                                      ALL AGE GROUPS

   Each player shall play for 50% of the time he/she is at each game. This does not mean if a
    player plays 100% of one game, he can sit out an entire game the next time. Additionally, if a
    player is only at half the game, he/she only is required to play one quarter of the game. Further,
    playing time shall not be a reward and lack of playing time shall not be a punishment. NO
    EXCUSES other than injury or illness. Inform officials and opposing coach if a player will not be
    playing or will play less than 50% due to physical condition.
   All coaches must wear their ID card and lanyard on the sidelines at every game.
        o U4-U8, U9Girls: Maximum of two coaches per team allowed on the players’
            sideline during a game.
        o U9 Boys, U10-U19: Maximum of three coaches per team allowed on the players’
            sideline during a game. Coaches must have the coach’s ID card displayed or
            they will be suspended for the next game by NMCSL officials.
   Keep your signed roster, medical releases, and Parents’ Code of Conduct forms with you at all
    practices and games.
   If you are unable to field a team for a scheduled game, please contact the Scheduler for your
    Age Group and your Age Group Commissioner so that they may notify the other coach and the
    referee assignor.
   Utilize your parents! Designate a team parent to handle snacks, calls, and other misc. help.
    Designate an assistant coach to help with scheduling conflicts, trips, practices, games, etc.
   Practice / Field Space must be reserved through the Field Commissioners no earlier than the
    Coach’s Meeting. You can send a team representative if you are unable to attend the meeting.

   Thank you for taking the time to volunteer and welcome to the GSSA Mini-Jogo program. Our
program focuses on small sided soccer, keeping it fun, and includes tons of touches for each player.
Mini-Jogo takes place in a controlled environment and utilizes a super session type format that will
provide both coach and parent the day’s training exercise.
    No practice times/space are required, however you may choose to practice. That is entirely up
       to you. We combine practice and games into one Saturday session. Each session will combine
       a 30 minute skills session led by a GSSC Competitive Coach, followed immediately by 30
       minutes of 3V3 games.
    Once you receive your roster, please contact all your players within 48 hours if at all possible.
       If you have problems contacting anyone, let me know.
    I always recommend a small get together at a park, pizza parlor or the like to introduce
       yourself to your players and parents and to hand out your uniforms. Don’t wait till the last
       minute, we don’t want players changing in the parking lot.
    Keep in touch with your parents about games and other info, email is best.
    Let your parents know of your plans to practice (if you are) and take a vote on time/place.
       Remember it is not required to practice.
    Games will be at Bob Jones Park in Southlake this season. The layout of the fields is
       underway, but it will be right in front of the concession stand. Games are at 9 am for U4 and
       10:30 & 12 for U5. Have your kids arrive 10-15 minutes early as we start promptly.
    Uniforms are provided (jersey/shorts/socks) Shin guards are mandatory and cleats are
       preferred. No jewelry is allowed at all (no tape over earrings)
    Players will need a size 3 ball for each practice/game session.
    No games will be rescheduled, except for rainouts if possible.
    You must wear your Coaches Card at all times on the field. If you do not have it with you, you
       will not be allowed to coach. Don’t ask for tolerance.
    Find an assistant coach to help you. If you have to miss, they can take the team. Moms and
       dads equally make good helpers. We will involve all the parents, grand parents and family
       members each week.
    If you wish to take coaching clinics, GSSA will reimburse for the courses only, no travel
       expenses. Let me know if you are interested and I will help you find courses.
                                    U6 SPECIFIC INFORMATION

      Have a Parent/Coaches meeting before the season starts to review expectations. At a minimum,
       remind experienced parents and advise the new parents of the mandatory shin guards and water
       for all games and practices requirement.

      Uniforms (same color shirts, black shorts, and socks) will be provided to new players added to a
       team. If you wish to purchase matching uniforms for new players yourself, we will reimburse up
       to $18 per kit (jersey, short, socks). Just provide a copy of your receipt to the office.

      There are no goalies at U6. Defenders are allowed, but no hands are allowed, and defenders
       should be encouraged to get into the whole game and not camp out in front of the goal.

      Spirit of the game: Cherry picking - the idea is to learn how to play and be involved in the game. It
       should not just be about scoring. Try to encourage good sportsmanship by not allowing the
       players to run up the score in a lopsided game. Again, get the defenders involved in the game,
       not just camping out!

Team Practices
 Coaches should arrive at practice early to set up the field. Think about the areas in which the kids
   need practice (dribbling, passing, kicking, throw-ins, acting like a team) and plan to work on those.
 Bring cones, extra #3 balls, colored shirts or bibs (pennies) for scrimmaging, water, coaching ID, first
   aid kit, cell phone and parents’ phone numbers.
 Make sure players have shin guards, socks or pants covering shin guards, soccer shoes or tennis
   shoes, a #3 ball, and water at each practice. If there is a child whose financial situation does not
   allow him/her to have his/her own ball, please contact the GSSA Administrator or the U6
   Commissioner. We will make arrangements to get a ball for that player. (It may not be brand new, but
   it will be gently used and in good shape.)

      Submit game reports after each game. This helps us grade the referees and let us know of
       any concerns or issues. Including whether the game started on time and quarters, halves or
       half-times were the correct length.

      Take the time to get your coaching certificates and plan your practices in advance. You will be
       more efficient and effective if you know what areas you would like to work on.

      Don’t be afraid to ask for help! There are plenty of seasoned coaches / adult players willing to
       assist with problem areas (bunching up, not passing, etc.)

As of the coach’s meeting, the rosters will be considered FINAL unless I made a mistake placing a
child that played for you last season. No other requests will be honored as we have very full rosters
this season. A child playing on your indoor team is not considered to be a returning player for
outdoor.

From my experiences last season, I need to ask of all coaches:
    Keep the scores close. The number one complaint to me and GSSA is about coaches running
     up the scores. There is no excuse in my book, so please keep the game fun for all kids: yours
     and your opponents.
    Keep it fun at practices and games for your own kids. Number two on my hit parade last
     season is fielding complaints from parents about coaches yelling at their kids and running
     punishment drills. This is RECREATIONAL soccer, so keep it upbeat and fun.
    Please fill out your game reports completely. I received numerous reports with just the score
     and maybe one team’s name, and no indication as to who won. Game reports can be found
     on the GSSA website under Forms / NMCSL Forms. They must CLEARLY indicate the
     winning team and score. No goal differential over 5 will be posted. The winning team’s score
     will be adjusted downward to no more than a five goal win. Therefore, there is no incentive to
     win by more than 5.

I want you all to realize how much I and GSSA, the parents and kids appreciate your time and efforts.
For the most part, the corrections we need to make during the season are minor, and I have the
utmost faith in all of you to treat these kids like they were your own. At the end of the day, your only
measure of success should be how many kids come back.

The U9 & U10 Boys and Girls will be playing in the Northern Mid-Cities Soccer League (NMCSL).
For coaches that have not played games away from GSSA before, be aware that different
associations have different rules about players vs. parent’s sidelines. Some have the team and
parents on the same side of the field, while others are like GSSA and have players on one and
parents on the other. Good luck this season, I think it is very exciting to be playing new teams and
new levels of competition.
                                  U11+ SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Fall season will consist of 10 games beginning August 28th and playing through early November.
Schedules will be posted as soon as they are available and a link to the NMCSL information will be
posted on the GSSA website.

Coaches must display their coach’s id card at all games – similar to the policy GSSA. Those without
id’s present and displayed will be asked to leave if there are multiple coaches and the coach will be
suspended for the next game by NMCSL officials. You also must have a signed copy of your team
roster and medical releases at practice and games.

As a reminder: This is a recreational soccer league. ALL PLAYERS MUST PLAY 50% OF THE
TIME. NO EXCUSES, regardless of whether or not they make it to practice.

There is no excuse for coaches, parents, or players to scream, show disrespect or criticize players,
opponents or referees. But there is every reason to have fun. This applies to the kids and the
parents.

                         GAME REPORT PROCESS U7-U8 Teams

   Game Report forms can be found at www.GSSAsoccer.org / Forms / U7-U8 Game reports.
   No scores should be recorded.
   List all of your players and their jersey #’s on the game report.
   Make ten copies for the season
   Fill in specific game information on this week’s report.
   Fill in Game number from your schedule (if applicable).
   Make sure the Referee & Linesmen sign your game report after the game.
   Fill out referee evaluation & note any problems that may have occurred during or after the
    game on the back. Please email the Coaches Commissioner with further details within 72
    hours.
   Return game report to GSSA office within 72 hours of game time by fax, email, or through the
    mail slot in the office door.
   Age Group Commissioners will review them on Wednesday.
                               GAME REPORT PROCESS U9+ Teams

The NMCSL Game Report and the Misconduct forms are available on the forms page of the GSSA
website. All NMCSL teams are to show up at the game with both the forms. The misconduct form is
kept by the referee in the event of a card being given. The game report is returned to the coach after
the game. The coach will turn the game report in to the GSSA office.

The reports need to be faxed, scanned/emailed, put through the office mail slot, or even snail-mailed
ASAP after the game so any infractions are kept track of.

Scores are reported via telephone by both coaches within 48 hours. The PIN is 4625 (or GOAL) on
the phone keypad. The instructions are from the link under the schedule tab of our website
http://gssa.sportslink.ws/.


                                   U9+ TEAM POINTS AWARDED

We are using the Northern Mid-Cities Soccer Leauge (NMCSL) Point System to calculate team
standings:
       WIN         6 points
       TIE         3 points
       LOSS        0 points
       FORFEIT     9 points
       GOALS       1 point for each goal scored up to a max of 3 goals per game.
                   (So there is no benefit to running up the score.)

CLARIFICATION FOR COACHES: If you lose a game but have scored goals, you will receive points,
up to a maximum of 3 goals per game. For example, if a team loses by a score of 4 to 3, the winning
team will receive 9 points. The losing team will receive 3 points. In keeping with the spirit of the
game, if a team is ahead by 5 goals, they are strongly recommended to stop scoring and
change the attention of the team to passing, using the opposite/weaker foot, etc.


                                 GSSA TIE BREAKING GUIDELINES
                                        FOR U9 AND U10

The following guidelines will be followed in case of a tie in the standings at the end of the season.
   1. Head to head results.
   2. Most number of team points against common opponents (NOT # of goals)
   3. Fewest number of team caution points.
   4. Fewest number of team Administrative points.

If, after the above procedures are followed, there is still a tie, Co-Champions or Co-Runners-up will
be declared. If a tie needs to be broken to determine to goes to the Tournament of Champions (TOC)
or for division placement, a one game playoff will be scheduled if needed.

―Goals Against‖ common opponent is NOT a tie breaker in league play. Administrative points are
kept separately and do NOT affect team points.

                      PLAYER/COACH MATCH SIT-OUT VERIFICATION

As per NTSSA Rule 3.11.2.2, 3.11.2.3, and 3.11.3.9, any player/coach receiving a send-off (Red
Card) must sit out the next scheduled game that the player’s team is involved in. In order to verify
that the offending player/coach serves his/her game suspension, this form must be completed by the
coach, assistant coach, or team manager and the referee must sign off on the fact that the
player/coach did not participate. The player/coach receiving send-off must then submit this report to
the tournament headquarters and/or team’s playing league.

                        SCHEDULING FACTS, RULES AND GUIDELINES

     Schedules will be available on the GSSA website (www.gssasoccer.org).
     DO NOT CONSIDER THEM FINAL until you receive an email stating ―FINAL SCHEDULES‖
      and/or there is a message on the site saying they’re final.
     Coaches and parents are responsible for having the correct schedule and there will be NO
      RESCHEDULES because a temporary schedule was used instead of a final one.
U4 – U8 Teams
     Evening games for U7 through U8 will begin at 6:00pm with the second game at 7:00 p.m.
      Second games for U9 through U10 will begin at 7:15 p.m.
     All rained out GSSA-controlled games (U4 – U10) will be rescheduled and posted on the web
      site within one week. It is the responsibility of each coach to know about the changes and to
      notify his team.
     Rescheduling Games
         o Deadline to notify scheduler of school and coaching conflicts is February 10th for U9 &
           U10 teams, February 17th for U4-U8 teams. No Games will be rescheduled after this
           date.
         o School conflicts will be handled to the best of our abilities.
         o Games that conflict with scheduled school events are defined as those that will leave
           you less than the minimum number of players required to start a game (U9 and up
           only).
         o Rescheduling depends on field and referee availability.
         o All rescheduling requests should be emailed to the scheduler and your age group
           commissioner. It is your responsibility to follow up on your request. Emails should
           contain age group involved, both team names, and field name.
         o Coaching Conflicts: If you coach a U11+ team, both schedulers must be notified


U9+ Teams
     Schedules for U9 + will be available via a link on the GSSA Website to the Northern Mid-Cities
      Soccer League (NMCSL).
     Schedules are not final until posted as final by NMCSL, not GSSA.
     U11+ has 9 weeks to play 10 games. The season begins August 28th.
     All teams will play at least one game on consecutive weekend days or during the week (more
      if you have a ―bye‖ week due to an official school event).
     Weeknight evening games for U11+ will begin at 6:30pm with second games at 8:00pm.
      Sunday games will begin after 12:30pm.
     Rainout make-ups will be posted within 72 hours.
      Rescheduling Games:
          o School conflicts may be considered for rescheduling purposes.
          o Games that conflict with scheduled school events are defined as those that will leave
            you less than the minimum number of players required to start a game. Do not ask to
            reschedule a game when you have the minimum number of players.
          o Each team is allowed one reschedule per season (assuming all criteria are met).
          o Rescheduling games depend on field and referee availability.
          o All rescheduling requests should be emailed to Rick Borkowski - U11+ Age Group
            Commissioner and Bob McMillan – U9+ Scheduler. It is your responsibility to follow up
            your request.
          o Coaching Conflicts: if you have U10 or younger teams, both schedulers must be
            emailed.


                        RAIN OUT / INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION

Games will be cancelled or rescheduled, as appropriate, in the event of lightning, rain, or unsafe or
unplayable field conditions. The decision to cancel or reschedule games will be made 1 ½ hours prior to
the first game time. Referees can also make the determination based on field conditions to close a field.
Please encourage parents of your players to use the website or to wait for a call from you so that the
hotline is not overburdened with calls during peak usage times. All coaches will be trying to get the same
info to their teams during the same time frame and we appreciate any efforts you can make to keep this
process moving.

                            LIGHTNING DETECTION / WARNING SYSTEM

Lightning Detection/Warning systems are installed at Meadowmere Soccer Complex in Grapevine
and Bob Jones Park in Southlake.

Oak Grove and Meadowmere: When conditions are prevalent for a Red Alert hazard, a horn will
sound and the strobe light will turn on and stay on. All players, coaches, spectators, and officials
must leave the field for the safety of their vehicles. Upon returning to a safe environment, the All
Clear signal will sound; 5 seconds on 2 seconds off, repeated 2 more times for a total of 3 blasts.
The strobe light will turn off. Once the All Clear is given, it is safe to return to the athletic fields.

Bob Jones: The siren will sound and the strobe light will come on. All players, coaches, spectators,
and officials must leave the field for the safety of their vehicles. When the detector has determined
that the danger has passed, the strobe light will turn off. It is then safe to return to the fields.




                           LIGHTS AT OAK GROVE AND MEADOWMERE
Most of the center referees understand the procedure to operate the lights at Oak Grove and
Meadowmere. However, occasionally a referee may be assigned that is unaware of this procedure.
Please confirm BEFORE you begin your game that the referee knows how to operate the lights. If
not, you should use the list of individuals below to contact someone that can walk the referee through
the procedure:

The center referee, as the official GSSA representative, should be given the instructions to operate

We have developed these objectives with guidelines set up by the NTSSA to help meet our children’s
physical & psychological developmental needs.

U4 & U5 – Soccer Basics
    Have FUN! Mini-Jogo Program with a controlled introduction to playing soccer
    3 vs. 3 format to maximize everyone’s touches of the ball
    Learn soccer basics (e.g., proper dribbling techniques, finishing, beginning foot skills)

U6 – Soccer Basics II
    Emphasis is still on having fun at all times!
    Introduction to Referees & Minimal rules
    Continuation of the fundamentals of kicking & chasing
    Introduction to sharing the ball with teammates (passing the ball is a tough concept to grasp &
      hard to achieve at 6 years old, they’re still pretty ―self‖ centered)
    Introduction of Goal kicks, Throw-ins, and Indirect Free kicks.

U7 & U8 Soccer Basics III
    Have fun!
    Learn more of the basic soccer fundamentals and new rules:
      -    Introduction of ―positional play‖ & ―using‖ teammates

                              COACHING -- PLANNING FOR THE SEASON

Why Plan?
Coaches agree that teaching skills, rules, and strategies of soccer are among their primary responsibilities. Most
coaches would also agree that improving the physical condition of the players, promoting enjoyment of the
game, teaching good sportsmanship, and injury prevention are also outcomes they wish to achieve. Many
coaches, however, fail to recognize the importance of planning to accomplish these goals. Organized practices
are vital to maximizing the benefits of soccer. Disorganized practices often result in players failing to obtain
desired skills, knowledge, fitness, good attitudes, and contribute to injuries and inappropriate skills. Organizing
your season and planning your practices prior to going on the field can result in the following benefits.
 effective use of limited practice time
 choosing season objectives based on team needs
 appropriate sequence of season objectives
 focus and direct practice activities
 enhanced preparation of the team for competition
 easier adjustments in practice objectives
 deterrent to lawsuits involving coaches’ liability

DEVELOPING A SEASON PLAN
Use these three steps to develop a season plan:
   1. Identify the goals and objectives of the season (i.e. skills, strategy, knowledge, fitness, personal and
       social) appropriate for the age and ability of your team.
   2. Sequence the season objectives into the pre-, early, mid, and late portions of the season.
   3. Identify practice objectives. Select, teach, and practice the key areas that are essential to your team.


ROLE OF THE COACH
The two most important decisions in planning for the season are deciding what objectives to teach and how
much time you should spend teaching them. You will spend less total time planning for your season and
practice if you use the approach suggested here than if the task is done practice by practice. This process will
also help you verify which topics you believe are most important. In addition to the good feeling and
confidence that comes with completing a season calendar, you will have developed the base necessary to
systematically change your plans as unexpected events develop. A completed plan that has been implemented
and refined is also an invaluable resource for next year’s coaching assignment.

FAIL TO PREPARE, PREPARE TO FAIL
Your role as a coach can be best filled through the leadership and instruction you provide in practice and game
situations. Clearly, those coaches who are most effective in helping their players acquire the necessary physical
skills, knowledge, fitness, personal and social skills are those who have clear objectives and who organize to
achieve them. Planning for the upcoming season is a major step towards helping players acquire the benefits of
soccer.

Parent/Coach Meeting
Whether you are a new coach or a returning coach, it is advisable to hold a parent meeting prior to
the start of the season. The meeting should cover the following items:

Introductions
     Coach / Assistant Coach (soccer & coaching experience, etc.)
     Parents

What you hope to accomplish this season
   Kids – fun, basic skills, fitness, etc.
   Coach – fun, recruiting an assistant, coaching soccer clinics, etc.

Player’s responsibilities
    Get players to practice and games at agreed time
    Equipment – remind players of equipment needs
    Be supportive of their children and the team
    Do not yell at any player, coach, referee or a parent from another team
    De-emphasize winning/losing aspects
    Have a good attitude towards the game
    Assistance in getting the child to train on his own at home (basic skills)
    Assistance with the phone chain for communication and email addresses
    Provide refreshment, equipment set up and tear down (ice for refreshments can be used for
      potential injuries)
    Assistance in getting medical attention

Game and Training schedules
   Coach to set time and location for practice
   Game schedule (check website www.gssasoccer.org )
   Arrive early to game and practice (15 minutes prior)
   Changes in practice or game times should be communicated by the coach (give adequate
     notice)

First Aid, Health and Safety
    Prevention of injuries is our first concern. The goal is to make sure all children are in good
       physical condition prior to the beginning of the season and each time they enter the practice or
       game field. Annual check-ups, proper nutrition and hydration are all needs of the sport. Each
       team should have a first aid kit, plastic bags or towels and ice available at each game.
    RICE = Rest, Ice, Compress and Elevate
                               GSSA Snacks after games
             1 child in 4 is obese.
             Nearly 50% of obese adolescents remain obese as adults.
             In the last 20 years, Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has increased 10 fold.
             By the age of 12, an estimated 70% of our children have developed the beginning stages
              of hardening of the arteries.
             Sugar consumption has gone up from the recommended 10% to 30% of total calories.
             Less than 7% of all children and adolescents consume less than the recommended
              3 servings of vegetables/ day.

The average snack after a soccer game is ―calorically over-compensating‖ and ―nutritionally under-
nourishing‖. The purpose of a snack after a game is to replace glycogen that was depleted from the
muscles. The younger ages may not even need one as their games are not as intense as the older
ages. However, re-hydrating with water is necessary for all.

Half-time – Are snacks necessary?
       No, because the total game time is not an endurance event exceeding 90 minutes.

Guidelines for snacks after soccer games:
 100 – 200 calories of carbohydrate within ½ hour after a game
 Choose a snack with high fiber, limited added sugars, and whole grains

Suggestions: Choose 1.
 fruit would be an excellent choice—1 cup grapes, berries, or melon, a sliced apple, pear, orange
  or peach, a small banana, ¼ cup raisins, 1 cup canned, unsweetened fruit
 1 oz. whole grain Gold Fish crackers, 7 Triscuit crackers, 18 All-Bran Multi-grain crackers, 1
  Pepperidge Farm 100% whole wheat mini bagel, Kellogg’s Fiber Plus granola bar (120 calories),
  Quaker granola bar with fiber & omega-3’s (150 calories)
 4 - 6 oz. low fat or non fat yogurt

Hydration -- Which fluid is best?
Water is best. Sports drinks can offer some benefit to activities lasting more than 60- 90 minutes,
or if the activity is taking place in hot, humid conditions. Aim to drink fluids on a schedule.
Fruit juice and soft drinks should not be used during games. They provide 10-15% carbohydrate,
and thus very concentrated in sugar. So they take longer to absorb, which could result in cramps,
nausea, or diarrhea. Carbonation makes one feel full and may make your throat burn.
Recommended Fluid Schedule:

After activity                                   3 cups for each pound of body weight lost

Is a special meal necessary before a game?
A player should eat a healthy meal before a game—including at least 3 of the food groups.
That means a whole grain or high-fiber carbohydrate source, plenty of vegetables, some protein
and non-fat milk at least 2 hours before a game. But it’s important to eat healthy meals all
of the time.

Should milk be avoided?
It is not necessary to avoid milk unless a child has a milk allergy or if it poses problems with
asthma or during a cold.
