“Do this in memory of me”
The heart of the Mass is the Eucharistic Prayer and its central point is the Consecration. The words of conse-
cration in the Roman Rite preserve St. Peter’s memory of the Last Supper. More importantly, the words them-
selves are consecratory, meaning, the bread and wine are transformed into the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity
of Jesus Christ.
Current translation of the consecratory formula Revised translation of the consecratory formula
of the bread (1973): of the bread (2011):
Take this all of you and eat it. Take this all of you, and eat of it.
This is my body, For this is my body,
which will be given up for you. which will be given up for you.

Current translation of the consecratory formula Revised translation of the consecratory formula
of the wine: of the wine:
Take this all of you and drink it. Take this, all of you, and drink from it,
This is the cup of my blood, for this is the chalice of my blood,
the blood of the new and everlasting covenant, the blood of the new and eternal covenant,
which will be shed for you which will be poured out for you
and for all, and for many
so that sins may be forgiven. for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this in memory of me. Do this in memory of me.

Granted, the two translations are very similar. However, the current translations of our Eucharistic Prayers
have been a source of some scholarly controversy since their presentation in 1973. The principle changes can
be found in the consecration of the wine. “Cup” is replaced with “chalice” and the blood that is “shed” is re-
placed with blood that is “poured.” However, the controversy I referred to is found in “et pro multis”; the cur-
rent translation says “and for all” but is now replaced with “and for many.” It seems odd at first thought – did-
n’t Jesus die for all? Who are “the many?” The “many” refers to the Church. Jesus offers salvation to every-
one. He said “Go, and make disciples of all nations” “Go and baptize all nations…” However, the requirement
for salvation is belief in Jesus and faith in the teachings of the Church.
On a side note: the moment of consecration has such a powerful impact on the imagination a number of some
interesting legends and devotions have accompanied it. In the late Middle Ages, it was thought that one could
not age while one looked at the Host, others said one was protected from disasters at that moment. The eleva-
tion of the Host become so important that members of the congregation were known to shout “Heave It higher,
Sir Priest.” Middle Ages aside, at the elevations (when the priest holds the Sacred Host or the chalice for all
to see) at is a pious devotion to look up at the Body and Blood of Christ and quietly say “My Lord and my
God.” But one can make any little prayer at that time. The people in the Middle Ages were right about one
thing: at that moment we look on the veiled presence of Jesus Christ, Eternal God.

“As for Me and My House” is a parish program aimed at fostering the virtue of
chastity by building awareness of the effects of pornography in society, offer-
ing support and healing for those harmed by it, and educating Catholics on
what they can do to protect their families from its influence.
This week’s article provides some actions you can take to protect your children
                              from being exposed to pornography:
 Ensure all computers and televisions within the home are in open and visible places (and, in particular, not
in children’s rooms).
 Regularly check all computers — monitor their website histories to see where they’ve been. If the history
has been erased, ask why it has been erased.
Place internet filters and/or accountability software on all home computers to block pornography from enter-
ing your home.
