Chapter 3
1) There are many different types of software that are classified as business
software. For instance, there is word processing software. This kind of software
allows users to create and manipulate documents containing mostly text and
sometimes graphics. There is also spreadsheet software, which allows users to
organize data in rows and columns and perform calculations on that data. Database
software is also on this list, which is application software that allows users to create,
access, and manage a database. There is also accounting software which can help
companies record and report their financial transactions. Lastly there is document
management software, which provides a means for sharing, distributing, and
searching through documents by converting them into a format that can be viewed by
any user. There are still many other different types of software available, such as
Graphics and multimedia software. For instance, there is computer-aided design
software which is a sophisticated type of application software that assists a
professional user in creating engineering, architectural, and scientific designs. Also,
there is desktop publishing software which enables designers to create documents that
contain text, graphics, and many colors. There is also software application programs
designed for educational purposes. Programs of this type consist of paint/image
editing software, photo editing software, and also reference and educational software.
Educational software is that which teaches a particular skill. Finally, there are
software programs that are available for communications. Programs such as email,
FTP, web browsers, chat rooms, and also video conferencing and telephone calls.
This type of software is helpful when a meeting or conversation needs to take place
when people are geographically separated. Programs like these require things such as
microphones, speakers, and sometimes video cameras.
2) A web application is applications software that exists on a website. Users
access web applications anywhere from any computer or device, as long as it has an
internet connection. Web applications usually store users’ data and information on
their servers.
3) Stand alone utility programs are those that can be purchased, such as a
personal firewall or an antivirus program. An antivirus program protects a computer
against viruses by identifying and removing any computer viruses found in memory
or in incoming files. A personal firewall detects and protects a personal computer
from unauthorized intrusions. Finally a spyware remover detects and deletes spyware
on your computer.
4) There are seven types of communication software listed by the book and
they include: Email, where messages and files are sent via a network such as the
internet. There is also FTP, which is a method of uploading and downloading files
with other computers on the internet. Web browsers are another, which allows users
to access and view web pages on the internet. Video conferencing software is helpful
when a meeting or conversation needs to take place when people are geographically
separated. Programs like these require things such as microphones, speakers, and
sometimes video cameras. In addition, there are newsgroups and message boards
which are online areas where users have written discussions. Also included are chat
rooms which are real-time, online typed conversation. In accordance with chat rooms
is instant messaging, which is a real-time exchange of messages, files, audio, and
video. Lastly, there is blogging, which are time stamped articles in a journal format.
5) I believe honestly that there should be no penalty for copying anything. I
feel this way because, honestly some people (not companies) can not in anyway shape
or form afford things such a software that can sometimes cost a great deal of money.
I believe that for the individual that the excuses given in the article are real, but for
companies that make millions upon millions of dollars a year, this is not acceptable.
That is precisely my counter, they make so much money and can’t buy software
applications, give me a break. I have copied software illegally. I copied Microsoft
office onto my new computer because it did not come pre installed, and I could not
afford to buy the programs somewhere.
6) There are slight differences between shareware, freeware, and public-
domain software. Such that, shareware is copyrighted software that is distributed at
no cost for a trail period. Whereas, freeware is copyrighted software provided at no
cost by an individual or company that retains all rights to the software. Lastly, public
domain software is software that has been donated for public use and has no
copyright restrictions.
