June25, 2009 DearRepresentative: The AFL-CIO supportsclimatechangelegislationthatwill createneweconomic opportunitiesandpreserve existingjobs while achievingthe importantobjectivesof reducing greenhouse emissions reducingour dependence foreign energy. The AmericanClean gas and on Energyand SecurityAct of 2009,thoughnot perfect,represents importantfirst steptoward an achievingthesegoals,andwe urge a yesvote. The AmericanCleanEnergyand SecurityAct maintainsa diverseenergyportfolio that includesrenewable energy,fossil fuels, andnuclearandhydro power,while spurringeconomic investmentin new energytechnologies will create that jobs for Americanworkers. At the same time, the bill imposesan economy-wide carbonreductionprogramand seeks minimize the burden to on anyone sector. We believethe AmericanCleanEnergyand SecurityAct could be improvedfurther. For example,we will work to strengthen internationalcompetitiveness its provisions.
