Packeteer® (NASDAQ: PKTR), the global leader in WAN Application Optimization, today announced that
one of the leading civil litigation defense law firms in Tennessee, Rainey, Kizer, Reviere & Bell, is deploying
its Microsoft Windows-based iSharedâ ¢ branch office IT services appliance to synchronize critical case
files, accelerate file transfers between sites and preserve critical network bandwidth to support a newly
installed voice/data communications network.

As a rapidly growing firm, Rainey Kizer has expanded operations from its base in Jackson, Tenn., to include a
new branch office in Memphis to be closer to clients. Lead attorneys and paralegal staff must work very
closely on time-critical medical malpractice cases, and therefore Rainey Kizer needed to deploy a high-speed
file sharing and data synchronization solution to ensure that documents could be accessed and modified
simultaneously between offices.

"The managing partners of the firm are adamant that legal teams working out of the Memphis branch office
maintain identical document access in the same way as they do here in the home office in Jackson," said Koie
Smith, IT Administrator at Rainey Kizer. "While we were well aware of traditional approaches to this
challenge, none of the other solutions on the market were appropriate for our specific needs since our mix of
software wouldn't work over terminal services, and Citrix-like approaches have proven to be an administrative
nightmare to set up and maintain."

One of those key needs includes a requirement to maintain complete digital copies of the firm's document
structure. The firm has amassed over one million client matter files that consist of a combination of Word and
WordPerfect documents, high-resolution scanned images and signatures, medical records and flow charts
documenting the chronology of the case file. All of the client case matter need to be accessed from each of
Rainey Kizer's sites, which put a huge strain on the firm's WAN links, file transfer capabilities, and ability to
synchronize document access.

The iShared Solution

To solidify a high-performance and centralized data management branch office strategy, Rainey Kizer is
deploying Packeteer's iShared systems. These appliances integrate wide area file services (WAFS) and WAN
optimization technologies that accelerate application performance and provide bandwidth-enhancing
compression to help customers realize dramatic cost savings and centralized data protection through branch
office storage and server consolidation.

"From an administrative standpoint, iShared gives our users in multi-site locations the ability to work
simultaneously on multiple documents in order to collaborate and save changes on the fly," Smith said. "We
can scan an image into a client case file in our Jackson office and the addition will be instantly accessible by
remote users. This is a huge productivity factor when lawyers, expert witnesses, paralegals and clients have to
consult in real-time in disparate locations."

                                                        1
To optimize file transfer performance, the iShared system incorporates compression and caching techniques
that have proven to be highly beneficial. Despite using a 3Mbps fiber link between its main Jackson site and
its Memphis branch office, Rainey Kizer experienced painfully slow data transfer times because of network
latency and media-rich files. It is not uncommon to transfer hundreds of medical records that are over 1GB in
size. Prior to installing the iShared systems, transfer times would regularly exceed 15 minutes, often times
crashing altogether. Since deploying the iShared systems, transfers take a fraction of the time and files of all
sizes are delivered reliably. "If I blindfolded our branch office users now, they wouldn't know they're working
remotely," Smith explained. "This enables a much greater responsiveness that is particularly critical during
trials when timely access to specific content contained in the client file can make or break a case."

The iShared system's ability to compress and optimize WAN network traffic has also enabled Rainey Kizer to
upgrade its phone switch in Jackson to support voice over IP telephony in the Memphis office. The firm has
been able to maintain its 3Mbps fiber link without having to upgrade to a more expensive 6Mbps or 10Mbps
fiber link, resulting in a rapid return on investment for the iShared systems just in network upgrade avoidance
savings alone. "Given the exceptional compression of the iShared system, we probably could have even gotten
away with using a 1.5Mbps fiber link," says Smith. "But with the ability to run a converged voice (VOIP) and
data network with headroom to spare, we can now seriously consider videoconferencing for remote
depositions as well."
