									             Sample Work Experience Diary
Monday 26th November

When I arrived in my work place I was a bit nervous but the nerves soo n disappeared
because the staff were so nice and friendly. It was a busy first morning especially where
reception duties were concerned. In the afternoon I was involved in IT duties basically
checking that all ten computers were up to date with antivirus protection and that all
patches from Symantec were downloaded. Out of the ten only three needed their updates
to be downloaded. On one computer Real Time Player had to be updated and on another
Adobe 7.0 had to be updated. The reception duties that I was involved in were the
following. Answering the phone, answering the phone door buzzer, checking and
recording post in and out, writing phone messages, greeting clients and delivering faxes
and post to appropriate name trays. I was also involved in taping and labelling boxes of
leaflets and carrying the boxes to an upstairs office and also carrying boxes out to a staff
members car. So all in all it was a very busy first day but also an enjoyable one. I was
especially pleased to be involved in IT duties. At the end of the day my supervisor said I
done well. I was really pleased about this as I thought I done ok.

Wednesday 28th November

Another busy day at the office especially carrying out reception duties. I was that busy, it
was lunch time all of a sudden. I found myself under a bit of pressure trying to juggle all
the reception tasks. I found it more difficult when there was clients and staff members in
the reception area talking together to each other. At the start of the morning my
supervisor informed myself that she needed a new monitor to be installed in the
afternoon. I was really looking forward to carrying out this task but also a bit nervous.
When the afternoon came I was informed by my supervisor that she had to cancel the IT
task as she had to attend a meeting and that she would like to be present while I was
carrying out this task. I was a bit disappointed about this but also a bit relieved as I lacked
a bit of confidence about carrying out this task. So I spent the afternoon typing this diary
and studying. At the end of the day my supervisor again thanked me for doing a great job
at reception (her words not mine) again I thought I done ok but was delighted my
supervisor was so pleased with me.

Friday 30th November

Another busy day at reception but not as busy as previous days. In the afternoon I was
involved in replacing CRT monitors with flat screen monitors. My Supervisor asked me
beforehand had I installed these monitors before, I was tempted to spoof and say I had
but in the end decided to be honest and explain that I had never installed a flat screen
monitor before. I was glad I decided to be honest because it was so different from the
CRT monitors that the on and off switch was at the back on top of the screen and the
power plug in and connector were under the screen and had be inserted upwards instead
of putting it straight in at the back which was the way it was done with the CRT
monitors. My Supervisor let me watch her install the first one and then let me install the
other one by myself. All went well it was a new and satisfying experience carrying out
this task. I was a tiny bit nervous being left on my own but nothing major. My supervisor
was very pleased about the installation that I carried out. My Supervisor gave me a
Fujitsu tower for myself to take home as earlier I was asking my supervisor what they do
with there old computers. She told me they give them to a charity called “Jack & Jill”. I
explained to her that I like taking computers apart that was when she offered me the
tower which I was really pleased about. So all in all it was a very enjoyable day. My
supervisor also said that I had done very well for my first week which I was very pleased
to hear.

Monday 3rd December

Today was exceptionally busy especially where in post was concerned but that is to be
expected because it is coming close to Christmas. So in the morning I was very busy with
reception duties. In the afternoon my supervisor asked me to sort out old computer stock
of mice, hubs, Ethernet boxes, modems, power connectors etc. I was pleased to be given
an IT job but at the same time wished I was given something more challenging. My
supervisor was very pleased about the work that I done and gave me an old Toshiba
laptop to take home. I was also very pleased about this. So all in all a good day but a busy
one.

Wednesday 5th December

A very busy morning carrying out reception duties but I coped well. I was asked to put
out a lot of bin bags out the back which took a lot out of me physically. I was then asked
to take boxes of decorations out of the store room and bring them downstairs again this
took a lot out of me physically. After lunch I was given the task of sorting out boxes of
DVD’s some which had become damp. I was given the task of taking the damp DVD’s
out of their boxes and putting them in plastic sleeves and then had to carry a lot of boxes
of DVD’s upstairs to reception and then take them out of their boxes and put them in the
press in the reception area. I was very tired and my back was in a lot of pain after
completing this task. I suppose this was due to the fact of my age and the fact that I have
not done physical work since the last two years. My supervisor was very happy with my
day’s work I was happy too but not very happy about doing so much physical work I
would of preferred to of carried out IT tasks.

Friday 7th December

A very busy morning again carrying out reception duties but a gain I performed well. I
was on reception by myself this morning as there were two people out sick. I sold a lot of
Christmas cards while at reception. The Christmas cards are made by the members of the
centre. So an extra duty I had to carry out was to make out receipts and log the Christmas
cards sold on to the Christmas cards list. In the afternoon I was busy sorting out the store
room to make room for new boxes of books. When I had the store room sorted out I had
to then carry the boxes of books upstairs to the store room which took a lot out of me
physically. At the end of the day my supervisor said that I done well especially managing
reception duties on my own. She also gave me a music CD which was part of the boxes
in the store room. So all in all a satisfying day.

Monday 10th December

I was working on my own again today carrying out reception duties. An extra duty that I
had to carry out was to log new members who had paid their membership fee and also log
existing members who had paid their renewal fee. So a very busy day in reception this
morning. In the afternoon I had to go into town to buy boxes of Christmas crackers for
tomorrow nights Christmas party. So all in all a very busy day.

Wednesday 12th December

Another busy day carrying out reception duties. The SI news letter had to be put in large
brown envelopes, two thousand in all had to be posted out to clients. It was a very boring
tedious job doing this. But I accepted this task had to be done. I was involved carrying
out this task all afternoon with other staff members. There was one member of the team
who was not pulling her weight i.e. she was going very slow and going off a few times. I
was tempted to say something to her but my intuition advised me so say nothing as it was
none of my business. It was up to my supervisor to say something not me. By the end of
the day I was very tired and my lower back was in a lot of pain.

Friday 14th December

Again another busy day carrying out reception duties and putting the SI newsletter in
large envelopes. Basically everything was the same as yesterday with added tasks of
franking the envelopes and bringing sacks of envelopes on a trolley to the local post
office which was a ten minute walk away. By the end of the day I was very tired and
again my back was in a lot of pain.

Monday 17th December

Today was basically the same as Friday i.e. carrying out reception duties, putting the SI
newsletter in large envelopes, franking the envelopes and making trips to the post office.
One thing I noticed was that the employee that was not pulling her weight in regarding of
putting the SI news in envelopes was extremely fast at franking the envelopes much
faster than myself and other employees. I learned from another employee that this task
has to be carried out three times a year i.e. the SI newsletter has to be sent out every
quarter.

Wednesday 19th December

I was on my own at reception all day which I did not enjoy. I could not go for a cigarette
or to the toilet when I wanted to. I had to phone upstairs to see if any one was free to
cover reception while I went for a cigarette or to the toilet. I felt uncomfortable asking
this, especially when going to the toilet was concerned. The boss of the department next
door had to cover reception as the other staff members were busy looking after the clients
Christmas party. The boss made a mistake on the phone which caused the phone calls
from our department to go through his department. The boss of the other department tried
to make out it was my mistake which I was having none of and I was very assertive how I
dealt with this challenging situation. I could have explained that he pressed the wrong
department but this individual is ignorant arrogant and does not listen to other people
point of view. So I felt there was no point in explaining to him that it was he who caused
our calls to go through his department. I just said I do not know why this is happening.
Then an employee from our own department was very rude to me about this matter and
told me it has to be my fault that our calls were going through to next door again I was
very assertive with this employee. Eventually my boss rectified the problem and
explained to me that the boss of next doors department had the problem on their phone
and not ours. I was pleased with the outcome but felt a bit annoyed that the boss of next
doors department had tried to blame me on his mistake and that an employee of the
department where I am employed was so rude to me.

Friday 21st December

Again I was on reception duties all day. It was a bit quieter than usual. The day went very
slow because of it being so quiet. Other than that nothing new to report.

Wednesday 2nd January

On reception duties all day. Very busy in reception which was good because the day went
in quick.

Friday 4th January

On reception duties all day due to staff members being out sick.

Monday 7th January

In the morning I was on reception duties. It was very busy but also enjoyable. In the
afternoon I was given the task of producing a list of serial and registration of computers
which were to go to the Jack & Jill Charity Company. The task was enjoyable mainly
because there was an IT involvement.

Wednesday 9th January

I was on reception duties all day due to staff members being out sick. The morning was
very busy. The afternoon was a bit quieter. A manager was having a problem with his
computer at home. He told me that when he was away for a few days. One of his house
mates was using his computer and had gone into a site that sent a virus to his computer
which resulted that each time he went on to the internet his computer would switch off. I
advised him to do the following
    Start
    Settings
    Control Panel
    Internet Options
 Delete History Cookies Delete all
    Still in Control Panel
 Click on Microsoft Updates and make sure all patches have been downloaded

I will not know he got on till I talk to him on Friday. I was very pleased that he asked my
advice but really pleased with myself that I knew the answer in my head.

Friday 11th January

The Staff member that I gave IT advice to on Wednesday was very pleased and grateful
as his home computer is working again. This caused me to be very proud. I was on
reception duties all day. It was a very busy day. A staff member had a run in with the
same manager I had a run in with on the 19th December who worked next door to us. The
staff member was printing out a document and accidentally printed out 64 pages instead
of one. The manager went made as the printer is next door to their office. The manager
upset the staff member so much that he made her cry. I comforted her and advised her to
go and have a cup of tea and a smoke and write a report of what happened and to show
the report to her supervisor on Monday. I felt good in myself and I made the staff
member calm and feel good again.

Monday 14th January

I was on reception duties all morning. It was very busy b ut enjoyable. In the afternoon I
was studying books on mental health issues. As I have applied to work as an advocate
within the company that I am doing work experience with. This position would involve
representing, advising planning and goal setting for people with mental health issues.

Wednesday 16th January

Again another busy morning carrying out reception duties. In the afternoon I was taking
down serial numbers of PCs that were to be sent to the Jack & Jill foundation for
recycling.

Friday 18th January

Today is my last day on work experience. I am a bit sad to go but at the same time
looking forward to more challenging work. In the morning I was busy carrying out
reception duties. In the afternoon a cake was brought into me and all the staff members
were present and they all thanked me and wished me well. I was really pleased with this
kind gesture.
