Full Time 40 hours per week
Grade Consultant £71822 to £96831 Per Annum

An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated individual to work in our expanding Department of Oncology at
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. This is a replacement post due to retirement and the successful applicant will play a key
and prominent role in the provision and future development of systemic therapy services for breast and
gynaecological cancers in the Grampian region.

Grampian region has a population of 600,000 and the non-surgical oncology services see 3,000 new patients
annually. The stable population and complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic facilities affords the rare benefit
of having patients followed from diagnosis to all later stages of their illness. There is no waiting list for assessment
and treatment of patients in the Department of Oncology.

The successful candidate will join the existing site-specialised team of 2 Consultant Medical Oncologists (one a
Clinical Senior Lecturer), and 5 Consultant Clinical Oncologists. The medical staff of the department also includes
2 Speciality Training positions in Medical Oncology, 3 in Clinical Oncology and 2.5 FTE staff grade oncology
positions. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in the teaching programmes provided for both
undergraduates and specialist trainees in the department.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is a 1000 bed hospital incorporating all major specialities and sub-specialities which are
very well integrated with oncology. Modern imaging facilities incorporate Scotland’s first CT-PET scanner. With the
University of Aberdeen Medical School on the same site it is Europe’s largest healthcare campus. Plans are
developed for the building of a new cancer centre adjacent to the existing department by 2012 and the successful
applicant would have the opportunity to participate in the development of this new facility.

The department is very active in clinical research recruiting patients to national and international clinical trials
(Phase I, II and III programmes). Clinical research support is provided both through the Scottish Cancer Research
Network and through the many commercially sponsored studies in which consultants are encouraged to participate
as local principal investigator. The Institute of Medical Sciences as part of the Medical School campus provides
first class on-site research laboratory facilities. Translational Cancer Research is a major focus of the Academic
Department of Medical Oncology and an identified strategic aim of the University of Aberdeen. Opportunities exist
for active participation in and design of innovative clinical translational studies in cancer medicine. The successful
candidate may be awarded Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer Status with the University of Aberdeen.

Aberdeen city and shire are well known for their superb quality of life and enjoy
first class amenities and excellent communication services with other British cities and the continent, for example
flying time to London is one hour with more than 20 daily flights, and road and rail links to all points north and
south are excellent, with few of the congestion problems of central Scotland. Aberdeenshire includes some of the
most spectacular countryside in Europe with Royal Deeside and the Cairngorm Mountain National Park and a wide
range of outdoor pursuits within easy reach or commute of the city.

Applicants must be included on the Specialist Register for Medical Oncology or be within 6 months of CCT. In
accordance with recent Home Office guidelines, doctors who require a work permit will only be appointed to posts
which cannot be filled by UK/EEA applicants or doctors who do not require work permits.
