COURSE AIMS

The course will analyse the phonetic and phonological characteristics of the
various Spanish-speaking areas, as well as the prosody and intonation, with the aim
of developing the student’s ability to distinguish the diatopic and diastratical
variation of Spanish.

COURSE CONTENT

The Spanish vowel and consonant system; syllabification, accentuation,
neutralization of opposites, seseo, ceceo, yeísmo, rehilamiento, rhotacism,
lambdacism, variations in the pronunciation of some consonant, prosody and
intonation groups.

COMPULSORY TEXTS
The compulsory reading list will be communicated at the start of the course along with further
   information on the reading list.

TEACHING METHOD
    Classroom lectures, phonetical transcription exercises, lab activities.

ASSESSMENT METHOD
    The exam is made up of a theory part, to be taken using Blackboard, and a practical part,
consisting of a phonetical transcription and an utterance and an oral quiz on the compulsory
reading list.

NOTES
    The student must have passed the written and the oral language exams (which can be
taken in any order) set for the corresponding course year to qualify for the Spanish
Language 1 (Language and Phonology) exam.
