- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Oscar Grant’s Killer Released From Jail: District Attorney Engaged in Cover-up BAMN Launches Independent Public Tribunal CONTACT: Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration, and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) - Yvette Felarca, Northern California BAMN Organizer (510) 502-9072, Ronald Cruz (510) 501-2435 Students and community members are outraged by the release of Oscar Grant’s killer, ex- BART Officer Johannes Mehserle, and the continuing cover-up by District Attorney Tom Orloff, who did not even move to oppose Mehserle’s granting of bail on January 30. BAMN is launching an independent public tribunal that will convene a series of public hearings to establish the truth about what happened regarding Oscar Grant’s killing on New Year’s night. “Mehserle’s release is a travesty of justice, which District Attorney Tom Orloff was completely happy to allow happen,” said Yvette Felarca, Northern California coordinator of the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration, and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN). “It is Orloff’s aim to allow BART Officers Johannes Mehserle and Tony Pirone get away with murder. We demand that Orloff press charges against Pirone, who struck Grant to the ground, pinned Grant down as he was shot, and ordered the handcuffing of Grant immediately after the shooting in an effort to cover up the crime. Pirone was an accessory to murder.” "Mayor Ron Dellums has got to break his silence, and make clear he seeks justice for Oscar Grant and is prepared to defend black and Latino youth of Oakland against police terror, brutality, and murder," said Issamar Camacho, a UC-Berkeley student and BAMN organizer. "Dellums must speak out against the handling of the investigation and prosecution of this case." “BAMN will convene an independent, public hearing for the community to gather witnesses and evidence to investigate what actually happened on New Year’s night,” said Ronald Cruz, Berkeley Law student and BAMN organizer. BAMN will announce the date of the first public hearing soon. The protesters have launched a mass petition campaign demanding: (1) jail all the killer cops, (2) disarm the BART police and keep BART police out of Oakland, (3) open an independent public investigation in place of BART’s present cover-up, and (4) drop all the charges against protesters.
