WINDSURFING
QUEENSLAND
COMMITTEE MEETING 24/01/07
PRESENT:
TIM LAWRENCE
SCOT FARLEY
JUSTIN BOLAND
SEAN O’BRIEN
SIMON FYFE
RAY WILSON
BRAD ANDERSON
ITEMS DISCUSSED:
WQ’S POSSIBLE ASSOCIATION WITH THE MULTI HULL YACHT CLUB
It was decided that WQ could benefit greatly from joining with the multi hull yacht
club of manly. Ray Wilson WAS to look into this further re costs and
expectations of the multi hull club.
Result:
Ray reported that the club has been earmarked for commercial development and
would be a short term option only as their lease is set to expire within 12 months.
It was Ray’s belief that it was very unlikely that they will retain their rights due to
significant commercial pressures to develop the site.
The committee decided against pursuing the option any further.
RETAIL SHOP SPONSORSHIPS
It was decided that the windsurfing retail shops would instead of providing
sponsorship, pay a fee to be listed as a link on the WQ web site. The fee
discussed was $200.00 per shop.
Simon to draft a letter of the proposal for Tim to sign off on. Other possible
sponsors discussed were Johnny Appleseed and BIAS Chandlery at Tingalpa.
These shops may also be approached with the same offer.
WIND FEST
To be held next season around September 2007
RACING EVENTS AT REDCLIFFE
Brad Anderson has kindly offered the services of his step fathers boat and also
the services of his mother once a month for start duties. Brad’s Mum has a lot of
experience in this area and will be helping to define a set procedure for starts
and a notice of race that will be in line with the official starts used in the National
Titles.
WQ has agreed that they will pay for all fuel used at the events and is aware that
the older engine may consume substantially more fuel than more modern
engines.
The offer of the larger start boat will allow Redcliffe to be included in the race
calendar again.
AQUATIC EVENT AUTHORITIES
Aquatic event authorities will be sought for Redcliffe, Wellington Point and Manly
to coincide with the race calendar. Cover for both Wellington Point and Manly
will be sought on the same days to allow a decision to be made in the days
leading up to the event.
This will allow Wellington Point to be used when there is a South Easterly
prediction and Manly to be used when there is a North Easterly prediction as
these wind directions are more suited to the venues.
Simon will notify people of the final venue once a reliable prediction can be made
and a note will be posted on the WQ web site.
FORMULA NATIONALS IN QUEENSLAND
Sean O’Brien proposed that we look into holding next years Formula Nationals in
QLD.
Result: Sean has secured the event for QLD and has proposed Suttons Beach
in Redcliffe as the venue. He is going to be doing a lot of background work and
will be travelling to Europe in the hope of attracting some big names for the
event. Sean is looking at a field of 60 competitors and is in the process of
securing sponsors to help fund the competition.
Proposed dates are from the 22nd to the 25th of January with a lead up event to
be held in Sydney. Sean has asked that he is allowed to take control of the
event to which there was no objection. Tom Stevenson will most likely be the
race organiser due to his international experience in this area.
WQ INCORPORATION
There are still some outstanding issues to be resolved with the incorporation
paperwork. Tim Lawrence and Scot Farley to look into these issues and will get
advice on how best to proceed in the lodgement of past audits.
WAVE SAILORS AFFILIATION
Justin Boland to act as a go-between on this issue and will pass the message
onto Ian Greenleaf and Kirk Coster, both of whom have indicated an interest in
such a club. The message is that WQ is eager to affiliate with any wave sailing
association in the same way that we have interacted with the Wind Wanderers.
This will have benefits with regard to insurance and corporate structuring,
however the onus will be on motivated wave sailors to form the club and organise
the events.
SPEED EVENT AT CALOUNDRA (KA SPONSORED EVENT)
Justin Boland has organised a speed event at Golden Beach in Caloundra. The
event has been sponsored by KA sails and will be held on the 25-26th of Feb and
the 3-4th of March.
Although WQ would like to be involved in the event we have decided against this
for the following reasons:-
1.0 Non members will be permitted to enter the race and although they will be
asked to sign disclaimers we felt that if a non member injured themselves or
a member of the public there would be serious implications for the club due to
the lack of insurance of that competitor.
2.0 No aquatic authorities have been sought for the event. This means that even
if the competitor was a member their insurance may not be valid because the
event was not authorised by the Harbour Master or Qld Transport.
3.0 The event will be held in a marked boat channel and it is questionable as to
wether or not this is an appropriate location for an organised speed event.
4.0 We do not think we would be abiding by our duty of care if we were involved
in the event
OTHER BUSINESS
MEETINGS: It has been decided that there will now be regular monthly meetings
held so that issues can be addressed more regularly and tasks are being
checked off on a regular basis.
The next meeting is to be held at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on the
22nd of February at 6.00pm.
CLUB CHAMPION: The idea of a club champion was discussed. This person
would become club champion due to an accumulation of points throughout the
years racing results.
RACE SIGN ON: People on the committee are having difficulty racing due to
their commitments to sign on procedures etc and also a lot of sailers are missing
the briefings because they are tuning their kit before the races start. To
overcome these issues it was decided that everyone must be signed on one hour
before the races start.
NEW START BOAT: The start boat is too small to cope with many of the
conditions ideal for racing. It was suggested that we start to look for an
alternative and start looking for sources of financial help to achieve this end.
