					                     “Sift you as wheat”
How are we to understand this peculiar language about Satan desiring to “sift you like
wheat?” When we look at the Greek word for sift (siniazo) is only once. Now to sift
implies “to shake in a sieve”

We can gain more insight by looking at the Hebrew word for sift (nuwph) which is
normally translated as “wave, shake, or offer”.

Luke 22:31-32 (Figuratively, Sifting implies the trying to overthrow of one’s faith. To
destroy)
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he
may sift you as wheat:  Peter is identified as “wheat” instead of a tare ..
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted,
strengthen thy brethren.

Read Luke 22:31 in light of John 10:1-18 as we read Stan desires only to steal, kill, and
destroy.

John 10:10
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that
they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Now, lets take a look at sifting in the Old Testament ….

Isaiah 30:27-33
27 ¶ Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the
burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring
fire:
28 And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to
sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the
people, causing them to err.
29 Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness
of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the
mighty One of Israel.
30 And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the
lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a
devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.
31 For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which
smote with a rod.
32 And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay
upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it.
33 For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep
and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream
of brimstone, doth kindle it.

Amos 9:8-10 (Interesting language .. Israel is sifted but the grain doesn’t fall into the
ground. John 12:24 gives us some insight to what is in view here. This sounds like
judgement on the house of Israel.)
8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it
from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,
saith the LORD.
9 For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as
corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.
10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not
overtake nor prevent us.

Luke 3:16-18
16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one
mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the
wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

When you look at how God uses the word “wheat”, it is typically identified with a harvest,
first fruits, meat offering, threshing, gospel, and true believers.

And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the
feast of ingathering at the year's end.

reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but
gather the wheat into my barn.

The opposite of wheat (True believers) is chaff/stubble/tares (unsaved). Lets take a
look some “chaff” verses.

Israel.

Isaiah 17

strengthen thy brethren.
