1. Route 10 freeway east to Banning, CA (elev. 2,400 ft)
     (80 miles east from Pasadena)
2. Exit 8th Street / Route 243 / Idyllwild, go south 16 miles
(curvy mountain road, gains 3,000 ft, allow 30 mins).
3. Watch for Fulmer Lake on your left, then go 1 more mile.
4. Turn left onto Black Mountain Road (NF-4S01), 8 miles to Trailhead.
(dirt road, clearances uncertain, gains 2400 ft., allow 30-40 mins)

Why climb this route?
The North face of Mt. San Jacinto plunges 8,000 feet in only 5 miles, one of
the steepest rock escarpments in the continental United States. From heavily
forested Fuller Ridge you have spectacular views east, out over the north
face, plus views northward of Mt. San Gorgonio (elev: 11,500) the highest
peak in Southern California. When you hike from the Palm Springs Tram,
you see 6,000 feet of rock cliff under the Tram, but then you start at 8,500 ft.,
climb with the crowd, and you miss all of the north face scenery.
That’s why the Fuller Ridge Trail was selected to be part of the Pacific Crest
Trail, which goes 2,600 miles from Mexico to Canada.
Also, for high mountain training purposes, you are spending 8+ hours
working at elevations above 8,000 feet. Mt. San Jacinto from Fuller Ridge, which curves around to the right.
