NCTE/ScoilNet Web Hosting & Domain Registration Service
As part of the ScoilNet initiative, the NCTE offers the following free services for educational organisations in Ireland:
q q
Website Hosting Registration and Hosting of .ie domain names
This facility is provided primarily for educational organisations in Ireland. Certain s chools and other organisations (such as those involved in specific ICT initiatives or with websites on specific educational topics) may be accepted at the discretion of the NCTE. Website Hosting If you wish to host your website on the NCTE server, you must complete and submit the attached application form to the NCTE. Alternatively, you can complete the form on-line at www.ncte.ie/hosting . The NCTE will provide you with an FTP acc ount with up to 25MB of space and instructions on using the server. Your web site address (URL) will be in the format www.ncte.ie/name. Additional information on creating and uploading a website is available on the NCTE website at www.ncte.ie/hosting .
Transfer your existing website to the NCTE If you have an existing website which you would like to transfer to the NCTE server, firstly you should follow the procedures for Website Hosting above. When you have been allocated your web space on the NCTE serve r, you should download your website from it’s existing location and then upload it to the NCTE server. As the URL of your new web space will be different from your old site, you can upload a simple web page, which will automatically re-direct users to your new site. To get a sample re-direct page, email sysadmin@ncte.ie.
Domain Name Registration and Hosting New Domain Names If you would like your own unique domain name for your website, then the NCTE can provide this service free of change. Just complete and submit the attached form to the NCTE, paying particular attention to section B). Note that you will need to apply for web hosting also in order for the NCTE to host your domain name. You should ensure that your chosen domain name is not currently re gistered (i.e. used by another organisation) by checking the Alphabetic Domain Listings at http://www.domainregistry.ie/statistics/dom_list.html or the Domain Name Search at http://www.domainregistry.ie/search/index.html. In order to complete your application, the NCTE will require documentary support in the form of a letter printed on your organisation’s letterhead paper. This letter should be addressed to Seán Dower, Systems Administrator, NCTE and must state: q q q the nature of your organisation/ project; that it is an educational organisation (include information such as acts of establishment, where applicable); that you wish the domain name “domain.ie” (where domain.ie is the requested domain name without the prefix “www”) to be registered on behalf of your organisation and

that you are entitled to register this domain in your organisation’s name.
This letter must be signed by the head of your organisation and, along with the application form should be sent to the NCTE for the attention of the Systems Administrator. Letters can be sent by fax to 01 700 8210 or by email (as an attachment) to sysadmin@ncte.ie. Once your application has been submitted, you should await a response from the NCTE either indicating acceptance or detailing any problems w ith the application. Please Note: q q q Applications take an average of 1 -2 weeks to be processed. Applications that are malformed, incomplete or missing required documentation will experience delays. Leaving domain registration to the last minute is highly inadvisable, as is making use of a domain name (including the proposed domain name on company stationery, for example) before the NCTE has confirmed acceptance and registration. The IE Domain Registry imposes restrictions on the use of some domain names. Please ensure that the name you choose is applicable to your organisation/ project.
q
Existing Domain Names If you have an existing Domain Name that you wish the NCTE to host then you should complete and submit the attached form to the NCTE, paying particular attention to section C). Note that you will need to apply for web hosting also in order for the NCTE to host your domain name. In order to host your existing domain name, the NCTE will need to liase with your existing service provider (i.e. the o rganisation that is currently hosting your domain name). Also, as you are the owner of the existing domain name, the NCTE will require a letter of consent, addressed to the “IE Domain Registry” authorising the NCTE to act on your behalf. This will allow the NCTE to liase with your existing service provider and the IE Domain Registry to instruct them to change the delegated nameservers so that the hosting of your domain name can be transferred to the NCTE. The Letter of Consent should be: q q q printed on letterhead paper; addressed to the Systems Administrator, NCTE and signed by the head of your organisation
