                      Objective
• The food safety objective of an EU candidate
  country is to ensure a high level of public health
  and consumer confidence in food.

• This is achieved through:
   – Developing and implementing an effective food safety
     control system based on strong science and EU
     legislation; and
   – Enforcing the system by an integrated official control
     service under the umbrella of a single food safety
     agency.
               EU Position
• Food chain safety policy in EU Member
  States is formulated on the basis of
  scientific evidence and the three elements
  of risk analysis:
  – risk assessment;
  – risk management; and
  – risk communication.

• Twinning project (with Germany and
  Lithuania, funded through IPA 2007) has
  been designed to assist the new food
  safety agency to:
  – implement and enforce the new EU-based
    legislation;
  – develop monitoring and surveillance systems;
    and
  – provide training and skill transfer in the form
    of mentoring and on-the-job training.
