Corps Assists with New Panama Canal Lock
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District in Mobile, Alabama, has been asked by the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) to provide the concept design for a new lock on the Atlantic side to enable new, large ships to use the Canal. The PCA has also issued an international request for design proposals for the new Pacific Lock. The United States retains a significant interest in the continued efficient operation of the Canal, and assists Panamanian authorities with their efforts to improve the Canal's operation and maintenance. While the PCA will look to worldwide sources for engineering and technology, they have indicated a desire to keep the American engineering community involved in the design of the Canal expansion and believe the best way to do this is through Corps of Engineers involvement. This program offers the potential for engineering and construction work for the U.S. business community. Mobile District is responsible for managing all Corps of Engineers work associated with the Panama Canal Authority. The Project Manager is Leo Cain, (334) 690-3440. All matters concerning work for the PCA will be coordinated through him. The Corps of Engineers already supports the PCA with water supplies for canal operations, geotechnical assessments and environmental evaluations.
