Name: Jason Walmsley
Job: County School Meals Advisor
Age: 41years
Status: married to Simone, (we call her can‟t cook won‟t cook!) 2 kids Dominic
13 (trying the patience of a saint at the moment!!) and Saskia 10
Loves: my family, tidiness, cars & my job – well most of the time!
Hates: mess; shellfish; offal; a dirty car, being late!
Hobbies/Interests: renovating our house, we moved into an old Rectory 2
years ago, it dates back to 1840 and has needed a little TLC (and a new
kitchen of course!). Walking the dog, we live close to the sea so we take her to
the beach - she loves to swim!
Previous job: I‟ve had numerous, I started my career as a school meals
trainee in 1985, ran my own kitchen at the age of 18. I have been a head chef
with BT, a client officer with ECC, an area trainer with the HCTC, a restaurant
manager and ops manager with BHS, a national ops manager with CRS
coffee shops, group manager with Sodexho at the BBC in London and a
national ops manager with Safeway responsible for developing in store
cafes/restaurants and food to go concepts before re joining ECC in 2004. (no
wonder I look so old!!)
What’s great about my job…. This is my dream job, I get to meet lots of
people who are interested in the same thing as me – great school food. No
two days are ever the same and I travel all over the county helping up to 574
schools with anything from building projects, sourcing suppliers, reviewing
business operations, developing business plans and helping schools to run
cost effective meal provision. One minute I can be in a meeting talking about
obesity and healthy eating with council members the next I‟m sitting with
children in a school having lunch!.
Being based in a school is great for me as I can get sample foods delivered to
the school, the school council can try the products and give me feedback, we
can test new equipment and I can sit with the children at lunch time to find out
what they think of our menu‟s and products – what better way to learn what
kids like to eat and what they don‟t!
I have a great team who share my drive and ambition – I am a bit of a control
freak and love to get my sleeves rolled up and muck in - although I don‟t get
the chance much these days – The last time I cooked in a school kitchen? –
Last Christmas, I cooked Christmas lunch for the pupils, staff and guests at St
Margarets Primary School in Toppesfield – in a brand new kitchen!
