Configuration/Configuration Guidelines

NCR 7454 Terminal Hardware

  Hardware Features vs. Kits
The 7454 product release uses NCR‘s standard conventions for features (identified with an F) and kits (identified with a
K).

Features are ordered with the original unit and are installed in the workstation at the factory. Features include required
cables, unless different cable options can be selected. The configuration guide notes indicate when a cable is not
included and should be ordered as a separate item.

Kits are packaged separately and require field installation, unless otherwise indicated.

Most features and kits offered are identified with a 7454 class number. Printers and other peripherals and their respective
features, which are shipped separately from the terminal, are generally identified with a separate class number, such as
7194-xxxx for the 7194 printer. The 7454 also utilizes kits from other NCR products, such as the 7401 and the 7453.

Note: As you go through the configuration process, you‘ll notice that sometimes you have to choose an option, even
though there‘s only one choice. That‘s because those features may have multiple options in future releases. Refer to the
7454 Lifecycle Plan/Roadmaps for more information.

  Base Model
Choice of base model should be made based on color and operator display size requirements.

  Main Board Assembly and Processor
The 7454 uses Pentium class processors in These low heat-emitting processors allow the 7454 to use passive cooling.
The future processor roadmap depends on the ability to use faster processors and maintain low heat levels.

Video is integrated onto the processor board. 7454 Models 3X04 provide 4 MB of dedicated video memory.

  RAM
Model 3704 has 32MB on-board memory. The 7454 contains one RAM socket. Release 2.2 models – 3404 and 3504
have 64MB soldered down on the board

The 7454 uses a 64-bit memory architecture. Larger modules will be considered if customer demand warrants. Maximum
DRAM size supported by the chipset is 256MB.

NCR Confidential Page 39
When choosing RAM sizes F025 and F026 are incremental to 64 MB already included on the processor board.

  Hard Disk
Required – Select one:

Since the initial release of 7454, hard disk sizes have increased dramatically. The current sizes being shipped is 10 GB.
As a result, only one disk feature will be offered.

  Operating System
Not Required – If none is chosen, the terminal will ship with No O/S. If an O/S is desired, then one of the following
features may be ordered.
The following features are applicable to modes 3X04.

   7454-F400 NO O/S
7454-F422 Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (requires 64 MB memory)

This feature is included with each base model

  Customer Displays
Three customer display options are available as features:
 No customer display
 Integrated low mount 4x20 customer display
 Integrated high post 4x20 customer display

The 4x20 displays support up to 20 5x7 characters on one line. Up to 4 lines can be displayed at once. The displays
include the cable required to connect to the parallel port on the 7454.

Remote customer displays are available as kits, and are described later in this document. If a customer requires no
customer display, or one of the remote customer display kits, then the ―no customer display‖ feature must be ordered.
This feature provides a cover for the 7454 without the display. The cover is rounded at the end for aesthetic purposes.

    Port Notes
The first RS-232 port is an optionally powered port. The terminal is shipped with power set to off as the default. A jumper
switch on the main board must be changed in order to enable power.

The customer display port is a parallel port that uses an Amplimite High Density Subminiature D-Type Connector (28 pin).
This high-density connector was chosen due to space constraints on the board  a standard Centronics connector (25
pin) would not fit. The 28 pin connector also allows the port to be powered, supporting the 4x20 customer display with
one cable.

NCR Confidential Page 47
The 7454-F611 or 1416-C472-0006 is a cable that converts the 28 pin, powered parallel port to a 25 pin Centronics, non-
powered parallel port.

The cash drawer port on the 7454 supports dual cash drawers via an Y cable. OPOS and JavaPOS drivers, however,
cannot report the status of individual drawers when connected in this fashion. This is not a flaw or a shortcoming in
OPOS or JavaPOS; it is an architectural requirement when two devices share one port.

OPOS and JavaPOS can support any of the following cash drawer scenarios:
1. A single cash drawer with full status reporting.
2. Two cash drawers with shared status reporting, i.e., a drawer is open, but which drawer is not identified.
3. Two cash drawers with no status reporting.

Consult with your customer and application provider to determine the best option.

Cash Drawers

2189 Cash Drawer

NCR‘s premium (top-of-the-line) cash drawer includes an extra large area behind the till for coin roll storage. The drawer
includes slip slots in the front panel. A lock feature must be ordered separately. The 2189-F101 is a three-position lock
(Lock, Unlock and Drawer Release). A 2189-F030 Manual Release Assembly must be ordered with the F101 to enable
the drawer release function from the drawer lock. A supervisor key is required to access the lock‘s drawer release
position. The F103 is a standard two-position lock (Lock/Unlock) and the F102 is the ―No Lock‖ feature that includes a
plastic cover inserted in the lock opening.

The 2189 includes a 7 ft. 4 inch. (2.2 meter) cable. The top of the drawer is not flat. It is built with ridges to secure a
peripheral tray or second cash drawer. Therefore, the terminal cannot be stacked directly on top of this drawer.

Note: A 7454-F611 or 1416-Cxxx- must be ordered to be able to use the 5972. This feature (cable) is required to convert
the 28 pin, powered parallel port to a 25 pin Centronics, non-powered parallel port. The customer display port is a parallel
port that uses an Amplimite High Density Subminiature D-Type Connector (28 pin). This high-density connector was
chosen due to space constraints on the board  a standard Centronics connector (25 pin) would not fit. The 28 pin
connector also allows the port to be powered, supporting the 4x20 customer display with one cable.

5973 International VFD Customer Display
The 5973 International VFD Customer Display is a single matrix 256x64 pixel display. This permits international
character sets to be displayed more legibly. (Note: It cannot display graphics.) A variety of mounting options are available
for the display. These mounting options can also be ordered for the locally sourced Japan Third Party Product (TPP)
2336-K456/457 by ordering 5973-F009 with the appropriate model.

NCR 7837 Scanner
The NCR 7837 Linear Imaging Scanner is a hand-held scanner that uses imaging technology to read bar codes at the
point of service (POS). It is targeted for POS applications where item throughput is low and hands-free operation is not
required. This includes Specialty Store checkout, Department Stores, and specialty checkout within Food, Drug, and
Mass Merchandise stores. The NCR 7837 is not appropriate for POS applications that require long-range scanning such
as scanning in a cart while standing behind a checkout counter.

Using state-of-the-art imaging technology, the NCR 7837 Linear Imaging Scanner allows aggressive depth-of-field
scanning. It reads typical retail bar codes from 0‖ to 8‖ from the scanner, ideally matching the needs of handheld POS
scanning. An innovative new aiming line, that is brighter than a laser, is combined with the leading-edge depth-of-field
capability. The wide, brightly focused scan line allows easier and quicker targeting of the NCR 7837, speeding up the

NCR Confidential Page 55
scanning process. An extremely fast scan/decode rate of 270 per second, nearly 7 times the rate of most laser scanners,
rounds out the NCR 7837 performance to exceed that of traditional handheld laser scanners.

Setting new levels in reliability, the NCR 7837 comes with a three-year warranty. For the first time a depth-of-field
handheld scanner is available with no moving parts. It will withstand 25 consecutive drops to concrete from 5‘, nearly a
40% improvement over laser handheld scanners.

The NCR 7837 raises the bar in handheld scanners. It offers higher performance, easier aiming, and more
reliability/durability to set a new standard for POS scanning.

When configuring a 7837 with a 7454, choose the following components:
 Scanner base unit
 Power supply
 RS-232 9 pin data cable
 Optional hands free stand

Please refer to the 7837 Order and Configuration Nugget on TKC for more information.

Important Note: There has been some confusion about whether the 7837 can connect to the 7454 via the keyboard port.
The 7454 does not support wedge devices, so this is not a valid configuration. Any documentation that states otherwise
should be brought to the document owner‘s attention immediately.

Electronic Payment Products
The 7454 now supports the 5945 and 5992 Retail Electronic Payment Products. When configuring a 5945 or a 5992 for
the 7454, remember that a 9 pin RS-232 data cable and a separate power supply are required.

It is recommended that the 5992 Signature Capture unit utilize one of the serial ports on the 7454, rather than using one
of the RS 232 ports on either the Ethernet to RS 232 Expander or the USB to RS 232 expander.

Please refer to the Retail Electronic Payment Products Order and Configuration Nugget for more information.

Third Party Products
The following Third Party Products have been released to support the 7454.

Ethernet to RS-232 Expander
Developed by Systech Corporation, the RCS/3000 Intelligent Port Server provides LAN attached serial port expansion.
The RCS/3000 attaches to the Ethernet LAN as any other device, and provides 4 DB-9 serial ports. Each of these ports is
owned by one of the POS or PC-based devices on the LAN. A different device can own each port, but a port cannot be
owned by more than one device. Systech‘s NativeCOM software is required for every device that owns a port. The port
appears as a COMx: port to the host device.

Using software, each port can be configured to support RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 communications.

The RCS/3000 requires AC power. An external 100/220V worldwide power supply ships with each unit.

Developed by IONetworks, these kits provide 2 and 4 high-speed serial ports by connecting to the USB port on the 7454.
These ports are assigned to the terminal that hosts the kit. Multiple modules can be added to a single USB port for
additional serial ports. USB drivers come with the kit to support Windows 95,98, and NT. No external power supply is
needed.

These devices are not supported under MS-DOS.

Parallel Port External CD-ROM
This kit includes a CD-ROM Bantam 24X Parallel CD-ROM. Data and power cables are not included. NCR provides a
cable (1416-C464-0006, ordered separately) that attaches to the 7454 powered parallel port and provides data and
power to the CD-ROM.

The 7454 BIOS has been modified to recognize this CD-ROM as a boot device. Only this CD-ROM can boot the 7454.
The appropriate 7454 LPIN CD have been modified to be bootable media.

This kit is being released to accommodate software loads and crisis recovery in configurations where a PC Server with a
CD-ROM is not present. One CD-ROM is required for each location.

This device is not designed to be permanently attached to the 7454 for several reasons. First, as it is an external device,
there are no mounting options. Second, the device cannot co-exist with another parallel port device, such as a customer

Certain IEEE 802.11 compliant wireless LAN cards from various suppliers such as Lucent Technologies, Symbol
Technologies, and others may now have been certified for functionality within the 74XX terminal and are separately
orderable as Class 2330 Wireless LAN upgrade kits and complete infrastructure components.

However, Class 2330 wireless LAN products are classified as Third Party Products and may not be always orderable for
use in certain countries due to non-certification in these countries by the supplier (Lucent, Symbol, etc) and/or the lack of
Wireless LAN Professional Services (planning, site surveys, installation, and on-going support) being available in a
particular region. Also, NCR is not responsible for specific country certification of this type of product.

NCR 7454 Platform Software
7454 platform software is comprised of various components that work together to provide an overall solution aimed at
reducing TCO. The following list provides a description of these server and client components, their uses, and their
dependencies. Please refer to the 7454 technical publications in the Information Products section of this document for
detailed installation and configuration information.

Please note that if the 7454-3X04-8001 with no operating system is ordered, the appropriate NCR platform software is
still required.

Server-side Components
7454 terminals may require a server. This server can be a local or a remote PC, or a 7454 acting as a workstation/server.
Standalone configurations are also supported (a workstation/server with no clients).

The following components are required on 7454 workstation/servers.

NT 4.0 Server or NT Workstation 4.0
Required for hosting FitClient Manager SE and related components.

NT Service Pack 3 or 4
NT Service Pack 3 or 4 is required. Use of either is supported. The 7454 is currently shipping with SP 4,installed on the
hard disk, and also has SP6 in a separate directory, should a customer wish to upgrade or use SP6.

NOTE: If a customer elects to implement Fit Client Manager LE only (without Fit Client SE) then a CD-ROM
device is required for crisis recovery. This configuration does not require Windows NT as a mandatory
component of a store configuration.

NCR Confidential Page 64
The customer must have an enterprise management system in place in order to take advantage of the agent.
Additionally, the enterprise management system will have to be modified in order to support communications with the
agent. NCR is making the agent‘s MIB available to the major enterprise management system vendors in order to facilitate
those modifications.

Operating System Related Client Platform Software

Windows CE is not a drop in replacement for 9x, NT, or 2000. CE supports a subset of the Win32 API, so certain
functions are missing. Remember, CE is positioned to fill a gap in Microsoft‘s operating system portfolio. It complements
the existing Win32 operating systems; it does not replace any of them.

Windows CE will not support a flex drive. CD-ROM support will be provided in version 3.0.

A POS terminal dedicated to a single function that is primarily task-based, like a traditional checkout terminal, is probably
a good candidate for Windows CE. A POS terminal that supports multiple applications simultaneously that can be
switched between via hot key, and if those applications are primarily knowledge worker based, like a layaway application,
is probably not a CE candidate – look at 9x or NT.

Windows CE will not ship preinstalled on out terminals due to the nature of the operating system. Terminals purchased
with Windows CE will ship with a license to use the operating system. The operating system itself will typically be
provided as part of the solution (NCR branded, partner provided, or customer developed).

NCR‘s implementation of Windows CE requires a TCP/IP LAN connection to a Windows NT Workstation or Windows NT
Server based system. This system must host a network management website called NCR FitClient Manager. This
management tool provides mechanisms for managing software configurations, system states, and network image loading.
Windows CE will be network loaded with offline boot capability.

All NCR POS Workstations will run the client portions of NCR FitClient Manager.

Except for certain exceptions, standalone terminals are not supported. Windows CE terminals require an in-store
Windows NT workstation or Windows NT server.

MS-DOS Operating System and Associated Platform Software
MS-DOS provides base client operating system functionality. Customers that need a low cost solution and/or have an
existing DOS application that they wish to migrate to new hardware should consider MS-DOS.

It is important to remember the following key points when proposing DOS on the 7454:
1. MS-DOS does not support all of the hardware features built into the 7454. Examples of hardware not supported
include the system monitors and the motion sensor. If hardware is not supported, it is because DOS drivers are not
     available.
2. TAPS drivers are available for most 7454 peripherals, but no new TAPS development was done for the 7454. This is
consistent with NCR‘s decision to undertake no new TAPS development.
3. NCR does not provide networking software for DOS on the 7454 (NCR does not offer networking software for DOS on
any other POS terminals, either). Customers wanting to install DOS terminals are likely migrating an existing
application, including network software. That network software should be included in the migration plan.

NCR Confidential Page 67
4. DOS terminals can function as clients only. Workstation/server and standalone DOS configurations are not supported.
DOS client terminals require a local ISP running NT Server or Workstation and the associated NCR platform software.

MS-DOS is shipped on the hard drive with the 7454-3203-8001. TAPS drivers are shipped on a separate CD.

Windows Operating Systems and Associated Platform Software
7454 terminals running a Windows operating system require NCR client platform software to function effectively and
properly. The following operating systems are supported:
 Windows 95 (client only)
 Windows 98 (client only)
 Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (client, workstation/server, or standalone)
 Windows CE
 Windows 2000 Professional

Windows 9x
NCR strongly recommends Windows 98 for customers wishing to install a Windows 9x operating system. Windows 98
contains several improvements over Windows 95, for the same price. Among the improvements is a vastly superior
installation process, which improves installation and integration tasks. Unless your customer has specific requirements for
Windows 95, such as consistency with an installed base, Windows 98 should be the Windows 9x operating system of
choice.

All Windows 98 licenses shipped with 7454‘s are Windows 98 release 2. For more information on Windows 98‘s
advantages over Windows 95, please consult Microsoft‘s web page: http://www.microsoft.com.

Internet Explorer 5
MSIE 5 is required for 7454 clients to access the FitClient Manager web site on the server. MSIE 5 is provided on the
gold drive that ships with Windows based 7454‘s.
Client Registry Mirroring Service
Components are required on the client and the server to reflect changes to the registry between the FitClient manager
web site and 7454 clients. The CRMS also handles various other client functions, such as collecting asset information,
handling user alerts, and generating Store Minder logs for any POST errors.
OPOS
OPOS provides access to retail peripherals attached to a 7454 running a Win32 application.
JavaPOS
JavaPOS provides access to retail peripherals attached to a 7454 running a Java application.
Store Minder Runtime Client & Messages Files
These Store Minder components are required on the client for sending error messages from the OPOS drivers upstream.
Applications can also be instrumented to report operational events using the Store Minder API.

The Retail Platform Software for Windows LPIN will provide
a single Windows Installer executable that can be used to
install NCR OPOS, NCR JavaPOS, NCR FitClient Agent,
and NCR Store Minder Runtime Client components on NCR
terminals that run Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98
or Windows 95 operating systems. The Retail Platform
Software for Windows installation will be released on a
single LPIN, D370-0548-0000, eliminating the need for
separate media for NCR retail terminal software. The Retail
Platform Software for Windows LPIN is scheduled to achieve
ICI status the end of January or February 2002. After that
time, the following LPINS will be discontinued in favor of the

System Recovery
NCR provides 7454 users with the ability to recover hard drives to their factory state (gold drive recovery). NCR also
provides users with the ability to create their own recovery images, which can include applications and other unique
software that resides on a system (custom drive recovery).

Gold Drive Recovery
If a 7454 hard disk fails, one of the following procedure should be used to recover.

NCR Confidential Page 70
  Recovery from Server
Once the hard disk has been replaced, reboot the system. The system BIOS contains PXE, or Pre-Execution
Environment instructions. These instructions check for the presence of an operating system on the local hard disk. If an
operating system is not found, a message is sent to the server requesting a system recovery. The server, using
components from the 7454 Server-Side Platform Software, will send instructions to the client that will prepare the hard
disk for an operating system load. The client‘s operating system will then be installed from the server. Following that,
the 7454 Client-Side Platform Software and the application can be restored, again from the server.

This is not an automatic process. User intervention is required to configure the boot image for disk recovery. Once
restored, the 7454 must be configured to prohibit a disk recovery. This is to keep an accidental recovery from being
performed on a 7454 that doesn‘t need it.

Recovery Using the Parallel Port External CD-ROM
Once the hard disk has been replaced, attach the parallel port CD-ROM and reboot the system. The system will boot
from the CD-ROM, and begin rebuilding the hard drive. Following that, the 7454 Client-Side Platform Software and the
application can be restored, again from the CD-ROM.

Required as Noted:

Custom Drive Recovery
Many customers have expressed a need to recover hard drives beyond the operating system. In response to this need,
NCR has licensed Symantec‘s Norton Ghost product for resale.

Norton Ghost works by creating an exact image of a PC‘s hard drive, effectively taking a ―snapshot‖ of all the files –
hidden, visible, and active – that make up the operating system, applications, and configuration settings. That image can
be stored on recovery media, such as on a server‘s hard drive, or on a CD-ROM. In case of a hard drive failure, that
image can be restored to the system‘s new hard drive. Customers can also recover individual directories and files from
the image file. Recovery procedures are the same as those outlined in the previous gold drive recovery section.

NCR Confidential Page 71
The image can also be copied to any number of PCs, creating completely identical installations. It can also be copied to
many PCs simultaneously (multicasting), reducing the time required for large roll out and upgrade jobs by 90% or more.
Norton Ghost provides a utility called Ghost Walker that assigns a unique security identifier to each cloned system.

Also included is GDISK, a utility that completely replaces the MS-DOS FDISK and FORMAT utilities. GDISK provides all
of the functionality of those utilities, as well as on the fly formatting, better disk space utilization, batch mode operation,
and extensive partition reporting.

Norton Ghost supports all operating systems supported on the 7454. The 7454 terminal will begin shipping with a Norton
Ghost license as an every unit item in the near future. RSG will issue a separate communication noting the serial number
break in of the license. Note that Norton Ghost media will not be included – only the license to use the software.

Customers that need a copy of Norton Ghost to create a custom image, or customers that wish to license the software for
terminals already installed can order the following LPIN:

Operating Systems
NCR offers a variety of operating systems on its retail devices. Offerings and delivery
methods vary by device – please consult the specific product‘s nuggets for further
information.

The following describes the various operating systems offered.

MS-DOS 6.22
Microsoft continues to offer MS-DOS to select customers such as NCR, and NCR
continues to offer MS-DOS 6.22, primarily to support retailers that are adding to an
installed base of DOS terminals. NCR does not recommend MS-DOS for new
installations.

Microsoft Windows CE 3.0
Windows CE is Microsoft's entry-level 32-bit Windows operating system. Microsoft
initially released the operating system for use on handheld devices, but expanded its
reach into a number of embedded systems, including automobile stereo systems, cable
TV set top boxes, and POS terminals. NCR's release of Windows CE is based on
Microsoft Windows CE version 3.0.

Within Microsoft's operating system portfolio, price and operating system size are CE's
two key differentiators. CE is priced roughly the same as MS-DOS, reflecting its position
as the entry-level operating system in Microsoft's portfolio. CE also fits in a very small
memory footprint, compared to other Windows operating systems. For example, CE
can run in a POS terminal with no local persistent storage and a minimum of 32MB
RAM. Local persistent storage, e.g., flash disks and hard disks, is supported, though.
Flex drives and CD-ROM drives are not.

Compared to other entry-level operating systems offerings, Microsoft believes that CE's
key advantage is its adherence to the Windows 32 API set (although CE only supports
a subset of the API). A vast number of programmers and other technical resources are
intimately familiar with this set of interfaces, so becoming familiar with the operating
system should be a quick process. Most end users are also familiar with the Windows
look and feel, making CE based systems instantly useable, if developed properly.

Windows CE is not a drop in replacement for other Windows operating systems. CE
supports a subset of the Win32 API, so certain functions are missing. CE is positioned
to fill a gap in Microsoft's operating system portfolio. It complements the existing Win32
operating systems; it does not replace any of them.

A POS terminal dedicated to a single function that is primarily task-based, like a
traditional checkout terminal, is probably a good candidate for Windows CE. A POS
terminal that supports multiple applications simultaneously that can be switched
between via hot key, and if those applications are primarily knowledge worker based,

NCR Confidential Page 74
like a layaway application, is probably not a CE candidate – consider Windows 2000 or
Windows XP, upon release.

Windows CE will not ship preinstalled on out terminals due to the nature of the
operating system. Terminals purchased with Windows CE will ship with a license to use
the operating system. The operating system itself will typically be provided as part of
the solution (NCR branded, partner provided, or customer developed).

NCR's implementation of Windows CE requires a TCP/IP LAN connection to a
Windows NT Workstation or Windows NT Server based system. This system must
host a network management website called NCR FitClient Manager. This
management tool provides mechanisms for managing software configurations, system
states, and network image loading. Windows CE will be network loaded with offline
boot capability.

With certain exceptions, standalone terminals are not supported. Windows CE
terminals require an in-store workstation/server or server running Windows NT,
Windows 2000, or Windows XP.

For more information, please refer to the Windows CE Frequently Asked Questions
document.

Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows 98
Windows 95 and Windows 98 are being phased out as NCR retail operating system
offerings in favor of Windows 2000 and Windows XP. As with MS-DOS, Windows 95
and Windows 98 should be proposed only when adding to a legacy installed base as
required by the customer.

Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0
Windows NT was Microsoft‘s first Windows operating system to move away from MS-
DOS underpinnings in favor of a more robust, reliable kernel. While it has become a
popular operating system choice for NCR POS customers, the introduction of Windows
2000 and now XP places NT in a legacy position. Customers using NT should begin
migration plans to XP upon its release. No new system proposals for NT should be
made.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
The successor to Windows NT, Windows 2000 was Microsoft‘s preferred offering for
business systems prior to the release of Windows XP. Windows 2000 added significant
functionality over Windows NT, such as USB support and enhanced security.

Windows 2000 continues to be NCR‘s preferred operating system offering for high-end
systems, although Windows XP will soon become the preferred offering.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Released by Microsoft in late 2001, Windows XP Professional Windows XP is the next
version of Microsoft Windows beyond Windows 2000 and Windows Millennium Edition
(Me)1.

Windows XP converges the two Windows operating system families (NT/2000 and
95/98/Me) by integrating the strengths of Windows 2000—standards-based security,
manageability and reliability with the best features of Windows 98 and Windows Me—
Plug and Play, easy-to-use user interface, and innovative support services.

Windows XP is built on an enhanced Windows 2000 code base, with different versions
aimed at home users and business users: Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP
Professional. Note that NCR will only release Windows XP Professional.

NCR plans to certify and release Windows XP Professional on selected platforms in
late 2002. Consult the nuggets for specific programs for more information.

For more information on Windows XP, visit Microsoft‘s XP web site.

Microsoft Windows XP Embedded
Windows XP Embedded is the componentized version of Windows XP Professional.
Based on the same binaries as Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Embedded
enables developers to individually select only the features they need for the systems
being developed.

By selecting only the components required for a specific environment or solution, the
overall cost of the operating system can be lowered. It is also possible to run XP
Embedded, or XPe, in less powerful (and therefore less expensive) hardware than XP
Professional.

NCR plans to certify and release Windows XP Embedded on selected platforms in late
2002. Two different images are planned for release.

The first image will contain all Windows XP Embedded components, and will be
functionally equivalent to Windows XP Professional. This image will require a hard disk
based device.

The second image will contain only those components required for basic retail
functionality, but will fit in a 256MB compact flash disk component. This image should
be considered for customers that require devices without hard drives. (Many customers
have historically requires diskless terminals due to their perception that hard drives
increase device failure rates. These customers seem to be receptive to compact flash
implementations.) Care should be taken when considering this image to ensure that the

01 Windows Millennium Edition, or Me, was Microsoft’s operating system successor to
Windows 98. NCR never released it as a POS operating system.

NCR Confidential Page 76
offered components match the customer‘s requirements. IPP documentation will
provide details on this image.

Consult the nuggets for specific programs for release information.

Windows XPe does not currently operate in a pure diskless environment. NCR is
working closely with Microsoft to develop this functionality, as diskless terminals are a
requirement in many of our markets.

Linux
Linux is an operating system that was initially created as a hobby by Linus Torvalds
while a student at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Torvalds had an interest in Minix,
a small UNIX system, and decided to develop a system that exceeded the Minix
standards. He began his work in 1991 when he released version 0.02 and worked
steadily until 1994 when version 1.0 of the Linux Kernel was released. The current full-
featured version is 2.4 (released January 2001) and development continues.

Linux is developed under the GNU General Public License and its source code is freely
available to everyone. This however, doesn't mean that Linux and its assorted
distributions are free -- companies and developers may charge for it as long as the source
code remains available. Linux may be used for a wide variety of purposes including
networking, software development, and as an end-user platform. Linux is often
considered an excellent, low-cost alternative to other more expensive operating
systems.

Due to the very nature of Linux's functionality and availability, it has become quite
popular worldwide and a vast number of software programmers have taken Linux's
source code and adapted it to meet their individual needs. Many retailers, particularly
those with IT organizations with strong UNIX backgrounds, are at various stages of
developing and implementing Linux based POS systems.

NCR‘s first retail product certified to run Linux, the 7451, was released in 2001. NCR
plans to add to its Linux support in 2002 by certifying the 7456 and other platforms to
run the operating system and providing Linux based platform software.

Note that NCR does not intend to preload or ship Linux on any terminals. Customers
that wish to run Linux on one of our certified devices should order a no o/s terminal and
obtain their own copy of Linux. If your customer needs assistance with this, consider a
services engagement.

NCR Retail SDK for Windows CE (D370-0495-0000)
Ordering Windows CE for an NCR retail workstation does not provide any software – it
provides a license to run Windows CE on that device. Creating a Windows CE image
for an NCR workstation requires the NCR Retail SDK for Windows CE.

The NCR Retail SDK developed by NCR is based on the Windows CE 3.00 operating
system. It provides a base CE platform that has been customized for NCR retail
terminal Platforms. Microsoft® Windows® CE Platform Builder 3.0 and Embedded
Visual C++ 3.0 must be installed on the development system prior to installing any
software contained in this release. Platform Builder and Visual C++ are not included
with the SDK, and must be purchased from Microsoft or a Microsoft channel partner.

The above software is used to create a load image for a workstation licensed to run CE
3.0. That load image typically includes the operating system, platform software such as
OPOS, and the application.

Base Platform and 3rd Party Drivers (D370-1111-0100)
Some hardware components used in NCR‘s retail platforms require drivers that are not
included in the supported operating system. This LPIN provided drivers for those
hardware components. It also provides the Third Party Products or non-Every Unit Item
drivers for MicroTouch, I/O Networks, Backpack CDROM, PCMCIA, USB, and the
Telequip Coin Dispenser. For each feature, there are drivers for their respective
operating systems that are supported, including DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98,
Windows NT, and Windows 2000.

Retail Controls
NCR‘s retail controls are designed to provide application providers and customers with
standard application program interfaces (APIs) for our product line. Most NCR Solution
Providers find these tools invaluable in protecting the investment of their POS terminal
application. A user license for use of platform software and utilities in included in the
charge for each base unit.

The required terminal platform software needed for the customer installation will
depend on application requirements and operating system environment. Some
Solution Partners or customer applications have been developed to write directly to the
terminal peripherals, without relying on an intermediate API layer. Consider the
requirements of the specific application when determining which components to order.

NCR provides device drivers for our retail peripherals under MS-DOS and Windows.
Retail controls for Linux based systems are planned for release in 2002.

Terminal Application Platform Software (TAPS) (G730-0824-0000)
NCR provides a common API for MS-DOS systems called TAPS (Terminal Application
Platform Software) that continues to be enhanced to support selected new peripherals.
TAPS provides support for both DOS 6.22 and DOS sessions running under Windows
3.11 or Windows 95, and includes:
 Retail APIs
 Retail drivers
 Enhanced base drivers
 Loadable diagnostics
 VCO/V character sets

Loadable diagnostics included in TAPS are supported by a menu-driven diagnostics
application that can be loaded from any system load device (server or system hard
disk). This application allows the user to manually select and test any retail peripheral
supported under TAPS.

TAPS does not support all NCR peripherals, and in some cases the support is limited.
For up to date information on TAPS and supported peripherals, please refer to the user
documentation online at the following NCR web site. (Search on TAPS as a title word.)

TAPS is available as an LPIN, or can be downloaded from the following public NCR web
site.

OLE for Point of Sale (OPOS) (Included on D370-0548-0100)
The OLE for Retail POS, or OPOS, architecture and standard is the product of an
industry consortium that includes NCR and Microsoft. The OPOS architecture provides
standard POS peripheral access for Microsoft Windows 32-bit operating systems. The
layered architecture and industry-standard application programming interface (API)
allows for the mixing and swapping of peripherals from many vendors on a POS
workstation. Applications developed for one POS vendor‘s terminal can be easily
moved to another vendor‘s terminal with only the installation of new peripheral service
objects to support the new peripheral set. OPOS is endorsed by ARTS – the retail
association that drives standards into the industry.

                      POS Peripheral

NCR‘s OLE for Retail POS implementation offers the following benefits to customers:

 Ease of porting/migration and support for OPOS-based application software
 More rapid response to business change
 Best fit technology choices – best-in-class peripheral selection
 Improved POS support and maintenance, higher system availability
 Profile Manager – Graphical diagnostics and configuration tool
 Diagnostic logs and tallies
 OPOS Diagnostic Tools

The OPOS specifications define a common loadable diagnostic API for all device
classes called HealthCheck. This API defines three levels of diagnostics that are
available for each NCR service object.

The OPOS consortium elected not to incorporate diagnostic logs and tallies as part of
the OPOS standard. By providing these logs and tallies in an OPOS environment, NCR
creates additional value for our OPOS software and NCR peripherals.

OPOS is part of the Unified POS initiative managed by the Association for Retail
Technology Standards (ARTS). For more on the Unified POS standard, including
architectural information, visit the ARTS web site.

Java for Point of Sale (JavaPOS) (Included on D370-0548-0100)
JavaPOS is a standard that defines:
 An architecture for Java based POS device access
 A set of POS device interfaces (APIs) sufficient to support a range of POS solutions

NCR Confidential Page 80
The JavaPOS standards committee was formed by a collection of retail vendors
(including NCR) and end users, with a primary goal of providing device interfaces for
retail applications written in Java.

The benefits of JavaPOS include:
 The opportunity for reduced POS terminal costs, through the use of thinner clients
 Platform-independent applications, where the application is separated from both
   hardware and operating system specifics
 Reduced administration costs, because an application and supporting software may
be maintained on a server and loaded on demand by Java

JavaPOS defines a multi-layered architecture in which a POS application interacts with
the physical or logical device through the JavaPOS device.

In the above diagram, the JavaPOS device control is equivalent to the OPOS custom
control, and the device service is equivalent to the OPOS service object.

Our current JavaPOS implementation requires a Windows 32 bit operating system.
NCR plans to release a version of JavaPOS for Linux later in 2002.

Network and Systems Management Utilities

FitClient Manager
FitClient Manager is a suite of system management applications designed for NCR
Point of Sale terminals and Self Service web kiosks. Each member of the FitClient
Manager suite is targeted at different levels of system management. FitClient Manager
LE manages a single system. FitClient Loader enables a server to provide load

NCR Confidential Page 81
functionality for PXE based clients. FitClient Manager SE enables servers to load and
manage PXE clients.

FitClient Manager LE (Included on D370-0548-0100)
FitClient Manager LE is a stand-alone implementation of FitClient Manager. It runs
locally on a client and is accessed through Microsoft Internet Explorer. All files reside on
the client‘s hard drive or, in the case of Windows CE, are part of the boot image.

FitClient Manager LE provides client-based, stand-alone management of retail
peripherals, platform features and components. For retail peripherals, it allows the
addition, modification, and deletion of OPOS profiles for supported retail peripherals.
Basic diagnostics are provided for each peripheral. FitClient Manager LE also provides
configuration and diagnostics for various platform features.

Network based crisis recovery is not available under FitClient Manager LE. For network
based crisis recovery, implement FitClient Manager SE.

  FitClient Loader
FitClient Loader is the boot-only management solution in the FitClient Manager suite.
It provides boot image management for individual clients, or groups of clients. A PXE
Boot ROM must be present on the client to download network-based boot images.
Once loaded, the terminal cannot be managed via FitClient Loader, but can be
managed locally by FitClient Manager LE.

FitClient Loader does not provide any of the power state management features of
FitClient Manager SE, such as Wake-on-LAN, Shutdown-Now, and Daily Shutdown and
Restart. FitClient Loader does not provide access to a client‘s OPOS configuration or
diagnostics.

The FitClient suite is available for the following operating system environments:
 Windows 95 – FitClient Loader only
 Windows 98 SE – FitClient Loader only
 Windows NT Workstation 4.0
 Windows NT Server 4.0
 Windows 2000 Professional
 Windows 2000 Server

For portability across the operating environments, a Java Virtual Machine (JDK 1.1.4 or
greater) must be part of the operating system. The optional browser-based interface
requires either Internet Explorer 5.x or Netscape 6.x.

For Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT Workstation and Windows 2000
Professional installations, the NCR DHCP Server and NCR TFTP Server can be
installed. They interface directly to the Windows system registry, and are provided with
FitClient Loader. For Windows NT Server or Windows 2000 Server installations, the
Microsoft DHCP server should be used, although any standard DHCP server, either on

NCR Confidential Page 82
the FitClient Loader server, or elsewhere on the network, can be used. If the DHCP
server will not reside on the same physical box as the FitClient Loader, the DHCP
server must support the PXEClient option.

FitClient Loader has the same look and feel as FitClient Manager. FitClient Loader
does not require a Web Server such as IIS or PWS, but uses flat HTML files to provide
its content, much like FitClient Manager LE. It does not require a database for
configuration information. Instead, XML files are used to maintain configuration data.

The following diagram illustrates the architecture of FitClient Loader:

The FitClient Loader architecture requires that all supported clients be part a FitGroup.
Clients on the same FitGroup use the same load image. This allows a FitClient Loader
server to provide different images to clients, based on requirements. For example, a
retail location may have a FitGroup assigned for checkout terminals, another for service
desk terminals, and another for kiosks. Grouping devices makes managing load images
more efficient. Clients can also be managed individually. You can set boot images for a
group and all clients in the group get the same settings. Then you can change the
settings for an individual client to override what the group assigned. However, if you set
the group settings again, the group settings are reapplied to all the clients in the group.
The only exception to this is Boot first, which is only for new members of a group.

FitClient Loader provides the following group and client specific boot image options:

  FitClient Manager SE
For department and/or dial-up management, FitClient Manager SE provides server-
based management of the peripherals, platform, and software for each client. It also
adds software distribution, group management, some basic system management, and
network based crisis recovery. The following sections detail this additional functionality.

Software Distribution
A FitClient Manager SE server can distribute software to its supported clients for
installation. Installation packages must be in a single, installable file. These packages
are uploaded to the FitClient server. Once on the server, these packages can be
downloaded to clients. If the package is an executable, a user can download the
package at the client system and run it. PackageForTheWeb by InstallShield allows
standard installations to be bundled into a single file that, when run, will decompress
and install the software. Any executables should be digitally signed for security. If the

NCR Confidential Page 84
package is a Windows Installer package, an administrator can push the installation from
the server to a client. This does not require anyone to be at the client to install. The
installation is remote. Before the first ―push install‖ can be accomplished, the FitClient
LPIN must be installed on the remote client. After the initial installation, subsequent
FitClient upgrades can be ―pushed‖ from the server.

Group Management
The FitGroups section of FitClient Manager SE extends the FitClients functionality to
groups of clients. This allows administrators to manage clients as groups, eliminating
the need for repetitious changes on a client-by-client basis. When a client becomes a
member of a group, some of the configuration and management functionality is added
to the FitGroups and removed from the FitClients-view of that client. For example, when
a client is added to a group, all retail peripheral profiles of that client can only be
changed in the FitGroups area. In the FitClients area, the profiles cannot be managed
until the client is removed from the group. However, the each retail peripheral‘s
diagnostics remains a feature of the FitClients-view within FitClient Manager SE.

Systems Management Views
A view of the current status of each client can be seen in the FitViews section of
FitClient Manager SE. This view groups all clients that are being managed by FitClient
Manager SE onto one screen into two categories. These categories identify the
communication status between each client and the server and correspond to online and
offline.

Crisis Recovery
FitClient Manager SE servers can manage client crisis recovery. Recovery images are
stored on the server. Each client has the ability to boot from the network. An operator
specifies the boot image filename to be provided to the client during the boot process.
The client then uses this name to download the image.

Implementation
FitClient Manager SE is implemented using Active Server Pages on Windows NT with
either Internet Information Server or Personal Web Server.

The configuration for each client component is maintained on the server in a mirrored
copy of each client‘s registry. This mirroring allows changes to be made while a client is
offline. These changes will be pushed down to the client when it comes online.

SLP Downloading
Note: SLP is only supported on selected NCR retail workstations for legacy migration
purposes. PXE is the preferred load architecture; SLP installations should occur only
when absolutely necessary.

Consult the release information for the hardware in question to determine if SLP is
supported.

NCR Confidential Page 85
SLP downloading:
 Provides the ability to broadcast loads to all workstations simultaneously
 Provides the LAN Cache Driver which allows applications to load with less
     memory
 Provides the Redirector services which allow the workstation to use files located
     on the server

NCR provides an SLP loader for four different file server operating system
environments. Each of these loaders provides downloads from their respective
operating system environment to the client using the SLP message formats. The
Windows NT SLP Loader is available with three different licenses that vary in price by
the number of clients supported.

NCR University also offers a web based training course on the 7454 platform software,
with an emphasis on Fit Client Manager. This course is designed for Professional
Services, but should be of interest to anyone involved with the 7454.

The platform software course is also being offered as an LPIN, primarily for non-NCR
audiences. This LPIN should be available in March:

  G370-1653-0100 NCR FitClient Reference
This LPIN contains web based reference and training on FitClient Manager. It is
a web-based CBT course. This CD based version of the course is intended
primarily for external audiences that do not have access to NCRU, e.g.,
                     customers and partners.

Remote Accessibility and Control
Customer sites installed with a Win32 operating system such as Windows NT can be
provided with Remote Support via a product called Timbuktu from Netopia, Inc. This
remote access tool is the WCS preferred package for providing hardware and software
maintenance. Timbuktu provides NCR Remote Support Analysts with the ability to

NCR Confidential Page 86
remotely operate a Win32 based POS unit, along with the NT ISP server, for the
purpose of remote support. Timbuktu was selected from a variety of products based on
rigorous testing on various NCR products. Timbuktu displayed the best technical
capabilities of the Remote Access products tested, including Symantec‘s PC
Anywhere32. In the event a customer elects to use a tool other than Timbuktu, WCS
will provide support for the customer; however it should be conveyed to the customer
that Timbuktu is the suggested package the customer purchase.

For sites using a TCP/IP protocol to which an NCR Support Analyst wishes to connect,
Timbuktu only needs to be installed and NT services running. The 7454 would typically
be accessed via an NT Server with a dial-up connection or a TCP/IP WAN. For dial-up
connections to the server, the MS Windows NT Remote Access Service (RAS) must be
installed and configured to allow an NCR support analyst to gain access. Using
Timbuktu with RAS will not interfere with the modem‘s normal intended purpose,
excluding the time period a Remote Support Analyst is connected to that modem. It
should be noted that due to technical limitations, Timbuktu cannot co-exist on the same
Windows NT Server as any other remote access software packages. To obtain further
information on Timbuktu, please visit the Netopia web site at http://www.netopia.com/.

Managing Partner, as necessary. Involve the PS Managing Partner immediately in the
early stages of the selling cycle to ensure that all of the potential services are discussed
with the customer at the appropriate time. All of the NCR Professional Services should
always be discussed with the customer. Based on the customer’s needs, the PS
Managing Partner will develop an appropriate service set for the engagement. Don’t
assume that you know in advance which services will be required. Such assumptions
lead to missed opportunities and result in reduced service revenue.
