					Discourse analysis and
conversation analysis
 Aims and objectives
 To discuss the key characteristics of DA and
    CA
 To discuss how these approaches differ to
    other qualitative approaches previously
    encountered
 To have an opportunity to conduct some
    analysis!
 To reflect on what these approaches offer for
    research and practice
What can you expect from
today?
 You will not leave today as a discourse or
    conversation analyst 
 Learning is dependant upon engagement
 You will have lots of unanswered questions –
further work is needed to complete your
    understanding
 You won’t get everything ‘right’ and that’s
    OK.
Structure of this morning’s
session
 First 30 minutes working in small
    groups
 Next 30 minutes large group discussion
 20 minute break
 45 minutes working on small group task
 30 minutes presenting / discussing with
    whole group
In small groups…
 From your reading…. What do you think DA and CA
are, and what is the relationship between them?
 What are the key features of each approach? (Try and list
        and define them!)
 How do the tenets of these approaches contrast with what
you already know about qualitative research (e.g. IPA?)
 Has your reading on these topics challenged any of your
assumptions? (Cast your minds back to earlier sessions on
        epistemology)
 Is there anything you don’t understand about these
approaches? Does discussion with your peers make this
        clearer?
Large group feedback
 What are the key features of DA?
 What are the key features of CA?
 How do they differ from other approaches
    you’ve previously encountered?
 Is there anything you don’t understand about
    either approach?
 What type of clinically relevant research
questions might these approaches be useful
    for?
