      Teri Koning
        Objectives:
• Describe
  minerals and
  identify some
  of their
  characteristics
• List several
  ways that
  minerals are
  used
             Minerals
• inorganic
• naturally occurring
• solid material
• definite chemical composition
• atoms arranged in specific
    patterns
Minerals

     • Minerals can be
       either elements
       or compounds
     • Minerals make
       up rocks of the
       lithosphere
                Ores
• Ores- rocks that
  contain large
  amounts of
  economically
  desirable minerals
• often minerals that
  form under similar
  conditions occur
  together
          Uses of Metals &
             Nonmetals
• Most metals occur in nature
  as metallic ores. These ores
  must be heated and refined
  to extract the desired metal.
• The process is called
  smelting, which was made
  possible by the invention of
  the blast furnace.
• Metals have several
  properties that make them
  important to technology &
  industry.
Some Minerals and Their Common Uses
  Mineral Uses
Copper Electric wiring, water pipes
Aluminum Packaging for food and beverages, airplanes
Lead Car batteries, paint
Gypsum Concrete, wallboards
Iron Automobiles, construction
Silicon Windows, microprocessors
Gold Electronics, aerospace, jewelry
Silver Photography, jewelry
Sulfur Batteries
       Ductile & Malleable
• Ductile- able to be
  pulled or stretched
  into wires
• Malleable- able to be
  hammered and
  shaped without
  breaking
• Nonmetallic ores are
  also useful.
   Minerals in International
            Trade
• Metals and other
  minerals are
  crucial to
  economic and
  technological
  development
