                                                                                 SEDGEHILL STUDENTS MEET THE BELLINGHAM GOLDEN OLDIES
ART                                                                              On Wednesday 13th October Sedgehill students and the Bellingham
                                                                                 Golden Oldies spent the afternoon together at Bellingham Leisure Centre
                                                                                 creating artwork. The workshop was led by Wayne Lucas, Sedgehill’s
                                                                                 Artist in Residence, who helped the students run the art session. Working
                                                                                 side by side they created cards for the then fast-approaching Christmas
                                                                                 season. This is just the start of an inter-generational project as the
                                                                                 Bellingham Golden Oldies have been invited to visit Sedgehill School, to
                                                                                 help paint the set for the school’s production of Oliver, to which the local
                                                                                 community will be invited in March 2011.

                                                                                  ELEVATING SUCCESS DRAMA WORKSHOPS
                                                                                  In September 2010 a selected group of year seven and
                                                                                  year eight’s took part in a series of drama workshops run by
                                                                                  Drama Facilitator, Lisa Harmer, from Elevating Success. The
                                                                                  project was set up through the Arts Council’s,
                                                                                  ‘Be Creative, Be Well’ scheme, based in Bellingham.

                                                                                  On Monday 8th November 2011 the group performed a
                                                                                  short, student led performance called ‘Fork in the Road’            SEDGEHILL SCHOOL PRESENTS...
                                                                                  exploring different scenarios and choices related to health
                                                                                  and the arts.

                                                                                  Sedgehill student Sedanur Gurbuz talked about the project
                                                                                  saying, “I improved so much in my drama and it’s all thanks
                                                                                  to the Elevating Success Drama Group. I used to be a shy
                                                                                  person, but now I have more confidence to perform on the
                                                                                  stage. Drama is a fun activity and I think everyone should
                                                                                  participate. You can make loads of friends and have fun but
                                                                                  the most important thing for me is letting my imagination run
                                                                                  wild and being more creative. Everyone has really enjoyed
                                                                                  these workshops and we all wish we could do it again.

                                                                                  SOUND AND MUSIC COLLECTIVE WITH TRINITY MUSICIANS
MUSIC                                                                             Sound and Music collective are due to complete a six week workshop with our
                                                                                  year nine option students. Our students have been composing a piece of
                                                                                  music for professional musicians from Trinity College London to perform.

                                                                                  Trinity College is one of the world’s leading music colleges and our students
                                                                                  are composing for these musicians. They are also working with a singer who
                                                                                  is leading the project - Kerry Andrew. Kerry has also done a lot of session
                                                                                  work musically and is one of London’s most in demand singers. She is currently
                                                                                  working at the Handel House Museum in Mayfair in London. Our students have
                                                                                  been working on this project with orchestral players who play Violin, Cello,
                                                                                  Oboe, Trumpet and Flute. The musicians will perform the piece to a selected
                                                                                  year seven class.

                                                                                  The students were also interviewed for a website and all of the work will be
                                                                                  put onto a DVD. Their work can be viewed at in the
                                                                                  next few weeks.

                                                                                                                                                     NEWS FROM THE RECORDING STUDIO

                                                                                                                                                     Last term was an amazing time for music at
                                                                                                                                                     Sedgehill. After being together for only ten

                                                                                                                                                     a truly memorable day and Vocalize’s
                                                                                                                                                     performance stole the show. I’d like to thank
                                                                                                                                                     the group for all their hard work and
                                                                                                                                                     dedication and I hope we have another
                                                                                                                                                     great year this year.

                                                                                                                                                     We also have had exciting news about some
                                                                                                                                                     of our students who auditioned in front of a
                                                                                                                                                     music industry management company last
                                                                                                                                                     December. The company were so ‘blown
                                                                                                                                                     away ‘ with the talent they saw at Sedgehill
                                                                                                                                                     they have offered to come into school and
                                                                                                                                                     help set up our own record label! They have
                                                                                                                                                     offered a contract to Amy Kabba who will
                                                                                                                                                     now be guided and looked after by them in
                                                                                                                                                     her pop career.

                                                                                                                                                     Another ex-student Tyrone Wallace is now
                                                                                                                                                     attracting interest from various people in the
                                                                                                                                                     music industry due to the quality of his music.

PERFORMANCES                                                                                                                                               As December approached Sedgehill got
                                                                                                                                                           ready to celebrate with the annual
                                                                                                                                                           seasonal variety show,‘Winter
                                                                                                                                                           Wonderland’, on the 16th and 17th of
                                                                                                                                                           December. In amongst all the snow students
                                                                                                                                                           spent months rehearsing in preparation for
                                                                                                                                                           a spectacular end of year performance.
                                                                                                                                                           The whole school came together to watch
                                                                                                                                                           an array of talents from poetry and live
                                                                                                                                                           music to drum battles. A special well done
                                                                                                                                                           to all those in year seven who conquered
                                                                                                                                                           their nerves, took the plunge and amazed
                                                                                                                                                           the audience with duets, X-Factor styled
                                                                                                                                                           solos and original songs. A huge
                                                                                                                                                           congratulations to all students involved and
                                                                                                                                                           to Ms Salmon who once again put together
                                                                                                                                                           a fantastic show full of Sedgehill talent.
                                                                                   CHEQUE FOR ST. CHRISTOPHER’S

                                                                                   Sedgehill students raised £300 at ‘Tropicana’ performance event and on Tuesday
                                                                                   5th October 2010 they visited St. Christopher’s Hospice in Sydenham to present the

                                                                                   Deputy Headteacher. Mr Banks said ‘Like many schools Sedgehill is very keen to
                                                                                   give something back to the community so this was a good opportunity for students to
                                                                                   contribute to what is a wonderful local hospice’. Richie said ‘I was really pleased to
                                                                                   be able to visit the hospice where my grandma had been looked after before she
                                                                                   died and I know the money is going to a really good cause’.
                                                                                                                                      SEDGEHILL CHRISTMAS CONCERT

                                                                                                                                       The Sedgehill Christmas Concert was all raring to go before
                                                                                                                                       the snow arrived early and it had to be cancelled to avoid
                                                                                                                                       everyone being snowed-in! This didn’t stop the vibrant music
                                                                                                                                       department rescheduling the event for Wednesday 15th
                                                                                                                                       December 2010 to make sure staff, students and parents were
                                                                                                                                       full of the Christmas spirit just before the end of term. Students
                                                                                                                                       wowed the audience with a wide range of performances
                                                                                                                                       including guitar ensembles, choir performances and of course
                                                                                                                                       the Sedgehill Concert Band.

                                                                                                                                       Over £400 was raised from ticket sales, a raffle and
                                                                                                                                       Vocalize CD sales. All proceeds will go towards the School
                                                                                                                                       Music Department in order to fund trips and purchase new
                                                                                                                                       instruments. Well done to all those students involved and
                                                                                                                                       congratulations to the Music Department for putting together
                                                                                                                                       such an enjoyable evening.
