?he Acekard 2i is the first DSi card to be released on the market - it was on the market
even before the R4i SDHC card was released. It was created by the Acekard Team for
the Nintendo DSi but is also backwards compatible with the Nintendo DS and
Nintendo DS Lite.
Released in 2009, its firmware is constantly updated very frequently. There are two
versions of the firmware; the official firwmare released by the Acekard team and the
unofficial firmware known as AKAIO which is accepted by the Nintendo DS
homebrew community. From internal tests, NDS-Gear believes that the AKAIO
firmware is far superior to the original firmware and allows the card to load
significantly faster as well. The unofficial firmware is also updated extremely
frequently, which is a testament to the dedication of their development team. The
NDS-Gear team use the AKAIO firmware and have it available for download on the
Acekard 2i firmware download page.
However, the official firmware is also the first DS / DSi card firmware in the world to
be completely open source - they should be applauded for this fantastic effort.
The Acekard2i 's 'Quick Exchange' technology allows quick file transfer between the
Micro-SD card and the internal NAND memory, which functions like RAM when
games are being played and applications are being used on the cartridge. The built in
"Auto Save Type Detection" is able to detect the save type of up to 99% of software
(at this stage we still haven't found any software saves that the Acekard R.P.G. can't
detect.). In summary, the Ak2i does not completely rely on free space inside the
Micro-SD card to shuffle files around and store data temporarily. For this reason, it
makes the loading process and general usage of the card incredibly quick and rather
The manufacturing process and the dimensional controls of the Acekard 2i are pretty
decent, although not as perfect as some of the best cards on the market. It is certainly
nothing that a human would be able to discern with the naked eye. Occasionally, an
Acekard 2i is slightly larger in depth and may have difficulty fitting into a Nintendo
DS Lite console, for example, but should have no problems with a DSi. Even so, this
problem only appears to be an issue with less than 1% of cards, and if your Acekard is
bought from a reputable retailer such as NDS-Gear who tests all their cards
beforehand, it is not an issue at all. It's worth noting that the Acekard2i is backwards
compatible with the regular Nintendo DS as well as the Nintendo DS Lite. It is,
however, made to be compatible with Nintendo's newer consoles, the Nintendo DSi
and DSi XL.
The Acekard2i is the world's first flash cart which has an inbuilt 'trimming' function
built in. When you copy a file between the Micro SD and NAND internal flash
memory, the card will automatically trim any un-necessary data so that the maximum
amount of space is once again available.
The Ak2i uses a spring mechanism to load the Micro-SD card slot which is
occasionally frowned upon by the community as being less reliable than a standard
push slot. About 2-3% of Acekard 2i's will have a small problem with the spring but
buying the card from any reliable retailer such as NDS-Gear - us! - who tests all their
cards beforehand, should mean there are no issues with any card bought.
Overall, the build quality of the Acekard 2i is good, and has an exceptional
development team behind it, making it one of the biggest selling Nintendo DSi cards
It's possible to design your own Acekard skins and change them at will. All the
pictures, buttons, text, and even their coordinates can be customised. You simply copy
the folder of skins to "/__rpg/ui/" and enable it from 'System Options' in the settings
The Acekard2i supports Action Replay codes and you should be able to use all official
codes to date - and in some cases, even cheat databases from other flash cards. Finally,
the Ak2i supports soft-reset in running. You can return to the Acekard menu when
you're running software or games, without needing to turn off the DS. You can disable
this function in the Acekard 2i's menu.
