					           The University’s Teaching & Learning Programme for New Academic Staff

                             Supporting a Case for Partial or Full Exemption
                            Guidance notes for Participants and Heads of Department

The Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (TLHE) Programme is the University’s induction programme for
new academics that seeks to provide a systematic yet flexible orientation to the knowledge, values, understanding
and skills associated with world-class teaching and learning in a research-led university.

The basic ethos of the scheme is to enable participants to become more competent, confident and reflective
university teachers, capable of critically evaluating and developing their own teaching and learning approach in
order to facilitate high quality student learning at the University of Bristol. The programme provides a practical,
work-based and conceptual grounding for participants, by engaging them in the process of enquiry into their own
role as a teacher and facilitator of student learning. Such enquiry is encouraged with reference to both discipline
and inter-disciplinary contexts, and in relation to a diverse student body.

The programme has been designed to meet the needs of new academic teaching staff and is delivered in such a
way that it can be completed in stages. The programme can result in a 60 credit M-level qualification and is
accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

The University now seeks evidence of successful engagement with Modules 1 and 2 as a requirement of
probation for the initial service review (ISR) and successful completion of the core programme is now necessary
for career progression to Senior Lecturer (profile D) for those staff on pathways 1 and 3.

The University recognises that new academics arrive with a variety of teaching experiences, and that new staff
may have engaged with similar programmes elsewhere. It supports exemption from the programme (partial or full)
whenever a valid case can be made by the participant with the support of the Head of Department.

These notes are provided to support those wishing to present a case for exemption. Please NOTE any case for
full/partial exemption is to be taken from your previous experience prior to commencement of
employment with the University of Bristol.

Exemption Criteria
Staff will be deemed new to teaching in HE and will be required to complete the programme at core progression
level unless they have evidence of one of the following:

    a) Successful completion of a similar programme in another HEI that satisfies the UK Professional
       Standards Framework (UK PSF) for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, Standard 2
    or
    b) Registered Practitioner/Fellow status with the Higher Education Academy (HEA), either by completion of
       a similar programme elsewhere or via a personal submission to the HE Academy.
    or
    c) successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or BEd within the last five years
    or
    d) Three or more years’ experience as a Lecturer in a previous HE institution/s over the last five years and
       can provide documented evidence of ALL of the following:
       (i) Design and delivery (i.e. teaching) of individual classes appropriate to the discipline (e.g. lectures,
             tutorials, seminars, labs, workshops, e-learning etc.)
       (ii) Assessment of student work including the setting of assessments, marking and giving feedback to
             students
       (iii) Design of a coherent range or sequence of teaching / student learning events (e.g. module,
             element or equivalent) delivered by themselves
       (iv) Provision of academic and pastoral support to students at different stages of their degree.

        A teaching reference from a previous HE institution attesting to the quality of teaching & management of
        student learning should form part of the evidence for (c) above.
Please note the following:

     Partial exemption or fast-tracking of the programme is possible if only some aspects of exemption can
       be evidenced.

     In ALL cases, claims for full or partial exemption should have the written support of the Head of
        Department concerned, who should complete the relevant form and submit a covering letter.

     Documentary evidence will need to be provided. The following list is not exhaustive, but is indicative of
       the kind of evidence sought:

            o   A certificate of completion of a similar programme at another HEI;
            o   A letter or certificate from the HE Academy attesting to Fellow status;
            o   A teaching reference from a previous HE employment;
            o A transcript of all teaching-related activities undertaken that details, e.g. the range, level and
                modes of teaching experience, the nature of tutorial support and whether pastoral, academic
                or both;
            o Descriptions and examples of successful design activities (e.g. individual lectures, lecture
                series, programmes of study, support of student learning);
            o   Student feedback and/or examiners’ reports attesting to the above;
            o Descriptions and examples of sound assessment, marking and feedback activities (e.g.
                feedback sheet commentaries, innovative assessment practices that the participant has
                introduced);

Further information will be made available on the website and a pro-forma will be provided.
