                        Parenting Support

Practical Family Support Service
Service Offered: The Practical Family Support Service provides low level
preventative services. It is for parents who want to access support for a wide
range of concerns and for those who are not receiving high level intervention
support from Social Services. The aim is to address needs before they
escalate. This is done by offering practical support and assistance to families
who have at least one child aged between 5 to 13 years.
The service provides packages of support by drawing up individual action
plans with the family referred. The service is confidential. It ensures that
dignity is maintained and confidence is upheld at all times. The service offers
support within a family's own home or at an agreed meeting place. The
service is non-judgemental in attitude and recognises the need to be sensitive
to the family's issues.
Who is service for: Families and carers who have at least one child between
the ages of 5-13 years who live in North Lincolnshire. Families who require
low level preventative support.
How to refer: Referrals to the service can be either through an l agent
contacting PFSS with the family's consent or for a family to self refer.
Opening Times: Home-visits are made to be more flexible to meet needs.
Office contact hours are 08.30 - 17.30 Monday - Friday and answerphone
available outside office hours.

The Nurturing Programme:
A universal model for improving emotional, mental and physical health in
society. The Nurturing Programme provides structured 10 – week courses for
parents/carers and for children. The course is built around four constructs;

    Self-awareness and self-esteem
    Appropriate expectations
    Empathy
    Positive discipline

The parent Programme (an accredited course) improves parents‟ confidence
and skills.

Below are comments by people who have used the programme;

“I am more confident as a parent and as a person. I have now got clear
boundaries for my daughter and can handle anything parenthood can throw
at me. Instead of battling with one another, we have fun, enjoyable, relaxed
times.”

“We became more organised as a family, we understood each others needs
due to the family rules - for example, we don‟t shout, we listen to each other.
I am confident as a parent and most of all happy as a family! Thank you.”

“The group has been a great help. I was cynical about the course before I
joined but soon grew to being part of a team. Great group. Great course.

Know IT all
     For parents

A guide to getting the most out of the internet and keeping children safe
online. Information and help in safe use of the Internet. Copies of the CD
can be found at your school.

http://www.childnet-int.org/kia/

Know IT All is a set of award-winning resources developed by children‟s
internet charity Childnet International to help educate both young people,
parents and teachers about safe and positive use of the internet.

Currently there are 4 main KIA resources for Parents, Teachers, Trainees
and Volunteers.

Know IT All for parents contains advice for parents and carers, and a
special section for children and young people.

Know IT All for trainee teachers is aimed at trainee teachers entering the
teaching profession to help them understand the e-safety issues for students.

Know IT All for teachers has been produced for teachers in secondary
schools and includes a video introduction to the issues.

Getting to Know IT All was a special presentation designed for volunteers to
deliver in schools. The programme was piloted in 2005 and has now been
updated and rolled out by CEOP, (Child Exploitation Online Protection
Centre) as part of their education programme called Thinkuknow.
