EXPECTATIONS
Understanding the Task
The “What’s for Lunch” PBL experience is designed to help students use critical and analytical thinking skills as well as decision-making skills to determine the ideal nutritional and tasty lunch menus based on the research they’ve conducted. When designing the menus, the students must carefully consider what constitutes a healthy and nutritional school lunch. They must also conduct research to better understand the Federal Government’s regulations regarding school lunch requirement. Teams must use the results from the survey to determine key information regarding the students’ lunch preferences. Note: Students must carefully analyze the surveys to determine the overall needs of the school. For instance, a team that discovers that the McDonald’s Big Mac is a favorite amongst the students in the school does not have to include the Big Mac in one of the menus. But instead, students may try to find the restaurant and the burger that is a healthier option.
Roles and Responsibilities of Teams
As students work together to complete the task, they will consider their areas of strength in order to determine the roles and responsibilities of each of the members of the group. Students should come to a consensus to determine which member(s) will be primarily responsible for researching, recording, designing, etc.
Roles and Responsibilities of Teacher/Technology Coordinator
Your role will be to work as a facilitator to assist the teams. Review the rubric with the students so that they will understand what is expected. The students should rely less on you and more on their teammates. Students will be responsible for finding the needed information from a variety of sources that include but are not limited to the Internet, textbooks, electronic encyclopedias, etc. You can assist by providing direction and guidance, posing thoughtprovoking questions, and setting pacing guidelines. You may choose to structure time for students to use computers in the classroom (Computer Learning Centers). Lab time is ideal for the entire class to conduct research, brainstorm (perhaps using software such as Inspiration), correspond via ePals to teammates, generate their menus, prepare their presentations, etc.
