ECONOMY
 COPY:
 In the 1840’s the northern US economy
  relied on manufacturing and commerce, and
  the southern US economy relied on
  agriculture and slave labor.
 DO:
  Look at the map on page A4-5. Sketch and
  divide the nation into North and South.
    STATE OR REPUBLIC
 COPY:
 Some people in the US believed in manifest
  destiny. This is the belief that the US was
  meant to spread across North America. Others
  believed that annexing Texas would spark a
  war with Mexico and they did not want to add
  another slave state.
 DO:
 If you lived in the US during this time would
  you want to annex Texas? Why or why not?
    ANNEXATION
 COPY:
 Political parties helped James K. Polk get
  elected as US president in 1844. In 1845 the
  joint resolution allowing Texas to be annexed
  was passed.
 DO:
 Look at page 317, 1st paragraph. What were
  some of the terms of the joint resolution?
CONVENTION OF 1845
 COPY:
 Texans like Jose Antonio Navarro met at
  the Convention of 1845 in Austin to discuss
  annexation. On Dec. 29, 1845 President
  Polk signed the Texas Admissions Act
  making Texas a state.
 DO:
 Draw the US flag as it looked in 1845 when
  Texas became a state.
GOVERNMENT
 The Texas constitution of 1845 was
  modeled after the US, the Republic’s, and
  LA constitution. It banned banks and set up
  3 branches of Government. James Pinckney
  Henderson became the first Governor.
 DO:
 Name the three branched of Government
  (look at the content poster on the wall)
