Alabama Student Grant Alabama Student Grant 1) DESCRIPTION AND VALUE An award of grant assistance at an eligible independent Alabama college or university. Is not based on need. Up to $1200 per academic year with maximum amount available only when sufficient funds are available. 2) WHO MAY APPLY Undergraduate students--both half-time and full-time--who are Alabama residents attending Birmingham- Southern College, Concordia College, Faulkner University, Huntingdon College, Judson College, Miles College, Oakwood University, Samford University, Selma University, Southeastern Bible College, Southern Vocational College, Spring Hill College, Stillman College, and the University of Mobile. 3) HOW TO APPLY Applications are available from the financial aid office at the institution you plan to attend. Application deadline dates are printed on the application form. Description and Value DESCRIPTION LIST OF ACCEPTABLE PROOFS TO DECLARE ALABAMA RESIDENCY ALL ITEMS CAN BE EITHER THE STUDENT’S AND/OR THE PARENT’S 1. ALABAMA DRIVERS LICENSE Issue date must be a minimum of twelve (12) months prior to the date of application. 2. PROOF OF RESIDENCY Must be a letter from your landlord on company letterhead or a copy of your lease. Either document must verify current occupancy for twelve (12) months prior to the date of application. 3. PROOF OF OWNERSHIP OR REAL ESTATE PROPERTY Copy of your mortgage deed dated a minimum of twelve (12) months prior to the date of application. 4. PROOF OF PAYMENT TO UTILITY COMPANY Must have verification on company letterhead stating when you began service until present. Must be a minimum of twelve (12) months. 5. PROOF OF EMPLOYMENT Must be a letter from your employer (H.R. Dept. or supervisor) on company letterhead verifying the status and length of employment. Verification must indicate a minimum of twelve (12) months at full-time status. 6. ALABAMA STATE TAX RETURNS Evidence of payment of income tax to the state of Alabama for the preceding fiscal year. Federal tax returns will not be accepted. 7. VOTER’S REGISTRATION CARD The issue date must be a minimum of twelve (12) months prior to the date of application. 8. HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA A copy of your Alabama high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate 9. FISHING/HUNTING LICENSE The issue date must be a minimum of twelve (12) months prior to the date of application. 10. LETTER FROM A CHURCH PASTOR Verification must be from pastor of church official stating when you started attending service regularly. Letter must be signed and on church letterhead. 11. CAR REGISTRATION Registration must be dated a minimum of one (1) year prior to the present year, along with current registration. NOTE: Documents outside of this list (items 1 – 11) are not acceptable and will be denied. Who May Apply ALABAMA STATE GRANT CRITERIA • FIRST-TIME APPLICANTS 1. Must be a resident in the state of Alabama for a period of no less than twelve (12) months proceeding the date of application. 2. Must be enrolled in school for at least six (6) hours. 3. Must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.00 4. Complete the application and return it to the Oakwood College Office of Financial Aid along with five (5) proofs of residency from the attached list. • RETURNING APPLICANTS Students who received a state grant award during the 2007-2008 school year need only to submit a 2007 Alabama state tax return and your 2007 W-2(s) with the completed application. This information will be used to update your 2008-09 file. • NOTED INFORMATION 1. To be considered for a 2008-09 award, this information must be received and dated in the Office of Financial Aid by October 3, 2008. 2. First-time, Spring 2009 applicants must submit information by February 13, 2009. 3. No applications for Spring 2009 will be accepted during the Fall term 4. All materials must be turned in with the completed application. Incomplete applications will not be accepted or considered.
