Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Lesson Plan 2 (Scales) Aim To recognise and use familiar metric units To use measure using simple scales Learning Outcomes At the end of the session, the learner will be able to: - reinforce finding missing numbers in sequences of numbers - use simple scales to measure to the nearest labelled division - know common metric units of measure for length, weight, capacity and temperature - estimate values of measurements of everyday items in length, weight, capacity and temperature Aspirations - For learners to feel confident about using simple scales to measure with - For learners to gain some understanding of what grams, kilograms, litres, centimetres, metres and degrees Centigrade are used for DIFFERENTIATION: MUST participate in first two activities (be able to find at least five missing numbers in Activity 1 and identify at least three correct measurements in Activity 2) SHOULD find all the missing responses in Activities 1 and 2 COULD start to appreciate what length/ weight / capacity/ temperatures of everyday items are likely to be RESOURCES: Cards for Activities 1, 2 and 3, mini whiteboards, marker pens, flipchart paper, glue sticks, calculators, rulers, measuring tapes, simple measuring jug, item to measure which is an exact number of cm less than 30cm, item to measure which has a length equalling a multiple of 10cm, amount of liquid to measure which has a capacity measureable to nearest labelled division Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 1 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Lesson Plan 2 (Scales) Functional Skills Differentiation and extension strategies Coverage and range: Recognise and use familiar measures Pair work and small group work, differentiated activities Recognise sequences of numbers Use simple scales and measures to the nearest labelled division. Process: Sorting out which pieces of information are needed Disregarding irrelevant information Thinking through a plan for solving a problem Selecting appropriate mathematical procedures to solve a problem Applying mathematical procedures correctly Laying out work clearly Choosing how to check answers Communicating solutions to problems, either verbally or by writing down them down so that they make sense Deciding how solutions inform a recommendation Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 2 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Lesson Plan 2 (Scales) Time Stage of Tutor Input Learner Input Evidence of Resources Lesson Learning 5mins Introduction Introduces theme of session: getting the best deals Listens and responds as when shopping required Outlines activity 10mins Consolidation Recaps finding missing numbers in sequences: Listens and asks Successfully Whiteboard of pre-requisite e.g. Finding missing numbers in questions answers Or interactive skills - 8, 10, …, 14, 16 Completes questions in questions whiteboard pairs on mini verbally and Mini whiteboards - 10, 15, … , 20, 25 whiteboards completes Marker pens questions on mini whiteboards 15mins Start of group Introduces the context of the activity: In pairs or small Successfully Activity 1 cards activity - Organises class into pairs or small groups groups: Discusses completes at Calculators which answer cards least ten missing - gives out cards in Activity 1 and calculators belong to which scale measurements Asks groups to work together to find missing numbers cards in the scale cards Writes in missing Ask groups to then choose their answers from the measurements in scale answer cards in Activity 1 cards Use open questions to expose any misconceptions Compare answers between groups Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 3 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Lesson Plan 2 (Scales) 20mins Introduction of Leads discussion on what types of scales there are: e.g. Listens and responds as Successfully Whiteboard or measuring what do ‘grammes’ or ‘centimetres’ mean? Etc. Where required measures at least interactive scales do you see scales like this in real life? one item to whiteboard Familiarises learners with language of common metric nearest labelled Measuring jug units division with liquid Rulers Draws a simple scale with labelled divisions on Measuring tapes whiteboard/interactive whiteboard: uses it to Items to measure demonstate reading values where pointer is exactly on labelled division and close to labelled division Monitors groups measuring length of items with ruler/ Takes it in turns to tape measure or capacity of liquid in measuring jug measure length of items or capacity of liquid 15mins Continuation of Introduces Activity 2: Asks and responds to Successfully Activity 2 cards group activity - ask groups to paste each scale card on a piece of questions about finds Flipchart paper flipchart paper content of tables, measurements Glue sticks meaning of words etc for at least four - ask them to decide what the reading on each scale scales is - ask them to choose appropriate cards to show the readings they have decided upon and to glue these near to the scales on the flipchart paper Use open questions to help develop understanding (DIFFERENTIATION: there are multiple answer cards available to enable learners at higher levels to e.g. choose 49 rather than 50) Displays posters Canvasses readings between different groups. Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 4 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Lesson Plan 2 (Scales) 15mins Completion of Introduces Activity 3: In pairs or small Successfully Activity 3 cards the group - lead discussion on what units learners use to groups: Discusses completes Measuring tape activity measure their weight or height in which items belong to matches on - ask what a likely height may be for an adult in which measurements posters metres/ what a likely weight may be for adults in Pastes items onto kilogrammes poster by their appropriate scales - confirm height with measuring tape - give out cards in Activity 3 Gives and receives - ask groups to use the cards to decide which items feedback: explains why they have measured in Activity 2 they have chosen particular items for Lead discussion on decisions made by different groups: particular use discussion to expose misconceptions measurements 10mins Evaluation of Leads discussion using questions such as: Presents flipchart Shares posters Flipchart posters the activity presentations with whole group from each group - how do your decisions compare? Talks about decisions Gives feedback made and why on the activity - Which parts of today’s activity were more difficult? Talks about the activity: Collects feedback on how the learners felt - How it felt to work participating in the activity in a pair or group Reviews of aims and closes session - How it felt to learn by discussing the problem together Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 5 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 1 (Scales) Activity one Find the missing measurements on these scales Write the missing measurements in the boxes 10 20 40 60 70 kilogramme s 22 24 26 27 centimetre 40 50 60 65 metre gramme s 20 24 28 Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 6 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 1 (Scales) litres 38 36 Degrees Centigrade 46 38 34 Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 7 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 1 (Scales) Degrees Centigrade 50 40 30 Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 8 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 1 (Scales) CARDS TO MATCH WITH (Activity one) 18 35 22 40 23 42 25 42 26 45 28 45 30 50 30 50 Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 9 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 1 (Scales) 30 55 34 55 Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 10 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 2 (Scales) Activity two Read what the measurements are on the scale cards Match the scale cards to the correct measurement cards (there are more measurement cards than you need!) 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 kilogramme s 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 centimetre 40 45 50 55 60 65 metre Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 11 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 2 (Scales) gramme s 18 20 22 24 26 28 30 litres 42 40 38 36 34 Do set of matchining cards next and send to su, then set 3 poss objects Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 12 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 2 (Scales) Degrees Centigrade 40 38 36 34 32 30 Degrees Centigrade 55 50 45 40 35 30 Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 13 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 2 (Scales) CARDS TO MATCH WITH (Activity two) 60 26 59 49 50 22 42 38 55 21 41 Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 14 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 3 (Scales) Activity three Weight of Height of door woman Width of Weight of car tablet Weight of Weight of baby small bag of crisps Length of piece Weight of a of paper tablet Amount of Length of petrol in the swimming pool tank of a car Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 15 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday) Functional Skills Mathematics: Entry Level 2 – Activity 3 (Scales) Amount of lemonade in a large bottle Amount of coke in a can Normal body temperature Temperature on a warm sunny day in England Temperature of a cup of hot coffee Functional Skills – Entry Level 2 (2010/2011) 16 Mathematics Sample Lesson Plan 5 (Holiday)
