates with a variety of coatings. Sushi with John Rose: John Rose is a graduate of Vancouver Community Collage Culinary Arts Program. He has worked in various restaurants in Vancouver and a currently has a small catering business which specializes in events and parties in private homes. He also cooks the morning meal at a private boys school in 20 Vancouver. Within this 3.5 hour workshop he will be giving the students a hands on workshop on Sushi making. Types of foods to be covered would be nigiri-sushi, rolls, inside out rolls, sashimi, cones, garnishes, and dipping sauces. Italian Cooking with Adam Pegg: Adam Pegg is currently a Chef specializing in Italian Cuisine in Vancouver. His many experiences include working in Vancouver and Victoria as well as completing the Master’s of Italian Chef Program in Italy. Following his program in Italy, Mr. Pegg continued working in many Italian provinces in order to learn the typical Italian dishes and techniques. Mr. Pegg will be sharing his experiences in the fine art of Italian cooking with two groups of 18 students at his restaurant, La quercia. Students will create a three course meal within these 3 ½ hr. workshops. Some items on the menu are: Antipasti, hand made 18 pasta, pasta sauce and desert. Mr. Pegg will also encourage the students to taste some traditional Italian meats and cheeses. This workshop will be completely hands on as the students will create the meal themselves. Mr. Pegg has also volunteered to create an accompanying recipe booklet so the students can make these dishes at home. Oil Painting with Ann Goldberg: Do you aspire to be a great artist? Do you want to find a way to express yourself through art? Have you wondered where to start? Most great artists have amazing technical skills which they have acquired and honed through the practice of still life painting. Let’s take the first step together on your road to being a great artist. No experience is necessary – only the desire to learn (and practice) the art of still life oil painting. In this hands-on 3 ½ hour workshop, Ann will begin by covering some of the theory behind art and art appreciation. She will talk about perspective, color, mixing, lighting, materials and good 20 studio practice – things all artists must know. Ann will also demonstrate using examples from her own work and the work of others. Then will come the time for you to apply the concepts and skills you have learned by painting an image of your choice under Ann’s watchful eye in a relaxed, fun environment (bring your favorite music – She’ll bring some snacks!). Please bring a photo to paint - the color and composition should inspire you. 3 ½ hour workshops Pop-Surreal Art-Comic Book Illustrations with Camilla d'Errico: Camilla d'Errico is a Canadian visual artist based out of Vancouver, BC. She illustrates comic books and is also a painter. Her style is heavily influenced by manga and her use of bright colours and the ability to convey intense emotions is a hallmark of her work. Within this 3 ½ hr. workshop, Ms d’Errico will show some of her projects, and talk about her process when creating 25 comic book illustration. She will give everyone a copy of one of her scripts so that they can create characters for their own interpretation of her comic book. Advanced Improv with Suzanne Paquin: Be spontaneous, learn how to let go and be in the moment. Students will learn some basics of improv; listening, saying yes, being physical and thinking on their feet. We will go over improv terms and what they mean. Students will dabble in character development and scene work learning how to work as a team and make something from nothing. There is no way to fail, just remember to say yes. Suzanne Paquin studied improvisation 25 with Keith Johnstone and the Vancouver TheatreSports League. For the past 12 years she has been a professional improv teacher and performer. Through her skills as an actor and stand up comedienne, Suzanne gives a unique perspective on improvisation. Wood Turning 101: This is a hands-on woodturning workshop where students will each have use of their own wood lathe. Three expert instructors will direct students in turning and finishing a ‘Bonnie Klein’ styled toy top from a solid piece of maple. This is an introductory woodturning session for novice turners.Marco Berera, a Swiss pattern-maker, has won many awards with his unique entries for the Annual 2"X 4"X 8' contest and the Annual Vancouver Woodturning Competition. Marco has demonstrated woodturning in both the USA and Canada.Bruce Campbell has been woodturning recreationally since 1979 and 12 professionally since 2002. He has trained under the world reknowned turner Richard Raffin and is the past president of the Greater Vancouver Woodturners’ Guild (GVWG).Ted Fromson is a past executive of the GVWG and he hand-crafts woodturning projects for his company ‘Fancy Firewood.’ He has attended and presented at many woodturning seminars and is also involved with both the Pacific Woodworkers’ Guild, and the Richmond Carvers’ Show. Glass Fusing with Jeremy Dane Morris: Glass Fusing is a very popular art form, where specialized fusing glass is cut to shape using glass cutters, mosaic cutters and glass grinders. Glass is stacked in varying heights, accessory products such as confetti, noodles, stringers and rods are used to add detail and then the project is placed in a glass kiln and "fired" at temperatures up to 1465 degrees Fahrenheit. The results are amazing. The glass melts together, creating a flat and fantastic art piece. Jeremy Dane Morris is 15 a glass artist that sells through galleries in Vancouver. Pilates with Susan Campbell- Susan’s lifelong dedication to health and fitness has led her to her path of helping others achieve optimal health and fitness through teaching Pilates and Yoga. In this workshop you will learn the five principles of Pilates, and the exercises of the Essential Series. Pilates will: Increase strength, 75 flexibility, balance and coordination, improve posture and confidence, improve your sports (hockey, dance, and basketball), Develop long, lean muscles, strengthen your core muscles and invigorate the mind and elevate the spirit. Classes will be highly physical and students are asked to dress in gym strip . Flamenco Dance with Alice Gerbrecht: Introduce yourself to the art of flamenco, the percussive gypsy dance form from southern Spain. Taught by Alice Gerbrecht DeNofrio, professional dancer and graduate of Boston Ballet Centre for Dance Education, students will learn the flamenco basics of palmas (clapping), brazos (arms), and zapateados (rhythmic footwork). They will then join together in "Sevillanas", the popular dance for couples performed at ferias (festivals) 105 throughout Andalucía. An acclaimed dancer and choreographer of ballet, flamenco, and modern dance, Alice DeNofrio has worked with professional dance 1 hour and 10 minute workshops-pick 3 companies across North America. Currently she is director of the dance department at Vancouver Academy of Music and performs and teaches for Flamenco Rosario/Centro Flamenco. Classes will be highly physical and students are asked to dress in gym strip Flash Mob Dance with Melissa Moti: Melissa has been a professional performer and teacher of dance for the past 12 years. Her individuality and contemporary style has put her in demand as a choreographer, master teacher, dancer and aerialist.She has been featured in videos for Prince, Mandy Moore, Dream, Mayte, Buster Poindexter and Secret Weapon. Melissa has performed on stage for Will Smith, Il Circo, Mirage Casino and Belagio Casino in Las Vegas, NIKE, Sketchers, Clothestime, Jetta, and Sebastian.Her television and film appearances include; The Young and the Restless, Fame LA, Suddenly Susan, The Steve Harvey Show, 150 A Time For Dancing, and Can't Hardly Wait. Currently Melissa is instructing master classes and choreographing and performing Internationally. Within this workshop, students will learn some of Michael Jackson’s moves to the song Beat It as part of a world-wide Flash Mob homage to the late pop artist. Stage Combat with Derek:The training is designed to develop a heightened physical and mental presence in the actor through play based exercises. The workshop will include basic acrobatics, impulse exercises and lots of games to get the body and brain moving. Classes will be highly physical and students are asked to dress in gym strip . 75 Sangha Music with Neel Dhillon and Gordon Grdina: Rooted in the traditions of Arabic, Persian and Indian music, this ensemble forges a new path by combining these elements of original compositions. With traditions this varied a mixture of styles is inevitable, so the the musicians focus on creating music in the moment, allowing for the varied influences to blend together naturally without being forced or diluted. Within this workshop students will be exposed to the elements 75 of Arabic and Indian music and will experience the extraordinary intricacies of melody and rhythm that these music cultures employ. Neel Dhillon - tabla, Gordon Grdina - oud. "Cory Weeds - Jazz Combo Our guest is a prominent Vancouver saxophonist who will perform with his combo, and share his passion for playing jazz with you. Mr. Weeds is also the owner of The Cellar jazz club just down the street from WPGA, 75 so come and hear a sampling of what you might experience at The Cellar!" Special Effects Make-Up for Film and Television with Tracy Lai:Tracy Lai is a Vancouver-based make-up artist who serves in the motion picture industry. Her 75 passion for gore keeps her working on many horror films, creating injuries, making dead bodies and designing creatures. Photoshoots, music videos and weddings also keep her busy. She is also an instructor at the John Casablancas Institute, where she teaches make-up for film and television and special effects. This workshop is for those who are interested in learning about make-up artistry in the movie industry. Participants will also have the opportunity to be hands-on in creating, crafting and applying different types of artificial injuries.
