FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Freeholder H. James Polos 732-249-2611 Middlesex County Takes Lead in “Green” Initiatives County’s Environmentally Friendly Policies, Programs Praised JANUARY 30, 2007 – Middlesex County has become the first county in the state to make a commitment to creating an environmentally sustainable county. The designation, from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, means Middlesex County is the first county to be creating a County that manages its natural resources and environmental assets to preserve, restore and enhance their value for present and future generations while complementing the County's economic and social health. “I believe that here in Middlesex County, by working closely with our local partners, we can have a significant impact on sustainability and using technology that will have a real impact on global warming,” said Freeholder H. James Polos, chair of the County’s Public Works and Transportation Committee. Polos spearheaded a number of the County’s environmental and energy efficiency programs. “The Federal Administration has failed to exercise the initiatives and technologies to combat global warming and foster sustainability. We in Middlesex County are at the cutting edge of these issues, and together with our local partners, will have a great, positive impact now and in the future,” Polos said. State Sen. Robert G. Smith agreed: “A sustainable society requires government to lead the way by “operating green” and showing the way for its citizens to live and work in a sustainable economy.” --MORE-- Middlesex County Takes Lead in “Green” Initiatives Page 2 The NJ DEP has lauded the County’s environmental and energy efficiency programs and policies and has used Middlesex County as a role model for the State’s other counties. The DEP and New Jersey Board of Public Utilities entered into a unique partnership with Middlesex County, known as the Middlesex County Showroom of Environmental Technology (MCSET) As a “Showroom,” the County uses existing programs as models for its municipalities and creates countywide training programs and trade shows for new technology and equipment. It also provides information on available state grants and funding. “As a Showroom and because of our partnership with the DEP and the BPU, we are in the ideal position to help our municipalities with their green initiatives and sustainability,” Polos said. As an outgrowth of MCSET, the Board of Chosen Freeholders approved a $50,000 grant program in September to encourage municipalities to go “green.” Half of the fund is being used to encourage “green” building construction. The remaining $25,000 funds a grant program to encourage municipalities to purchase hybrid vehicles for their fleets. Middlesex County has 30 hybrid vehicles in its fleet, the largest hybrid fleet in the state. Old Bridge Township is the first municipality to take advantage of the hybrid cars grant. The grant awards $500 for each vehicle, with a maximum two grants per town. Old Bridge used the $1,000 toward the purchase of two 2006 Honda Civic Hybrids. “We are proud to be the first municipality to partner with the County in this grant program,” said Old Bridge Mayor James T. Phillips. “It’s in everyone’s best interest to protect the environment.” North Brunswick and Woodbridge townships also have purchased two hybrid vehicles each and are applying for the MCSET grant. “These programs not only foster sustainability and green initiatives, but also work toward reducing our dependence on foreign oil,” Polos said. “We are, in a sense, boosting our Homeland Security efforts.”  Among Middlesex County’s sustainability initiatives are: Common Cents, cooperative purchasing program, which utilizes the county’s buying power to assist municipalities in reducing their costs for good and services, including natural gas, electricity, equipment, services and supplies. --MORE-- Middlesex County Takes Lead in “Green” Initiatives Page 3     Curbside Recycling Program, operated by the Middlesex County Improvement Authority, which collects co-mingled recyclables for 16 towns throughout the County. The county is consistently among the top recycling counties in the state. Middlesex County Area Transit Shuttles (MCAT), which provide fixed route, economical service for senior citizens, individuals with disabilities and the general public. Open Space Program, through which the County can purchase outright, or work with municipalities and the state, to purchase and preserve open lands. As an outgrowth of this, the County established the Conservation Corps, made up of students and volunteers, who maintain and protect the land already in the Open Space Program. Solar panels to be installed at the Cooperative Extension Building in North Brunswick. --30--
