1.) As for CPU vs. chipset compatibility, note that at the motherboard level there are other factors beyond
just the socket flavour and FSB clock: the CPU Voltage Regulator Module's maximum output power (vs.
CPU TDP), the VRM's range of output voltages (the CPU at hand has to fit in with its "VID" = Voltage ID),
and last but not least the motherboard's BIOS version has to "know" the CPU (it often happens that later
CPU's don't work well with an old BIOS, even though the hardware is perfectly compatible).
For instance: when Intel 945 and 965 chipsets were introduced, only a handful of 65nm Core2 Duo (Conroe)
CPU's were available. Later on, various Celerons and Pentia with the same core popped up. Even later, Intel
introduced the 45nm family (Wolfdale core), with some lower-end models (E7x00) still featuring a 1066MHz
FSB - technically compatible with the old i945/i965 chipsets, very nice power consumption, but no go without
a fresh BIOS update, for a motherboard several years old.
2.) TDP = Total Design Power = not the actual maximum or average consumption.
TDP traditionally means an "envelope": the total sum of all the CPU subsystems' maximum consumption, if
all of them were active at once (which they never are). Imagine a CPU with epilepsia. In reality, the CPU
should consume less, potentially much less when idle. Besides the individual systems being idle, depending
on load, the "mobile" CPU's traditionally have deeper power saving mechanisms in place, newer-generation
CPU's are getting better at that (the Intel 45nm process being a significantly "deeper saver" than the 65nm
generation, for instance).
Some say that with recent CPU generations from various vendors, TDP actually means Typical power -
doesn't seem very likely though.
Note that there are "families" of CPU's with similar product names (processor numbers), with the same
nominal TDP, the only difference between them being the CPU core clock. Note that although consumption
may vary between individual pieces even at the same clock rate, or that a slower CPU can eat the same
power as a faster sibling, generally the lower-clocked members of a family take
less power and produce less heat. Such as, the E7200 in practice ran significantly cooler than
an E7600.

1.) As for CPU vs. chipset compatibility, note that at the motherboard level there are other factors
beyond just the socket flavour and FSB clock: the CPU Voltage Regulator Module's maximum output
power (vs. CPU TDP), the VRM's range of output voltages (the CPU at hand has to fit in with its "VID" =
Voltage ID), and last but not least the motherboard's BIOS version has to "know" the CPU (it often
happens that later CPU's don't work well with an old BIOS, even though the hardware is perfectly
compatible).
For instance, I'd be careful when trying to integrate a Penryn CPU with an old i945M/965M motherboard
(originally launched with Merom CPU's). It's not that the motherboard could burn, it merely might refuse
to work with the significantly younger CPU. Check for a BIOS update.
Also, with Mobile and Embedded platforms (fanless or not), you should always pay attention to heat
dissipation - be careful about what CPU you cram into that tiny gadget.

2.) TDP = Total Design Power = not the actual maximum or average consumption.
TDP traditionally means an "envelope": the total sum of all the CPU subsystems' maximum consumption,
if all of them were active at once (which they never are). Imagine a CPU with epilepsia. In reality, the
CPU should consume less, potentially much less when idle. Besides the individual systems being idle,
depending on load, the "mobile" CPU's traditionally have deeper power saving mechanisms in place,
newer-generation CPU's are getting better at that (the Intel 45nm process being a significantly "deeper
saver" than the 65nm generation, for instance).
Some say that with recent CPU generations from various vendors, TDP actually means Typical power -
doesn't seem very likely though.
Note that there are "families" of CPU's with similar product names (processor numbers), with the same
nominal TDP, the only difference between them being the CPU core clock. Note that although
consumption may vary between individual pieces even at the same clock rate, or that a slower CPU can
eat the same power as a faster sibling, generally the lower-clocked members of a family take
less power and produce less heat. Such as, the E7200 in practice ran significantly cooler than
an E7600.


3.) Packages/sockets:
PGA = Pin Grid Array = field-replaceable CPU (ZIF-style socket on the motherboard)
BGA = Ball Grid Array = CPU soldered onboard, using little balls of tin. No way to replace that outside
the factory, or outside a rather specialized soldering workplace. Practical implication: if you have a board
with a BGA CPU, you don't have to care about CPU vs. chipset compatibility :-)

It seems that in the mobile+embedded world, the PGA478 has been a very popular socket for anything
from the P3 Tualatins to the Core2 Quad Penryns. The pinouts are not necessarily/entirely compatible,
but it's probably assumed that in those computers, the CPU's won't be inserted/upgraded by illiterate
folks, therefore compatibility boundaries are not enforced mechanically.There have been some minor
mechanical updates of the socket, but for the most part the various uFCPGA, PPGA etc. slightly differing
descriptions refer to the same outer mechanical dimensions.
