(updated 2008)

Introduction
At the ESC, being a good environmental steward is  everyone’s business.   Performing  your job in an  environmentally safe and sound manner benefits us  all by:
*  protecting the health of the surrounding ecosystem, *  preserving resources for future generations, *  being good neighbors to surrounding communities, *  minimizing impacts due to non‐compliance issues, *  and saving money by decreasing wasted resources.

Employee Responsibility
As a member of the ESC community,  you are responsible for
• Performing your job in an  environmentally safe and sound manner. • Knowing how your job impacts the  environment. • Adhering to standard operating  procedures (SOP). • Knowing what the potential  environmental impacts are for departing  from these SOPs. • Knowing the environmental legal (and  other) requirements of your job.

Why Do We Care?
Impacts to the environment from day‐to‐ day activities can be substantial.   Through our EMS we want to ensure we  have a beneficial not detrimental impact  to our surroundings.

Do Other Federal Agencies Care?
• If they don’t now they will.  Executive Order 13423
was signed in January 2007 which requires Federal  agencies to lead by example in advancing the nation’s  energy security and environmental performance. •The EO consolidates and strengthens numerous,  disparate Executive Orders into a cohesive set of goals  to promote sustainable practices across the public  sector.

What Are We Doing?
ESC has already taken many steps toward continual  environmental improvement
• Recycle over 100 lbs of cans, glass, and aluminum a month. • Recycle over 1000 lbs of white and colored paper a month. • Use 100% recycled‐content process  chlorine‐free copy paper. • Reduced annual electricity use by 17% compared to year  2001. • Reduced overall energy use by 33% compared to year 2001. • Reduced annual water use by 29% compared to
year 2001.

How Does This Affect Me?
• Recycling soda cans and double‐sided  printing is the not the total answer.   • An effective EMS requires the  participation of all employees.   • Everyone’s job has the potential to impact  the environment.  We want you to think  environmental protection in each task you  undertake throughout your work day! WHAT DID YOU DO TO PRESERVE THE ENVIRONMENT TODAY?

Our ESC Significant Aspects
Twelve Significant Aspects have been identified
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
7.

Chemical Resources Air Emissions Stormwater Discharge Electricity Consumption Fuel Consumption (Oil and Natural Gas) Fuel Consumption (Mobile Sources and Exhaust Emissions Associated with their Use)
Microbial Contamination

8. 9. 10. 11. 12.

Paper Consumption Radiation Waste Generation Wastewater Discharge Water Consumption

Which Significant Aspect will we focus on in 2007-2008?
Fuel Consumption by Mobile Sources and Exhaust  Emissions Associated with Their Use What processes contribute to this Significant Aspect?
– – – – – 1. Use of ESC vehicles for transportation 2. Use of personal vehicles for commuting 3.  Purchase of petroleum instead of other fuels 4.  Mowing and related grounds maintenance 5. Use of personal vehicles for business travel.

Our EMS Objectives and Targets 2007-2008
Objective 1: Increase use of the hybrid vehicle.  Target 1.1 Promote awareness of the hybrid vehicle among  ESC employees by sending out emails to staff, making posters  for display in building, conduct driving demo/s.  Target 1.2 Enhance and formalize ESC’s vehicle reservation  and tracking procedures by creating and implementing an  efficient tool with input from all appropriate parties.   Target 1.3 Create a tool to monitor the use of the hybrid to  determine if there is an increase in times of use or numbers of  miles driven.

Our EMS Objectives and Targets 2007-2008
Objective 2: Promote use of public transportation, ridesharing and  flexiplace and develop a system to help ESC employees  participate in a rideshare program. Target 2.1 Promote awareness of the carpooling/ridesharing  among ESC employees by sending out emails to staff and making  posters for display in building.  Target 2.2 Establish a formal rideshare matching program. Target 2.3 Promote use of ‘Episodic Flexiplace’ by educating staff  on process.  Target 2.4 Coordinate with Fort Meade’s EMS coordinator,  Andrea Tun, to evaluate joint rideshare matching opportunities  between ESC and Fort Meade employees.

ISO 14001:2004
We are an ISO registered facility.  What  does that mean to you?.....

ISO 14001 EMS Major Concepts
The International Standard ISO 14001 on which  EMS is based, has many elements. During this training we will review three main  elements: • Environmental Policy Stewardship • Environmental Aspects Sustainability • Environmental Impacts

Environmental Policy
The Environmental Policy describes ESC’s approach to  environmental management.  ESC personnel should  understand that the ESC’s Environmental Policy:  • Applies to all ESC personnel • Commits to environmental compliance • Commits to prevention of pollution • Commits to continual improvement • Is available on the ESC website at
http://www.epa.gov/region3/esc/ems/emspolicy.htm

Environmental Aspects
Environmental aspects are elements of ESC’s  activities that can potentially interact with the  environment. Examples are: Energy Consumption Water Consumption Chemical Release

Environmental Impacts
Environmental impacts are changes to the  environment resulting from an environmental  aspect. Examples are: Resource Depletion Water Resource  Depletion Soil and Water Degradation

Environmental Aspects and Impacts
Environmental aspects and environmental impacts exist in  a “CAUSE” and “EFFECT” relationship with each other.

ASPECTS (CAUSE) Energy Consumption Wastewater Chemical Release

IMPACTS (EFFECT) Resource Depletion Water Resource  Depletion Soil and Water Degradation

Significant Environmental Aspects at ESC
The EMS team has identified 11 significant  impacts.  The 3 which have been focused on the  most are:  • Chemical Resources • Water Consumption • Paper Use ESC’s significant environmental aspects must  be managed through operational procedures  and considered when setting environmental  objectives and targets.

Your Participation is Critical to the Success of Our EMS

Why Should YOU Participate?
Everyone knows their job affects the  environment.  Each person can  participate to conserve resources and  minimize environmental damage.

Did You Know?
Americans use 50 million tons of paper annually -- consuming more than 850 million trees.

Did You Know?
Energy saved from 1 recycled aluminum can will operate a TV set for 3 hours, and is the equivalent to half a can of gasoline.

Did You Know?
By turning down your central heating thermostat 1 degree, fuel consumption is cut by as much as 10 percent.

So What Should I Do?
Now you know some interesting facts about the savings which may result from using energy efficiently and recycling-here are some examples of DOs and DON’Ts.

DO
Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, and Refrain

DO
Use chemicals only when necessary. Use less toxic chemicals when possible. Close laboratory hoods each night.

DO
Use the EPASupplies Corporate Express website to order “green” office supplies
Found on the EPA@Work website: http://intranet.epa.gov

DO
Encourage others to participate in the EMS program. Seek guidance from the EMS team.

DO NOT
Pour chemicals or solvents down the drain.

DO NOT
Place bottles and cans in the trash. Put all recyclables in the appropriate bins.

DO NOT
Print only on one side.

DO
Print on both sides to reduce paper consumption.

ESC and YOU

Where To Go For Information

Suggest Ideas
We don’t know everything. Have an idea of how to  reduce environmental impacts, recycle, conserve  energy? Submit your ideas to the EMS team members!

Suggestion Form is on the J:/ drive

Participate
Yes, you recycle but… want to be more involved?
