Before returning the unit to the user, perform the following safety checks:

   Plug the power cord directly into a 120-volt AC                                    lOW
   receptacle (do not use an Isolation Transformer for
   this test). Using two clip leads, connect a 1500 Ohm,
   10-watt resistor paralleled by a 0.15 IJ.Fcapacitor, in
   series with all exposed metal cabinet parts and a
   known earth ground, such as a water pipe or con-
   duit. Use a VTVM or VOM with 1000 Ohms per volt,                                  O.IS"F
   or higher sensitivity to measure the AC voltage drop
   across the resistor. (See Diagram.) Move the resis-                 TEST PROBE
   tor connection to each exposed metal part having a
   return path to the chassis (antenna, metal, cabinet,

   resistor. (This test should be performed with the
   power switch in both the On and Off positions.)
   A reading of 0.35 volt RMS or more is excessive and indicates a potential shock hazard which must be corrected
   before returning the unit to the owner.

                          INTRODUCTION
Theseservice instructions havebeenprepared to assist in the repair and adjustment of the Model
7070Stereo CompactDisc Player Cassette Tape Recorder. Design specifications and operating
characteristics maybe found in the Feature Description List on the preceding page.

UNIT      DESCRIPTION.

This modelmaybe operated from line current with the built-in 3-wire line cord. Cassette tapes
can be played back through the built-in 4 ohm2 speakers or throughany or all of the five
headphone jacks. Asingle knobcontrols the playbackvolumelevel. Theunits are designed to
shut-off automatically at the end of a tape. This unit incorPorate all of the features mentioned
aboveplus 2Xtape counter. The tape counter operates in either direction for ease of indexing
and resets with the push of a button.
MAINTENANCE             PRECAUTIONS.

Nospecial tools are required to disassembleand service these units other than those used in
                                                                that
all standard audio electronics repair shops. It is recommended a pencil-type soldering iron
be used for all soldering operations and that special care be exercised to avoid droppinghot
                           o
solder on other components r on printed circuits of the amplifier circuit board. Circuit board
repairs are not recommended except as an emergency measureand then only if qualified electronics
personnel and test equipmentare available. Usingstandard electronics shop test equipmentand
                                                                 f
techniques. check the circuit board assemblyand its componentsor continuity and for shorts and
                                                                                             a
opencircuits. Refer to the appropriate wiring diagramfor voltages and ratings of components nd
for test points. If a faulty condition is traced to the circuit board. replace the complete
assembly.
GENERAL        MAINTENANCE              PROCEDURES.

All units returned for repair and adjustmentshould undergothe following general maintenance
inspections and procedures.

(1) Inspect the drive belt for cuts or abnormal wear and replace if damaged.
(2) Demagnetize the heads. Open the cassette lid and depress the "Play" button to fully expose the
    head(s). Hold the tip of the demagnetizer within approximately 1/8" of the face of each head
    and movethe tip up and downa few times. Withdrawthe demagnetizer to a distance of at least
    two feet before unplugging it.
(3) Clean the head(s) and tape path components. Open the cassette lid and press the "Play" button
    for access to the head(s). pinch roller and capstan. The complete mechanismmust be removed
    for access to the other components. Use a cotton swab liberally moistened with commercial head
    cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to wipe the polished surface of the head(s).
    If particles remain, carefully scrape with a round woodentoothpick and repeat the swabbing
    procedure. The remaining componentscan be wiped with a clean. lint-free cloth dampenedwith
    isopropyl alcohol until all reddish brown residue has been removed. All parts should be dried
    with alow pressure jet of compressed air.
(4) Lubricate the unit. Lubricate only if servicing involves the removal or replacement of parts
    which ordinarily require lubrication. Whereoil is required. use only the best grade of
    instrument oil and use sparingly. In most cases. a single drop will be adequate. Sliding parts
    should be lubricated with a very light film of light grease which contains graphite.

        Removexcess lubricant with a lint-free cloth. If lubricant is accidentally applied to the
        drive belt or any of the friction drive surfaces. wipe it immediatelywith a cloth dampened
        with isopropyl alcohol.


                                  ADJUSTMENTS
    CASSETTE           TAPE       SECTION
    The equipment required to perform the following tape recorder adjustments is as follows.

       AC Vacuum Tube Voltmeter   (VTVM)
       Frequency Counter
                                      o
       Test Tape -- 10kHz(TEAC MTT-114 r ABEX TCC-153)
       Test Tape -- 3kHz (TEACMTT-lll or ABEXTCC-lll)

    TAPE HEADAZIMUTHADJUSTMENT.


    Insert the "A" side of the 10kHz  test tape (TEAC MTT-1l4or ABEX  TCC-153)into the tape unit.
    Connect dual channel VTVM with 4-ohmdummy   loads to the speaker jacks as shown in Figure A
    (disregard the frequency counter).

    Place the unit in the "Playback" modeand playback the "A" side of the 10kHztest tape.

    Adjust the "head azimuthadjustmentscrew"on the Record/Playhead (see Figure B) to obtain
    maximum reading on the VTVMand the difference of output betweenleft and right becomesless
    than 2dB.

    Repeat the test using the "B" side of the 10kHz test tape and again adjust the "head azimuth
    adjustmentscrew" to obtain maximum  reading on the VTVM.
    Place the unit in the "Fast/Forward" modeand advance the 10kHztest tape until you reach the
    central portion of the tape. Repeat the playing of both sides ("A" and "B") of the 10kHztest
    tape and continue to adjust the "head azimuth adjustment screw" until the differences in outputs
    from sides "A" and "B" are less than 2dB.

TAPE SPEED TEST.


 Insert   the 3kHz test   tape (TEACMTT-III or ABEX
                                                  TCC-III) into the tape unit.

 Connect 4-ohmdummyloads and a frequency counter to the speaker jacks as shown in Figure A
 (disregard the VTVM).

 Place the unit in the "FastlForward" modeand advance the 3kHz test tape until you reach the
 central portion of the test tape.

Place the unit in the "Playback"modeand playbackthe 3kHztest tape, the frequencycounter
should read 3kHz(:tl~). See Figure B.

 If not replace the motor, capstan belt, and check that the capstan and pinch roller are turning
 freely.

    CD SECTION
    The equipment required to perform the following CDPlayer adjustment is as follows.

    1) Connect the Oscilloscope to TP201(VPCO)and TP202(GND).
    2) Adjust TC201 so that the voltage reading is DC2.8V.

    2) Insert EIAJ CD-l test disc and place the unit in the Play mode.
    3) Adjust VRI0l so that the amplitude above and below the zero DC line becomes equal.
       (Amplitude A = Amplitude B)

         NOTE:Instead of using the DCinput of an oscilloscope,           you mayalso use a DCnull voltmeter
              for this al ignment.
