Komatsu launches the new PC228USLC-8 crawler excavator
Vilvoorde, November 2010 - . The PC288USLC-8 is Komatsu's latest addition to their
wide range of successful crawler excavators, and it fits right into the world-renowned
'Dash 8' line-up. This ultra short tail swing machine includes new fuel-saving technology,
and a new ROPS certified cab for extra safety and more operator comfort. All major
components of the PC228USLC-8 are designed and directly manufactured by Komatsu,
with essential machine functions perfectly matched to make it a highly reliable and
productive excavator. It is currently available to order on the European market.
The rounded profile on the PC228USLC-8, and its ultra short tail swing radius, with
minimal protrusions at both the front and the rear, is perfect for work in tight spaces,
particularly in urban areas, for road construction, or for logging and demolition. The
PC228USLC-8 has a high lifting capacity, and is exceptionally stable thanks to an
optimised packaging. Coupled with a wide working range, this stability is ideal for work
requiring long reach, such as demolition jobs and slope cutting. It also has ample
dumping reach for loading. A PC228USLC-8 operator can work easily, efficiently and
with absolute confidence.
A Komatsu SAA6D107E-1 engine provides high torque, a better performance at low
speed, and low fuel consumption. This ecot3 engine features a new combustion chamber
design with optimised ignition and combustion timing. The operating pressure of the
common rail system was increased for improved injection and fuel efficiency, and the air-
to-air charge cooler reduces the temperature of the compressed air supplied by the turbo
charger to the 6 cylinders, also minimizing fuel consumption.
Further fuel saving technology includes a new control for the engine’s hydraulic pump
that automatically matches engine speed to the pump’s demand. The size of the piping on
the bottom side of the bucket cylinder has been increased to offer less resistance to oil
flow, thus reducing loss of hydraulic pressure. The auto-deceleration speed of the engine
is the same as the low idle speed, and an idling caution indicator is displayed if the engine
idles for more than 5 minutes.
The PC228USLC-8 features 5 selectable working modes to optimise productivity,
performance and fuel usage. The Economy mode can be fine-tuned for an ideal balance
between power and economy, flawlessly matching the work at hand. The oil flow rate to
hydraulic attachments can be adjusted directly on the monitor panel.
The newly designed ROPS compliant cab is wide and spacious, with a comfortable air
suspension seat and a reclining backrest. An automatic air conditioner, an air filter, and a
positive internal air pressure of 60 Pa prevent entrance of external dust. Sliding
proportional controls and a pedal are fitted as standard for precise operation of
The high shock absorbency of the cab's tubular steel frame improves resistance and
durability while providing better visibility of the work area. Vibration levels for the
PC228USLC-8 operator are impressively reduced by the machine’s built-in stability
combined with a highly rigid deck and a sprung multi-layer viscous mount system. Large
mirrors on either side of the cab ensure that visibility meets the latest ISO standards, and
a factory-fitted camera gives an exceptionally clear view of the rear work zone on a wide
This class leading monitor enables safe, accurate and smooth work with its highly
intuitive user interface for the machine's Equipment Management and Monitoring System
(EMMS). User-friendly, multilingual, and with all essential information available at a
glance, the monitor features simple and easy-to-operate switches and multifunction keys
that provide fingertip access to a wide range of functions and operating information.
Komatsu Dash 8 crawler excavators are known to have the lowest in-class external noise
levels. In fact, using a reduced fan speed, a large capacity radiator, optimal sound
insulation and sound absorbing materials, the noise levels inside Dash 8 excavators can
be compared to those inside an executive car.
The latest version of KOMTRAX™, Komatsu’s exclusive satellite-based machine
management and monitoring system, is factory fitted on all PC228USLC-8 machines.
Machine data, including working time, workload and fuel consumption, are easily
accessible over the internet. KOMTRAX™ can be configured to send an email to a
designated person, if for example the machine displays a caution alert or if it is activated
outside an engine lock period. Without having to attend the site in person, owners or fleet
managers are informed directly of the machine’s operational status.
